Race 1: Tony Long Maiden Plate - 1600m
1st – Foxysal 2nd –Clear Drop 3rd – Miss Ichi 4th – Majestic Jewel

The connections of MAJESTIC JEWEL advised stewards of their intention to ride the horse in a more forward position in today’s event. Apprentice jockey A. Chau attempted to fulfil these instructions, however after being slow to begin, he was unable to do so.

MAJESTIC JEWEL (A. Chau) and FOXYSAL (D. Browne) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 800m, NATEELA (C. Reith) improved onto the heels of CAVALLO D’ORO (K. Sawyers) and shifted out, making contact with MISS ICHI (N. Evans).

FOXYSAL (D. Browne) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Near the 300m, MAJESTIC JEWELL was inconvenienced when racing to the inside of MR CASHEWS (A. Spinks), which shifted in under pressure.

MAJESTIC JEWEL, OUR GIRL GIGGLES (K. Wharton) and MR CASHEWS (A. Spinks) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer R. McCall and apprentice O. Turpin as to the reasons for CLEAR DROP leading in today’s event, which was in contrast to previous starts. Trainer R. McCall stated that he had instructed apprentice Turpin to position CLEAR DROP midfield with cover if possible. Apprentice Turpin advised he had attempted to position CLEAR DROP midfield in the early stages, however when it was apparent he would be caught 3 wide, he elected to allow the gelding to stride forward. He further added that he was able to obtain the lead at a point near the 1200m without placing pressure on CLEAR DROP to do so.

A post-race veterinary examination of STORM’S BELLE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 2: Tom Blacklaw Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Barmazal 2nd – Slender Option 3rd – Roger 4th – Zaharian Doll

Subsequent to the event all monies invested on FEMME D’ARGENT were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. CRAIGLEA GAL lost its near hind plate in running.

A short distance later, both horses were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of PERSIAN STORY (C. Priest), which was taken in by LOVE THAT CHICK (R. Faehr). R. Faehr, rider of LOVE THAT CHICK, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Passing the 800m, MAYJAR BEN (J. Wood) was forced to steady when racing to the inside of GOLD DOWN UNDER (K. Pope), which shifted in and away from LOVE THAT CHICK,which shifted in. R. Faehr, rider of LOVE THAT CHICK, was again advised to exercise more care.

PERSIAN STORY, GAL FAWKES and JUSTONETWOMANY (A. Smith) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards sought an explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of RAMSAY. K. Sawyers stated that, in his opinion, the horse failed to handle the rain affected conditions, in that the horse did not travel strongly at any stage during the event, and when placed under pressure at the 600m, it failed to run on as anticipated. Trainer S. McKinnon confirmed his disappointment in the performance and undertook to advise stewards of any abnormality that may become apparent which may have had a bearing on the performance of RAMSAY.

Race 7: Past Chairman/Life Members Class 4 H'cap – 1600m
1st – Hangover Henry 2nd – Telestah La Vistah 3rd – Patmoss 4th – Oh So Rosy

DISPURSER (B. Swanton) and OH SO ROSY (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 1200m, OH SO ROSY (M. Hellyer) improved onto the heels of BLISTERING MISS (J. Taylor) and had to be steadied.

Near the 1000m, MANSTON (M. Dorrington) improved on to the heels of BURNETT DANCER (K. Wharton) and had to be steadied and as a result shifted out, making heavy contact with BLISTERING MISS (J. Taylor), forcing that runner to raced wide from that point onwards.

Near the 500m, when endeavouring to improve between MANSTON and HANGOVER HENRY (C. Reith), OH SO ROSY was disappointed for that run when HANGOVER HENRY shifted in slightly.

Shortly after straightening HANGOVER HENRY shifted in hampering both BLISTERING MISS and BURNETT DANCER.

Near the 300m, TELESTAH LA VISTAH was hampered when HANGOVER HENRY shifted in under pressure.

Stewards questioned apprentice M. Hellyer and trainer J. Collins regarding the tactics adopted on OH SO ROSY, particularly during the early stages as to why apprentice Hellyer failed to take up a position on the fence behind MANSTON (M. Dorrington) , and between the 800m and 400m where it appeared an opportunity was available for apprentice Hellyer to improve behind BLISTERING MISS (J. Taylor) when leaving the 700m. Apprentice Hellyer explained that he had been instructed to improve into the race before the home turn and he therefore did not wish to be on the fence inside other runners. He further stated that the pattern of racing throughout the day was also a factor in his reasoning for not wishing to be placed on the fence. Apprentice Hellyer added that an opportunity to improve behind BLISTERING MISS was only open to him for a brief time when leaving the 700m and when he elected to take up that position, HANGOVER HENRY (C. Reith) had improved quickly to his outside and as a result he was unable to go forward at that point. He further stated that after being hampered near the 500m, the mare did make ground quickly when pressured. Stewards accepted apprentice Hellyer’s explanation for his tactics in the early stages, however advised him that they were of the opinion that he had erred in failing to avail himself of the run behind BLISTERING MISS earlier than the had attempted to. After taking into account all the circumstances, stewards felt that apprentice Hellyer’s ride did not fall below the standard which would warrant action being taken.

K. Pope, rider of TELESTAH LA VISTAH, was fined $200 for returning to scale overweight.

Race 8: Neil Mansell Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Hawk Hunter 2nd – Daneodin 3rd – Go Cam 4th – Giza

The start of this race was delayed for another venue to complete a race.

HOTTEST (D. Barron) was tightened for room at the start between GIZA (K. Pope) and GO CAM (K. Wharton), which shifted in.

Shortly after the start, SILVER SCHOLAR (R. Goltz) had to be steadied from the heels of FALPLAY (D. Browne), which shifted in.

The connections of SILVER SCHOLAR, which commenced to hang out from the 700m onwards, were advised that the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Near the 600m, GO CAM had to be steadied from the heels of FALPLAY, which shifted in.

GO CAM had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight until leaving the 300m.

A post-race veterinary examination of LA FRISC , which pulled up quickly after the winning post, revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer J. Wilson was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to its next race start.
