Shortly after the start, AFRICAN MAMA (J. Taylor) had to be steadied off the heels of SECRET SAFARI, which shifted out.
STALWART REIGN (L. Degara) raced wide in the early stages.
DRIVING REIGN (K. Pope) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.
Passing the 600m, TIT TAT TOOEE (J. Byrne), which was racing greenly, improved up on to the heels of STALWART REIGN and shifted out wider on the track. TIT TAT TOOEE then raced wide from that point onwards.
Near the 550m, HEAVENS OWN (D. Browne) shifted out to improve, taking DRIVING REIGN wider on the track.
Rounding the home turn, DRIVING REIGN had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring STALWART REIGN and shifted wider on the track.
Over the concluding stages, DRIVING REIGN shifted in under pressure, resulting in CRAIGELLACHIE (M. Palmer) being hampered.
RIVER LAD (A. Spinks) and LA BELLA LUNA raced wide throughout.

Race 3: Biggift.com.au Class 6 Plate - 1600m

OH SO ROSY (S. Guymer) and MORINGA’S KING (P. Hammersley) were tightened for room on jumping away between RISEUPSINGING (M. Radecker) and JAZZ HEART (J. Byrne).
Approaching the 1500m, OH SO ROSY (S Guymer) had to be steadied off the heels of RISEUPSINGING (M Radecker) when that horse shifted in slightly.
S. Guymer, rider of OH SO ROSY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 550m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of MORINGA’S KING (P. Hammersley), which resulted in MORINGA’S KING being checked. S. Guymer was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 14 February and to expire at midnight, 26 February.
Stewards questioned apprentice J. Letherby, rider of GRAND COMMANDER, regarding his riding, particularly in the early and middle stages whereby he applied significant pressure to PRINCE TELESTO (T. Huxham) after that horse had crossed to the lead. Apprentice Letherby stated that his instructions were to lead if possible or endeavour to take a position behind the leader if pressured. Apprentice Letherby further stated that once PRINCE TELESTO raced up to his outside, his intentions were to take hold and allow that horse to cross to the lead, however after leaving the 1100m, his mount had improved onto the heels of PRINCE TELESTO. Apprentice Letherby added that rather than risk his mount over racing, he elected to shift to the outside of the heels of PRINCE TELESTO, however GRAND COMMANDER travelled strongly and rather than fight his mount he allowed it to stride. Trainer W. Baker confirmed the instructions adding that in his opinion apprentice Letherby should have shown greater initiative to assess the situation, and that the pressure applied in the early stages no doubt had a bearing on GRAND COMMANDER not finishing the race off as expected. After taking into consideration all the evidence, including the patrol films, stewards elected not to issue charges against apprentice Letherby, however stewards intend to refer apprentice Letherby to the Riding Skills Panel for mentoring and such remedial or technique training as they see fit. AR92A(2)
Stewards questioned apprentice T. Huxham regarding the riding tactics adopted on PRINCE TELESTO, in particular his efforts to lead. T. Huxham stated that his instructions from the connections were to use all endeavours to lead. Stewards acknowledged that PRINCE TELESTO’s normal pattern of racing is to lead, and whilst acknowledging this pattern of racing, stewards today were concerned that apprentice Huxham should have realised that he had to work excessively hard to lead today when GRAND COMMANDER appeared intent on leading. Trainer R. Bradshaw confirmed the instructions however agreed that in the circumstances apprentice Huxham may have applied more pressure to lead than had been anticipated. Stewards advised T. Huxham that he should ensure he takes all measures necessary to ensure that horses are competitive whilst endeavouring to obey instructions. Trainer R. Bradshaw was advised that he should allow for some flexibility when issuing instructions in particular where circumstances may alter.

As a result of him allowing his mount to shift out, TAKE A STAND (M. Radecker) was hampered, and COEN (K. James), which was racing to that horse’s outside, was also inconvenienced and forced wider.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WIPEOUT, J. J. Byrne added that connections had informed him the horse had been working well in preparation for today’s race, and being mindful that the horse had not started for a month and rising in class today, he was of the opinion these factors may have contributed to the performance. As trainer L. Birchley’s representative had left the course, connections will be interviewed to ascertain how the horse pulled up on the days following the race.
