Supplementary Report
DEAGON OFFICE – MONDAY, 30 MAY 2010
Stewards today continued the inquiry opened into the riding tactics adopted by jockey C. Grylls on PRIX DU SANG in Race 9 at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on May 28 in particular the decision to race the horse in a three wide position from the 1800m.
Further evidence was taken from C. Grylls and Mr. M. Moroney the trainer of the mare.
Jockey Grylls stated that the mare was extremely agitated prior to the race and overraced at the heels of MORE ON THE TOE at the 1800m resulting in him having to ease Prix Du Sang to a three wide position.
When questioned regarding his decision not to progress forward from this point Jockey Grylls explained that initially he felt there may have been an opportunity to move MORE ON THE TOE to the fence which would have allowed him to regain a position in the one wide line. However as this did not eventuate he remained caught three wide.
In response to questions regarding him not making a forward move when BEAU SAM moved up on his outside from the 1400m Jockey Grylls stated he was content to allow BEAU SAM to progress forward with the intention of taking a trail behind that horse but was left without cover when BEAU SAM was able to take up a position outside the leader.
M. Moroney advised that the instructions were to try and have the horse in a handy position but not to lead or race outside the leader and was surprised with the pre-race behaviour of the mare as she had not shown such a tendency in previous starts.
After considering all the evidence including the most recent New Zealand starts of PRIX DU SANG Stewards, whilst of the opinion C. Grylls may have erred in his ride, could not be satisfied to the required standard that the ride was in contravention of the rules relating to taking all reasonable and permissible measures throughout running.

Jockey T. Huxham, rider of SLEPNER, was fined $100 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 200m. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account T. Huxham’s honesty in the matter and his guilty plea.
