SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Stewards today resumed an inquiry into the reason for Matthew Palmer being dislodged from TAFFY at Sunshine Coast on Sunday, 18 July 2010. After considering all evidence tendered and further evidence from jockey M. Palmer, who was unable to appear at the initial inquiry, it was established that approaching the 400m TAFFY had improved into a tight run to the inside of MARAETAI (P. Hammersley), which then put both MARAETAI and TAFFY in restricted room when racing between KALINYA (C. Gilby) and GRANITE KING (K. Gates) and in a position where MARAETAI could not relieve any pressure as a result of racing tight inside the heels of KALINYA. Shortly after, GRANITE KING, which was tiring, shifted out marginally, causing TAFFY to clip that runner’s heels and blunder, dislodging M. Palmer. After considering all submissions and viewing the patrol film, stewards deemed the incident to be caused by a combination of factors with no one rider or horse considered to be totally at fault.

Race 1: ACCESS INSULATION 4YO & UPWARDS MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – Bucks Point 2nd – Dawn Boy 3rd – Votive 4th – Maria Rosa

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer R. Faithfull’s representative for failing to declare J. Taylor as the rider of BELLA HERITAGE by the prescribed time.

The start was delayed when ARGUN (S. Drake) became fractious in the barriers. After undergoing a veterinary examination, ARGUN was cleared to start. Following the event a further veterinary examination of ARGUN found the horse to have suffered a slight injury to its nose.

MARIA ROSA (D. Browne) shifted in at the start, making contact with SAINT FAUSTINA (M. Hellyer).

DAWN BOY (O. Turpin) began awkwardly.

Race 2: STANLEY RIVER THOROUGHBREDS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Baa Baa Jet 2nd – I’m Busy 3rd – Finagle 4th – Gold Budda

Trainer R. Heathcote advised stewards that following LUCASAM’s last start disappointing performance at Ipswich on 11 February, he has had tests carried out on the gelding but they were unable to identify any specific reason for the poor performance. He added that the horse has worked well since and he is hopeful of the horse being positioned handy today and he expects a more forward showing.

BAA BAA JET (Michael Palmer) began awkwardly.

FINAGLE (E. Wilkinson) and I’M BUSY (C. Munce) bumped at the start when both horses shifted ground.

HANGAR SEVEN (D. Browne) raced wide throughout the event.

I’M BUSY and FLASH THE ROCK (B. Stewart) came together and bumped on a couple of occasions between the 650m and the 550m.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of HANGAR SEVEN, D. Browne stated that although the horse was caught wide for the majority of the event, he was disappointed with the horse’s finishing effort. Trainer L. Birchley also was disappointed with the gelding’s performance and advised stewards it would be his intention to have a thorough veterinary examination carried out on the gelding in the immediate future. Stewards will contact the trainer regarding the results of those tests at a later date.

B. Stewart, the rider of FLASH THE ROCK, was reprimanded under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of LUCASAM, B. El-Issa could offer no tangible explanation. Trainer R. Heathcote advised stewards that the horse had pleased him in trackwork leading up to today’s event and was at a loss to explain the poor performance. Mr Heathcote advised that he would monitor the horse’s progress and review its current racing preparation. A post-race veterinary examination of LUCASAM revealed no abnormalities.
