Race 2: Taylaw Solicitors Class 1 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Taffy 2nd – Sophies Special 3rd – Miss Sanctity 4th – Intadom
The connections of INTADOM advised stewards that from the favourable barrier it would be ridden in a forward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Shortly after the start, CONNEMARA LAD (O. Turpin) and BALLET BIRD (S. Arnold) were both tightened for room between RAPID FLOW (C. Whiteley) and LADY PEMM (D. McWhinney), which shifted in and away from PRESIDENT (M. Wood), which in turn shifted in.
Near the 1200m, TAFFY (T. Huxham) attempted to jump a shadow on the track.
M. Radecker reported that SOPHIES SPECIAL hung out rounding the home turn.
TAFFY was held up on entering the straight until approaching the 300m where it was shifted to the outside of PRESIDENT (M. Wood) in order to improve.
T. Huxham, rider of TAFFY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of PRESIDENT (M. Wood), resulting in that gelding having to be checked and lose its position. T. Huxham was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 6 February and to expire at midnight, 16 February. In assessing penalty stewards took into account there was a minor shift from INTADOM (J. Wood), which also contributed to the incident. J. Wood, rider of INTADOM, was issued with a reprimand.
Race 3: The Schultz Toomey O’Brien Student Athlete Awards Class 2 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Azzurra Bay 2nd – The Cranberries 3rd – A Pair Of Diamonds 4th – Big Gerry
A short delay was caused to the start due to VIPERA GOLD having to be resaddled behind the barriers.
SURF’S UP (P. Hammersley) began awkwardly.
A PAIR OF DIAMONDS (K. Pope) began awkwardly and a short distance later was checked when racing between BIG GERRY (C. Kearney) and THE CRANBERRIES (P. Schmidt), both of which shifted ground.
Stewards opened an inquiry into an incident which occurred near the 1000m where NASSAVETTE (N. Thomas) lost its position. After taking evidence from N. Thomas, rider of NASSAVETTE, and apprentice P. Schmidt, rider of THE CRANBERRIES, which was racing to the outside of NASSAVETTE, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed to allow apprentice Schmidt’s master to be present.
Leaving the 600m, I’LL HAVE HIM (C. Whiteley) shifted in of its own accord and bumped the running rail and became unbalanced.
Near the 400m, SURF’S UP (P. Hammersley) shifted out in order to improve, resulting in CHANFAL (D. Browne) having to alter course and shift wider on the track.
GUNS (S. Arnold) and VIPERA GOLD (A. Spinks) raced wide throughout.
Race 4: Aitken Legal CG&E H'cap - 1400m

Near the 600m, PLAY A TUNE KENNY (M. Wood) was tightened for room to the inside of IN HIS IMAGE (D. McWhinney), which shifted in and away from ADINI, which shifted in slightly despite the efforts of its rider. At a subsequent inquiry, all apprentices were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
E. Wilkinson, rider of KALINGA ECHO, was found guilty of a charge under AR137(a), in that he allowed his mount to shift out near the 450m, tightening the running of SNAPPY KING (J. Wood) onto the heels of LINGFIELD ROAD (B. Hull), which resulted in SNAPPY KING having to be checked and lose its position. E. Wilkinson was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 6 February and to expire at midnight, 17 February.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SEMPER AUGUSTUS, S. Galloway stated that the gelding travelled well in running, however when placed under pressure from the 600m, failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. He added that SEMPER AUGUSTUS may be looking for further distance in its races, and that being first up from a spell tonight may derive benefit from the outing. A post-race veterinary examination of SEMPER AUGUSTUS revealed the gelding to have a poor post-recovery rate.
Race 5: Savvy Business Sales F&M Maiden H'cap 1400m
1st – Friendly Music 2nd – Gandy Man 3rd – I Excel 4th – Tycoon Stella
DIAMOND MISTRESS (J. Letherby) began awkwardly and lost considerable ground.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on TYCOON STELLA, in particular the fast early tempo set when leading the field by a considerable distance, apprentice O. Turpin advised that his riding instructions were to lead as per its usual racing pattern and was also advised not to restrain the mare if it commenced to overrace due to its racing characteristics, in that it resents being restrained. He added after beginning well he was able to lead however TYCOON STELLA began to race fiercely, and bearing in mind his instructions he allowed the mare to stride forward. Trainer R. Wilson confirmed the instructions issued and in light of the racing manners of TYCOON STELLO tonight, he was satisfied with O. Turpin’s riding of the mare. He further added he would now would look at dropping the mare back in distance with the same tactics to be adopted. The explanations were noted.

Near the 700m, NOBLE OPTION (P. Hammersley) improved up onto the heels of POWER REPORT (K. Banks), was steadied, shifted out, forcing MIST IN THE MORN wider on the track. MIST IN THE MORN was obliged to race wide from that point onwards.
A post-race veterinary examination of NOSHOWS, which weakened over the final 100m,revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post race recovery rate.
