Race 1: IRM ELECTRICAL SERVICE MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – Expressway 2nd – Dawn Return 3rd – Ima Gem 4th – Dane Giggle

NUGGETS NOT ROCKS, which was kicked by another runners at the barriers, was declared a late scratching at 12.07 p.m. by stewards acting on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on NUGGETS NOT ROCKS be refunded, with deductions of 7 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply.

BOM CHICKA WAH WAH (C. Munce), IDLE MINDS (T. Huxham) and IMA GEM (J. Kropp) were all slow to begin.

Near the 700m MOON LADY (P. Hammersley) and DAWN RETURN (C. Priest) were both forced to race in restricted room to the inside of DANE GIGGLE (Matthew Palmer), which shifted in.

BOM CHICKA WAH WAH raced wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards questioned C. Munce regarding the below market expectation performance of BOM CHICKA WAH WAH. Jockey Munce stated that in his opinion the horse was not comfortable in the rain-affected conditions and could offer no explanation for the performance.

As light rain had fallen prior to and during the running of Race 1, stewards downgraded the track to SLOW 7 following the running of this event, retrospective to Race 1.

Race 2: STRIPE PRO SIGNS MAIDEN H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Tingles My Toes 2nd – Liberty’s Magic 3rd – Roselon 4th – Alandy Lad

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer D. Hansen for the late declaration of M. Hellyer as the rider of POP’S CHOICE.

The start was delayed when TINGLES MY TOES (D. Griffin) had to be resaddled.

The start was further delayed as a result of FAITH NO MORE (M. Wood) being caught on the side partition upon entering the barriers. FAITH NO MORE underwent a veterinary examination and was passed to take its place in the field.

SPANISH FIESTA (C. Munce) delayed the start further when being difficult to load. Trainer M. Mair was advised that a warning would placed on that filly.

DAWN BOY (C. Priest) and LIBERTY’S MAGIC (J. Holder) were slow to begin.

FAITH NO MORE jumped with its head in the air.

DESERT CANNY (N. Thomas) and MR NOBODY (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

Leaving the 800m BACK IN LOUISIANA (P. Schmidt) improved on to the heels of ROSELON (E. Wilkinson) when the pace slackened and had to be steadied and shift out. BACK IN LOUISIANA raced wide from this point onwards.

LIBERTY’S MAGIC made the home turn awkwardly and had to be steadied from the hind quarters of BACK IN LOUISA.

Near the 300m POP’S CHOICE (M. Hellyer) and ROSELON made contact on a number of occasions.

P. Schmidt, the rider of BACK IN LOUISIANA, reported that in her opinion the horse travelled well until the 600m and was of the view that as the horse was having its first start back from a spell and starting over 1400m on a heavy track, these factors contributed to the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of BACK IN LOUISIANA revealed no abnormalities.

D. Tanti the rider of RATTLE AND ROLL, reported that in his opinion the horse failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of RATTLE AND ROLL revealed no abnormalities other than that the horse had lost its near fore plate in running.

ZAABMAN (D. Green) bled from both nostrils during the event. As this was the second occasion on which the horse had bled, trainer M. Thexton’s representative, C. Austen, was advised that the gelding will now incur a mandatory lifetime ban from racing under AR. 53A(5).

Due to continuing rain, the track was downgraded further to HEAVY 8 following the running of Race 2, retrospective to this event.

Race 3: EAST COAST SHADES QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Sweet Reward 2nd – Manzano 3rd – Monjaya Boy 4th – Diet

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer L. Rowe for the late declaration of E. Wilkinson as the rider of FALON TERROR.

The start of this race was delayed when DIET (L. Cassidy) proved difficult to load. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on that gelding.

GET BACK JOJO (K. Wharton) and INDEX PAGE (M. Wood) were both slow to begin.

Near the 900m SLIGHT GLANCE (J. Taylor) was steadied when momentarily tightened for room between CALLAN PARK (S. Galloway) and DIET, which shifted in.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH (C. Priest) and CURRAWEE LASS (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.

AMO LA NONNA (Matthew Palmer) was held up between the 600m and the 500m before being steadied from the heels of CALLAN PARK at that point.

CALLAN PARK had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.

Shortly after entering the home straight MONJAYA BOY (B. Stewart) shifted out around the heels of IN A STORM (C. Munce) in an attempt to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with DIET, causing both horses to become unbalanced. DIET and MONJAYA BOY then made contact on a number of occasions and at a point approaching the 300m DIET shifted out forcing CALLAN PARK wider on the track which in turn forced ENOUGH IS ENOUGH out across the rightful running of HUSHOVD (P. Hammersley), causing its rider to stop riding and shift out to avoid that horse’s heels.

E. Wilkinson, the rider of FALON TERROR, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that leaving the 100m he permitted his mount to shift out under pressure, taking IN A STORM outwards, resulting in RUN AWAY RUBY (R. McMahon) being tightened for room between IN A STORM and DIET and having to be checked. E. Wilkinson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 30 March, and expire at midnight on Friday, 8 April 2011.

Race 4: CURRAN GROUP OPEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Borsha’s Warrior 2nd – Irishkiwi 3rd – Beartracker 4th – Lots Of Success

FRENARDI (I. Coombes) raced wide throughout.

Stewards questioned C. Munce regarding the below market expectation performance of TIGHTROPE. Jockey Munce stated that in his opinion the horse was unable to muster early pace in the prevailing track conditions and as a result was forced to settle further back in the field than anticipated. He added that this resulted in him being forced to race wide throughout the event. Trainer J. Fitzgerald stated that as the horse was having its first start back from a long spell, he was of the opinion that the prevailing track conditions had a significant effect on the performance today. A post-race veterinary examination of TIGHTROPE revealed no abnormalities.

Apprentice M. Hellyer, the rider of 4th placegetter LOTS OF SUCCESS, was found guilty of a charge under AR. 137(b) in that he failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race which in the opinion of the stewards resulted in his mount being beaten by the margin of a nose by 3rd placegetter BEARTRACKER (K. Fuji). Apprentice Hellyer’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 2 weeks, with the term to commence at midnight on Sunday, 3 April, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 17 April 2011.

Following his ride in this event, C. Munce was stood down from his remaining engagements by the Club doctor and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 5: IAN WHISTON & ASSOCIATES CLASS 3 PLATE - 1400m
1st – Duel Show 2nd – Current Affair 3rd – Incandescent 4th – Azzurra Bay

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer L. White for the late declaration of J. Kropp as the rider of RED ROCKER.

The start of this race was delayed due to TOY RULER (B. Ohlbrecht), which lost its near fore plate en route to the barriers, having to be reshod.

CURRENT AFFAIR (D. Browne) shifted in at the start making heavy contact with INCANDESCENT (J. Holder) which lost ground as a result.

NOISY SCOOTER (P. Schmidt) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 1200m TOY RULER was steadied when momentarily tightened for room by AZZURRA BAY (M. Wood), which shifted in.

STICKSY (M. Hellyer) overraced when steadied during the early stages.

DUEL SHOW (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

TOY RULER was forced to race in restricted room and was steadied on a number of occasions from leaving the 500m until leaving the 400m between NOISY SCOOTER and AZZURRA BAY which shifted out in an attempt to improve around the tiring ALL YOURS.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Wood, the rider of AZZURRA BAY, regarding his tactics adopted between the 900m and the 500m where it appeared he had opportunity to initially improve behind ALL YOURS (N. Thomas), and then when leaving the 600m it appeared that whilst DUEL SHOW improved to his outside he had opportunity to shift out around the heels of ALL YOURS in an attempt to improve into the race rather than be held up behind ALL YOURS which had commenced to lose ground. This resulted in AZZURRA BAY being held up and unable to improve until approaching the 400m. Apprentice Wood stated that at that stage of the race it was his opinion that AZZURRA BAY was not travelling well and that he was satisfied to allow DUEL SHOW improve into the race to his outside and then follow that runner into the straight. He added that he was a victim of circumstances when ALL YOURS compounded leaving the 600m as he felt that that runner was a chance in the event and was of the opinion that it would take him into the race from that point. In the circumstances, stewards noted apprentice M. Wood’s explanation.

ALL YOURS (N. Thomas) bled from both nostrils during the event. As this was the first occasion on which ALL YOURS had bled, trainer M. Mair was advised that under the provisions of AR. 53A(4) ALL YOURS would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months and before resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over at least 1000m in the presence of a steward.

Race 6: MONTEZUMAS CALOUNDRA CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Nickiera 2nd – Karanja 3rd – Plazsni 4th – El Aqua

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer B. Guy to scratch BUTCHER at 12.33 p.m. following the downgrading of the track to HEAVY 8.

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer D. Sutton to scratch MYSTIC MINT at 1.35 p.m. following the downgrading of the track to HEAVY 8.

FIVESTAR LASS, which was extremely fractious in the barriers, was a late scratching at 3.24 p.m. on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on FIVESTAR LASS be refunded, with deductions of 19 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 20 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply. Trainer D. Murphy was advised that he must obtain 2 barrier certificates for FIVESTAR LASS prior to its next start.

Race 7: OFFICE NATIONAL CALOUNDRA CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Gold Shears 2nd – One Tree 3rd – Higher Order 4th – Hubert

RIO REX was a late scratching at 1.10 p.m. following notification from trainer A. Cowell that the horse had injured itself. Mr Cowell will be advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for RIO REX prior to its next start.

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer S. O’dea to scratch MAJESTIC JEWEL at 2.10 p.m. following the downgrading of the track to HEAVY 8.

Connections advised that HUBERT (M. Wood) would be ridden at the rear of the field today. HUBERT raced in a mid-field position despite being restrained during the early stages.

HIGHER ORDER (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1000m, as a result of the pace slackening, ONE TREE (S. Scriven) improved on to the heels of HUBERT (M. Wood) and had to be steadied and shifted out. As a result, THREATENED DANGER (J. Byrne), which was following, also had to be steadied to avoid heels and shifted wider on the track.

Shortly after entering the straight, HUBERT attempted to shift out to obtain clear running and as a result made contact with ONE TREE, causing both horses to become unbalanced.

Stewards questioned J. Byrne regarding the performance of THREATENED DANGER. Jockey Byrne stated that in his opinion the horse failed to handle the rain-affected conditions. Trainer J. Thompson agreed with jockey Byrne’s assessment and gave an undertaking to advise stewards should anything come to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.

Race 8: SECURE ACCESS IT CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Jameson Aich 2nd – Finagle 3rd – Rascal 4th – Nauticat

Trainer G. Thompson was reprimanded under AR. 140B for presenting BRADASH (P. Schmidt) with incorrect gear.

Shortly after the start RUSSIAN ROYALTY (D. Green) was steadied when momentarily tightened for room between CAVALLO D'ORO (K. Wharton) and MALLARD (J. Byrne), which shifted in and away from ENEMYATTHEGATE (P. Hammersley).

When steadied approaching the 800m PATH TO FREEDOM (S. Galloway) commenced to overrace for a short distance at the heels of NAUTICAT (S. Scriven).

MALLARD, EL CONDE (I. Coombes) and ENEMYATTHEGATE raced wide throughout.

Approaching the 400m MALLARD improved on to the heels of ENEMYATTHEGATE and had to be steadied before shifting out to obtain clear running making contact with CAVALLO D'ORO.

PATH TO FREEDOM had difficulty obtaining clear running during the early stages of the home straight.

J. Byrne reported that MALLARD failed to handle the rain-affected conditions.

Stewards questioned S. Galloway regarding the performance of PATH TO FREEDOM and the tactics he adopted on that gelding. He stated that he had been instructed to position the horse off the pace if possible and further stated that the horse ran on fairly over the concluding stages. After taking further evidence from trainer T. Hall, Mr Hall pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 135A in that he failed to notify stewards of a change in tactics in that PATH TO FREEDOM had, prior to today’s event, established a racing pattern of leading in its most recent starts. Mr Hall was fined $200.
