ALI JAI (J. Taylor) and UTAH JAZZ raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the performance of RUSTY TRAWLER, K. Pope stated that from the wide alley he elected to take hold at the start and take up a rearward position. He stated during the event he followed the favourite KING ECHELON and elected to shift out approaching the 400m, and at that point RUSTY TRAWLER became awkward and shifted out further than anticipated. He felt given that he was forced to improve wide rounding the home turn, he was pleased with how the gelding finished the race off. A post-race veterinary examination of RUSTY TRAWLER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on ALI JAI, J. Taylor stated he was instructed to go forward on the horse and position behind the leaders, however found himself 3 wide and the horse was inclined to pull hard and refused to settle. He added that at the 700m he elected to stride forward and attempt to obtain a position closer to the fence, however was unable to cross the horses to his inside and as a result remained in a 3 wide position.

Race 5: Chaps Menswear Class 2 H'cap - 1600m
1st – Command To Smile 2nd – Apple Crumble 3rd – Banana Split 4th – My Flight

MY FLIGHT (A. Pattillo), THE LORDING DRAGON (J. Byrne) and COMMAND TO SMILE (J. Taylor) were all slow to begin.

Leaving the 100m, MY FLIGHT (A. Pattillo) was disappointed for a run between REAL GRAND (M. Heagney) and BANANA SPLIT (J. Kropp), which shifted out under pressure. As a result, A. Pattillo was forced to stop riding MY FLIGHT and shift to the inside to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered THE LORDING DRAGON (J. Byrne).

Stewards questioned apprentice J. Kropp, rider of BANANA SPLIT, regarding the tactics adopted on that gelding. Apprentice Kropp stated he had been instructed to obtain cover on the horse just behind the lead, however found himself in a 3 wide position without cover. He added that he then elected to allow the horse to stride forward from the 800m to assume a one off position outside the leader. Stewards advised apprentice Kropp that, in their opinion, he had made an error in judgment in that rather than fight BANANA SPLIT in a 3 wide position during the early stages he should have allowed the horse to stride forward earlier than he did to obtain a position 1 off the fence in the lead.

Stewards questioned jockey A. Spinks, rider of TOY RULER, regarding the riding tactics adopted on that gelding. A. Spinks stated that from the barrier it had been the connections’ intention to take hold and endeavour to obtain cover. He added that it had not been his intention to be positioned so far back in the field, however when it was apparent he would be positioned 3 wide outside POWDER HALL, he elected to take hold further and assumed a one-off position behind that runner. He further added that in relation to the performance, it was his recommendation to the trainer to restrict the gelding’s future performances to shorter distances as he felt the horse failed to run out a strong 1600m. Trainer L. Manzelmann reported that it was her intention to give TOY RULER a short spell and freshen the horse with a view to starting the it over shorter distances. The comments were noted.

Race 7: SPC Cleaning Services Class 1 H'cap 1200m

KING OF THE KONGO (J. Wood) was slow to begin.

CHAIRMANSHIP (A. Pattillo) and TRACY’S CHOICE (D. Browne) were both hampered at the start by UNIVERSAL BRAVE (A. Spinks), which shifted out.

TRACY’S CHOICE (D. Browne) was held up and lost ground behind the tiring SIR EMLAND (C. McIver) between the 600m and 400m. TRACY’S CHOICE then had difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 300m.

Near the 400m, INCANDESCENT (J. Byrne) was buffeted between CHECK THE CHIPS (J. Taylor), which shifted in, and SIR EMLAND (C. McIver), which was taken out by DUKE OF DANES (S. Katsidis), which shifted out to obtain clear running.

Near the 300m, MONSHEREE (M. Hellyer) had to be steadied and shift in to avoid the heels of the tiring SIR EMLAND (C. McIver), which shifted in under pressure. MONSHEREE then had difficulty obtaining clear running near the 100m.

INCANDESCENT (J. Byrne) and CHECK THE CHIPS (J. Taylor) both raced wide throughout.

Stewards questioned apprentice M. Hellyer regarding the tactics adopted on MONSHEREE. Whilst mindful of advice from trainer S. O’Dea that the horse would be ridden back in the field, stewards raised concerns with M. Hellyer regarding the tactics from the 700m until the 400m. M. Hellyer stated that after being in a position one off the fence outside KING OF THE KONGO and following UNIVERSAL BRAVE near the 800m, he elected not to go forward in a 3 wide position outside UNIVERSAL BRAVE and when KING OF THE KONGO improved forward near the 600m, he elected to follow that horse. He then stated that leaving the 600m he did not place pressure on MONSHEREE as trainer S. O’Dea had instructed him that in his opinion the horse has a short sprint and would not sustain a long run. He added that he placed pressure on MONSHEREE approaching the 400m however he had difficulty obtaining clear running at stages in the straight.

When questioned regarding the performance of TRACY’S CHOICE, jockey D. Browne stated that after obtaining a position midfield behind SIR EMLAND, he was unable to improve from the 600m until the 400m when INCANDESCENT improved forward of him to the outside. He stated he then elected to shift around the heels of INCANDESCENT and that after obtaining clear running near the 300m, the horse had a tendency to lay in, and he therefore elected to pull the whip through to his right hand and the horse found the line fairly. Trainer M. Lakey stated that the horse had worked well in the week leading into today’s event and was not disappointed with the performance or the ride of jockey D. Browne. Stewards noted the comments.
