Race 1: CALOUNDRA CITY REALTY C,G&E MAIDEN H’CAP - 1300m
1st – Tuatara 2nd – Loupets 3rd – Flash Of Luck 4th – Rock To Rule
As A. Pattillo was indisposed, R. Hancock substituted as the rider of FIRST PIPEMAJOR.
BULGA CREEK (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1200m COTTONWOOD CREEK (T. Harrison) shifted in and had to be steadied from the heels of FIRST PIPEMAJOR (R. Hancock).
Approaching the 900m COTTONWOOD CREEK was forced wider on the track by BULGA CREEK when that runner had to be steadied from the heels of FLASH OF LUCK (J. Kropp), which also had to be steadied from the heels of ROCK TO RULE (D. McWhinney) when that horse slackened the pace significantly. Apprentice D. McWhinney was reprimanded under AR. 137(d) for unnecessarily steadying the pace, which caused this incident.
Near the 600m TUATARA (R. McMahon) shifted out to improve and in doing so forced BULGA CREEK wider on the track. A short distance later TUATARA again shifted out to improve and again forced BULGA CREEK wider on the track.
Near the 450m FLASH OF LUCK and FIRST PIPEMAJOR both had to be steadied when tightened for room between TUATARA, which had improved to their outside, and ROCK TO RULE, which shifted out to obtain clear running. Apprentice D. McWhinney (ROCK TO RULE) was reprimanded for this incident.
Leaving the 400m ROCK TO RULE became unbalanced when bumped heavily by TUATARA, which shifted in under pressure. R. McMahon (TUATARA) was reprimanded for this incident.
Near the 300m ROCK TO RULE, when shifting out to obtain clear running, made contact with the hind quarters of TUATARA, which shifted in slightly, causing ROCK TO RULE to become unbalanced and lose ground.
M. Hellyer reported that BULGA CREEK hung out from the 600m onwards.
Race 2: PROLIQUOR SOLUTIONS F&M MAIDEN H’CAP - 1300m
1st – Vertigo 2nd – Keepin’ Grace 3rd – Acquaint 4th – Minfinale
OUZO ON THE ROCKS (Matthew Palmer) jumped away awkwardly.
Leaving the 1100m KEEPIN' GRACE (M. Hellyer) raced in restricted room for a short distance to the inside of ACQUAINT (J. Hoopert), which shifted in.
Leaving the 800m SABARBAH (G. Goold) hung out across the heels of SHADY DEAL (B. Stewart) and had to be checked.
VERTIGO (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout.
Near the 500m KEEPIN' GRACE had to be steadied from the heels of SECRETS OF SUCCESS (N. Thomas) when unable to secure clear running to the outside of that gelding’s heels and to the inside of VERTIGO (R. McMahon).
SHADY DEAL was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
SHADY DEAL was held up from leaving the 300m until approaching the 200m and was then forced to check when attempting to secure clear running between OUZO ON THE ROCKS, which shifted in slightly when SHADY DEAL made contact with that horse’s hind quarters, and MONEY AND GUNS (K. Pope), which shifted out after being buffeted for some distance to the outside of ACQUAINT, which shifted out in order to secure clear running. J. Hoopert (ACQUAINT) was reprimanded for this incident.
Approaching the 100m SECRETS OF SUCCESS shifted in and hampered OUZO ON THE ROCKS after being taken in by KEEPIN' GRACE, which shifted in under pressure.
Stewards sought an explanation from B. Stewart regarding the tactics adopted on SHADY DEAL, in particular his reasons for staying on the fence and to the inside of OUZO ON THE ROCKS approaching the 400m where it appeared opportunity was open to him to shift out around the heels of that runner in order to secure clear running. Jockey Stewart stated at that point of the race he had considered shifting out around OUZO ON THE ROCKS, however was of the view that OUZO ON THE ROCKS appeared to be inclined to shift out and as a result he would have been forced wider than he would have liked. He added that after securing clear running to the inside of OUZO ON THE ROCKS, OUZO ON THE ROCKS did not shift out as anticipated and this resulted in him being held up in the straight. He added that in hindsight shifting outside OUZO ON THE ROCKS may have been a better option, however at the time was satisfied with his decision. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered.
A post-race veterinary examination of SABARBAH, which finished a distant last, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B. Thornton reported that in his opinion the horse has shown a tendency to be slightly field shy and he will now experiment with the addition of blinkers for the filly’s next start.
Race 3: GO TRANSIT MEDIA GROUP PTY LIMITED BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Satch 2nd – Maling 3rd – Xanthos 4th – Telestah La Vistah
XANTHOS (N. Seymour) and BLOODHOUND (R. Hancock) were both slow to begin.
BLOODHOUND raced wide throughout.
Leaving the 800m SATCH (T. Harrison) shifted out to improve, forcing XANTHOS wider on the track. Both horses raced wide from this point onwards.
FANTASTIC CARAT (Matthew Palmer) bled from both nostrils during the event. As this was the second occasion which the horse had bled, it will now incur a lifetime ban from racing.
Race 4: BOLACK PUBLICATIONS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Coco Dubawi 2nd – Serekh 3rd – Desert Vision 4th – Tickled
The start of this race was delayed when THE DOW JONES (N. Thomas) became fractious in the barriers, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed to take its place in the field.
DESERT VISION (A. Pattillo), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start between SEREKH (J. Byrne) and RED LEMONADE (J. Taylor), which was taken in by COCO DUBAWI (R. McMahon).
SIR PARAGON (B. Stewart) raced wide until a point approaching the 700m when that horse assumed the position outside the lead.
Leaving the 700m WARRANT (J. Kropp) shifted out to improve and raced wide from that point onwards.
RED LEMONADE laid in over the final 500m.
A post-race veterinary examination of THE DOW JONES, which tailed off, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer A. Walden reported that following today’s performance he would consider the horse’s racing future.
Race 5: QUEENSLAND ADVERTISING CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1300m
1st – Whateverwhenever 2nd – Lohan 3rd – Patapinda 4th – Royal Charger
As R. Wiggins was ill, J. Taylor was substituted as the rider of PRIMEVAL DEMAND and DON’T YOU WORRY (Race 7).
COMAHNI (D. McWhinney), which kicked the fence in the enclosure, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to start.
Shortly after the start CAULDRON (T. Harrison) was tightened for room between COMAHNI and PATAPINDA (E. Wilkinson), which shifted out.
Near the 1250m CAULDRON, COMAHNI, TWO TONE (B. Stewart) and LOHAN (J. Byrne) were all hampered when racing to the inside of WHATEVERWHENEVER (G. Colless), which shifted in.
Near the 1200m COMAHNI had to be severely checked from the heels of TWO TONE when tightened for room between CAULDRON, which after making heavy contact with the running rail shifted out, and TWO TONE, which was taken in by LOHAN, which hung in and away from WHATEVERWHENEVER despite the efforts of its rider.
CAULDRON overraced during the early stages.
Trainer N. Boyle reported that TWO TONE (B. Stewart) had been galloped on on the off hind leg.
Race 6: BUNDILLA DRY CLEANERS QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Forty Zip 2nd – Shadow Princess 3rd – Skater Dude 4th – Ten To Zero
Upon arrival at the barriers VAIN AT HEART (A. Pattillo) was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
ZED MAN (G. Killen) shifted out at the start and made contact with the hind quarters of BLACK CASH (Matthew Palmer).
VAIN AT HEART jumped away awkwardly.
BLACK CASH raced wide during the early stages before being ridden vigorously to assume a position outside the leader at a point near the 700m.
Near the 900m TEN TO ZERO (B. Stewart) shifted in and made contact with RED ROYAL (C. Munce). A short distance later TEN TO ZERO commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from the heels of SKATER DUDE (D. Griffin).
ZED MAN raced wide throughout.
RED ROYAL was inconvenienced over the concluding stages when tightened for room between SKATER DUDE and SHADOW PRINCESS (N. Thomas) which shifted out slightly under pressure.
D. Griffin reported that SKATER DUDE hung out from the 800m.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the poor performance of SOUNDS OF CRYSTAL. He stated that after overracing during the early stages the filly travelled well until approaching the home turn and then proved disappointing from that point onwards. A post-race veterinary examination of SOUNDS OF CRYSTAL (G. Colless) revealed the filly to have a poor post-race recovery, possible heat stress and making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer A. Bailey was advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness and the results of an endoscopic examination for SOUNDS OF CRYSTAL prior to its next start.
Race 7: RACE ZONE RACING SUPPLIES CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Olympia’s Flame 2nd – Slice And Dice 3rd – Mr Bulista 4th – Mieko’s Diamond
MIEKO'S DIAMOND (B. Wallace) and SLICE AND DICE (G. Colless) were slow to begin.
SPECKLED SHINING (G. Goold) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
SPECKLED SHINING raced wide throughout.
Race 8: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL SERVICES CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Kolo 2nd – Jabiru 3rd – Tail And All 4th – Rascal
HIGHER ORDER (C. Munce) stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground. Stewards viewed the patrol footage before declaring correct weight and deemed HIGHER ORDER to have been afforded a fair start and therefore a runner. Trainer G. Clunes was advised that he must obtain two further barrier certificates for HIGHER ORDER prior to its next start.
NOVASPUR (J. Taylor) blundered on jumping away, almost dislodging its rider.
GALAXY KING (K. Pope) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 200m TAIL AND ALL (J. Byrne) and RASCAL (J. Hoopert) were both hampered when tightened for room between KOLO (A. Pattillo) and NOVASPUR which shifted out under pressure. J. Taylor (NOVASPUR) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
