MORINGA’S MCCOY (K. Sawyers), KUDA ROCK (K. Wharton), STORM’S BELLE (K. Gates) and WIND ZIPPER (T. Huxham) raced 3 wide for the majority of the event.

D. Brown, rider of KING ECHELON, which performed below expectations, advised stewards that the horse received minor contact from another runner in the early stages, but from that point onwards enjoyed a nice trail behind the eventual winner, CARE BEAR. He added however that the gelding was under pressure from leaving the 700m and proved very disappointing over the concluding stages.

Race 2: Nambour Relay 10th Anniversary Maiden H'cap - 1000m

Trainer B. Guy was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for IMPACTOR by the prescribed time.

TRIBULATION (K. Gates) began awkwardly and lost ground.

OUR DAISY LANE (P. Hammersley) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from S. Katsidis regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages, which resulted in SILVERZEN settling in a position midfield. S. Katsidis stated that he was instructed to ride the horse with cover and was conscious of not being too aggressive in the early stages as the horse was having its first start in blinkers and he did not want to risk having SILVERZEN overrace. He further added that SILVERZEN was under pressure to hold its position and felt that the filly would appreciate a step up in distance to 1200m or 1400m. The explanation was noted.

Trainer B. Guy was asked to explain the seemingly improved performance of IMPACTOR today in winning as compared to its most recent start at the Gold Coast when 7th of 12 on 19 June. Mr Guy stated that on that occasion the colt was forced to travel 3 wide outside the speed and he felt that in the circumstances this performance had considerable merit. He added that after discussions with apprentice M. Wood subsequent to its last start, he brought IMPACTOR back in distance to 1000m, which he felt was a factor in its improved performance today.

M. Speers, rider of SPECIAL AURA, which compounded noticeably over the concluding stages, reported that, in his opinion, the filly, which was up in class today and first up from a spell, failed to handle the slightly rain-affected track, and was of the opinion that the filly’s inability to lead today had a significant bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SPECIAL AURA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 5: John Love Electrical Class 1 H'cap – 1600m
1st – Ninth Duke 2nd – Connemara Lad 3rd – bidthemobgooday 4th – Pick Of Destiny

S. Katsidis, rider of FLEXIBILITY, reported that the slow tempo of the race in the middle stages did not suit the mare, adding that he was obliged to remain towards the inside section of the track when making a run in the home straight, which he believed to be an inferior section of the track today.

Race 6: Cancer Council Queensland Class 3 H'cap – 1400m

Trainer T. Hall was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for BUBBLED by the prescribed time.

B. Looker, rider of GLAIZEM, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out near the 300m, resulting in INCENDIO (J. Byrne) having to be steadied to avoid the heels of GLAIZEM.

Near the 100m, SHADOW BUSTER (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied when tightened for room between FAMOUS CRY (N. Thomas), which shifted in slightly under pressure, and MULGA BOB (M. Palmer), which was taken out by BUBBLED (P. Hammersley) when that horse shifted out when tiring. In the circumstances, stewards took no direct action other than to remind both P. Hammersley, rider of BUBBLED, and N. Thomas, rider of FAMOUS CRY, of their obligations to stop riding and straighten their mounts if they shift ground.

INCENDIO, DAWNS QUEEN, PUMPLECHOOK (J. Holder) raced wide throughout.

Jockey R. Wiggins reported that he was obliged to restrain MONSHEREE to a rearward position in the early stages after he was trapped extremely wide from its wide barrier.

Stewards sought an explanation from B. Looker regarding the first-up performance of GLAIZEM today. B. Looker stated that the horse travelled satisfactorily until a point near the 700m, at which time it was immediately under pressure and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. He further added that horse’s respiratory rate on return to scale was unusually elevated, in his opinion, which suggested to him that GLAIZEM may take benefit from the today’s race. Stewards intend to interview trainer R. Patterson regarding the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of GLAIZEM failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of SHADOW BUSTER revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the near side hind heel.
