Race 1: The Journal Weekender F&M Class 1 H'cap - 1400m
1st – All The Girls Gold 2nd – On The Liffey 3rd – Samantha’s Opinion 4th – Society Lass
DOUBLE DEUCE (G. Colless) and SAMATHA’S OPINION (T. Harrison) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m, when the pace slackened, SOCIETY LASS (J. Taylor) commenced to overrace with its head in the air and shifted wider on the track, forcing ROSE OF TESSIE (D. McWhinney) wider also. SOCIETY LASS then hung out for the remainder of the event.
Leaving the 600m, MONASKI (I. Coombes) shifted out to improve around the heels of ON THE LIFFEY (A. Pattillo) and made heavy contact with SOCIETY LASS on a number of occasions, causing both horses to become unbalanced.
Approaching the 400m ALL THE GIRLS GOLD (A. Spinks) shifted out in an attempt to secure clear running and in doing so made heavy contact with ROSE OF TESSIE (D. McWhinney), causing both horses to become unbalanced. ALL THE GIRLS GOLD was then held up for a short distance after leaving the 400m.
Nearing the 200m, both SAMANTHA’S OPINION and ALL THE GIRLS GOLD attempted to secure clear running between DOUBLE DEUCE (G. Colless) and ON THE LIFFEY where there was insufficient room for both horses. This resulted in SAMANTH’S OPINION being steadied.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Colless regarding the below market expectation performance of DOUBLE DEUCE. G. Colless stated that after travelling well throughout the event, the horse failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure entering the home straight and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer D. Forster confirmed her disappointment with the performance, adding that in light of today’s performance she would recommend to connections to reconsider the horse’s current racing preparation.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of ALL THE GIRLS GOLD, trainer L. Tipper stated that the horse was having its second start from a lengthy spell and, in her opinion, had derived benefit from its first start. She also added that, in her view, ALL THE GIRLS GOLD appreciated today’s rain affected surface.
Following this race the track rating was upgraded to Dead 5.
Race 2: Crowne Plaza QTIS 3yo Maiden H'cap - 1400m
1st – Sugar Daddy 2nd – King’s Romance 3rd – Town Dazzler 4th – Top Tassel
STORMIN was declared a late scratching at 10.10 am on veterinary advice.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by the B. Looker, rider of the 2nd placegetter, SUGAR DADDY, against KING’S ROMANCE (R. Wiggins) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 100m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, viewing the patrol videos, and from the stewards observations, it was established that over the final 100m, KING’S ROMANCE shifted out under pressure, forcing SUGAR DADDY wider on the track. Stewards were satisfied that the ground lost in the incident exceeded the short-half head margin which separated both horses at the finish and therefore upheld the objection and amended the Judge’s placings to read: No.2 – Sugar Daddy – 1st No.1 – King’s Romance – 2nd No.8 – Town Dazzler – 3rd No. 10 – Top Tassel – 4th.
FOR MIA (D. Griffin) jumped away awkwardly and hampered TOWN DAZZLER (P. Hammersley).
M. Gray, rider of DUDE AL, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that shortly after the start he permitted his mount to shift in when riding along when insufficiently clear of DOREBOY (D. Whitmore) causing that runner to be checked and resulting in MISHANI IZMIR (J. Taylor) losing ground when tightened for room onto the hind quarters of TOP TASSEL. M. Gray was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 5 February and to expire at midnight 18 February.
Approaching the 500m, DUDE AL (M. Gray) shifted in, forcing DOREBOY (D. Whitmore) to be steadied. In this incident, DOREBOY shifted wider on the track, forcing TOWN DAZZLER (P. Hammersley) wider. M. Gray, rider of DUDE AL, was reprimanded.
Leaving the 200m, SUGAR DADDY (B. Looker) shifted out to secure clear running and in doing so made contact with MY MATE SULLY (M. Hellyer), forcing that horse wider on the track.
BLACK MONTY (L. Finlay) and DUDE AL (M. Gray) raced wide throughout.
Jockey M. Gray was fined $100 for leaving the course without first obtaining permission from the stewards.
Race 3: Wide World Of Lights Class 5 H'cap - 1800m
1st –Lots Of Heart 2nd – Hi Jo Silver 3rd – World By Night 4th – It’s Wunderbar
LOTS OF HEART (R. Wiggins) was slow to begin.
Stewards inquired into the tactics adopted by apprentice K. Gates, rider of KEN AND KIM, and apprentice R. Ride, rider of MR MAGORIUM, in particular the reasons for the fast tempo set in the first 1200 metres of the race, which resulted in both horses racing well in advance of the main body of the field. After taking evidence from K. Gates and R. Ride, both apprentices explained that they had been instructed to take up a leading position if possible, however Miss Ride explained that after leaving the 1400m it became apparent she would be unable to obtain the lead and as a result surrendered this position to KEN AND KIM. Miss Gates advised that after obtaining the lead, she was not aware of the pace she was setting and did not realise she was leading by such a large margin. Mr N. Owen, trainer KEN AND KIM, and Mr B. Hudson, trainer of MR MAGORIUM, both confirmed the instructions and noted that they were not dissatisfied with the tactics adopted, Mr Owen adding that KEN AND KIM had previously been successful when racing in the lead and setting fast tempos. Stewards advised both apprentices that their rides lacked judgement and initiative, and of more concern was Miss Gates’ failure to rate her mount sufficiently to enable it to finish the race off strongly. Both apprentices were referred for sessions with the Rider Review Panel.
A post-race veterinary examination of IVY’S LEAGUE revealed the horse to be lame in the off fore leg and had lost its off fore plate in running. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the horse prior to its next race start. Trainer B. Smith advised that consideration now would be given to retiring IVY’S LEAGUE.
Race 4: Timber Shades F&M Maiden H'cap – 1200m
1st – Mia Forza 2nd – Lady Racer 3rd – Zaroxie 4th – Liberty Quest
ROYAL SAVIVRE (B. Richardson) and DRAG QUEEN (K. Wharton) were slow to begin.
Leaving the 1000m, PERSIAN EYES (D. Griffin) commenced to race ungenerously whilst being restrained from heels. As a consequence, DRAG QUEEN (K. Wharton) and ZAROXIE (S. Arnold), which were following, had to be restrained to avoid heels.
Approaching the 1000m LIBERTY QUEST (E. Wilkinson) shifted in, making heavy contact with LADY RACER (T. Bell).
Leaving the 700m, DRAG QUEEN (K. Wharton) improved onto the heels of PERSIAN EYES (D. Griffin) and had to be checked.
Near the 200m, LADY RACER (T. Bell) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered WHO CARES WINS (M. Hellyer), which had to be steadied.
SHOOT FER LOVE (G. Killen) raced wide throughout.
Race 5: Suncoast Fitness CG&E Maiden H'cap – 1200m
1st – True Red 2nd – Bucket Of Cash 3rd – Platinum 4th – Farmerwantsawife
LITTLE ROY (K. Fujii) and PLATINUM SPUR (G. Colless) both jumped away awkwardly, making contact and losing ground.
Near the 300m, FLYING INDY (L. Finlay) shifted out to improve around the heels of BUCKET OF CASH (K. Gates) and in doing so made heavy contact with FARMERWANTSAWIFE (N. Thomas).
BUCKET OF CASH raced wide throughout.
LITTLE ROY lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 6: LJ. Hooker Caloundra QTIS 600 2yo Plate - 1200m
1st – Snipzu 2nd – Platinum State 3rd – Saluter 4th – Lady Colours
ARAGON (P. Wolfgram) and DANSAL (R. Mason) were both slowly into stride.
SALUTER (J. Byrne) overraced approaching the 800m and had to be steadied from the heels of SNIPZU (G. Colless) and as a result shifted wider on the track and raced wide from that point onwards.
STELLENBOSCH LOVE (J. Taylor) hung out and raced wide throughout the race. Trainer P. Duff was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse regarding its racing manners.
Jockey R. Mason was fined $300 for using her whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
Race 7: Star Shots Photography Class 3 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Chipp’n Away 2nd – Fast Lover 3rd – Queen Thyra 4th – Texas Red
DELAGO PILLI (S. Galloway) was slow to begin.
CHIPP’N AWAY (C. Munce) jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with ONE OUTED (J. Hoopert). A short distance later, ONE OUTED had to be checked when tightened for room between CHIPP’N AWAY and PRINCE LIAM (M. Wood), which had to be steadied when tightened for room by QUEEN THYRA (G. Colless), which was taken out by TEXAS RED (B. Richardson). B. Richardson, rider of TEXAS RED, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.
Near the 700m ONE OUTED had to be steadied when tightened for room by CHIPP’N AWAY (C. Munce), which shifted in.
Passing the 500m, PRINCE LIAM (M. Wood) shifted out to improve and in doing so hampered FAST LOVER (J. Byrne).
INNOCENT JACK (R. Mason) and CHORAL (T. Harrison) raced wide throughout.
BELLAVONANE bled from both nostrils during the event. Connections were advised that BELLAVONANE would be barred from racing for 3 months.
A post-race veterinary examination of INNOCENT JACK revealed the horse to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination would be required prior to its next race start.
A post-race veterinary examination of PRINCE LIAM, which compounded badly in the home straight, revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer T. Miller was advised that a veterinary clearance for PRINCE LIAM would be required prior to its next race start.
Race 8: Super Fund Services Australia CGE Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Richly Blended 2nd – Rocking Easy 3rd – Markout 4th – Red Centurion
As M. Wood was to be overweight, R. Hancock was substituted as the rider of MAGIC MOVER. M. Wood was fined $100.
ONE TO GO (P. Hammersley), which was fractious in the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
MAGIC MOVER (R. Hancock) was slow to begin.
Near the 250m. MR MOTO (D. Browne) was disappointed for a run between FAITH NO MORE (K. Fujii) and LOUPETS (J. Byrne) and subsequently was awkwardly placed at the heels of LOUPETS (J. Byrne) for a considerable distance. Shortly thereafter, LOUPETS had to be eased when tightened for room between ONE TO GO, which shifted in and away from ROCKING EASY (C. Munce), which shifted in under pressure, and RED CENTURION (S. Galloway), which was initially taken out by RICHLY BLENDED (R. McMahon). After considering all the relevant factors, stewards advised jockeys S. Galloway, rider of RED CENTURION, R. McMahon, rider of RICHLY BLENDED, and C. Munce, rider of ROCKING EASY, to exercise more care in similar circumstances when shifting ground. In assessing this incident, stewards were mindful of the racing manners of LOUPETS at this point.
MISTER QUINN (C. Priest), WARRANT (A. Kitson) and DASSAULT (T. Bell) raced wide throughout.
Race 9: Chemist Warehouse Sunshine Coast Cup – 1400m
1st – Steel Zip 2nd – Ready To Rip 3rd – Dalzar 4th – Vipera Gold
STARTSMEUP, which shifted its near fore plate in the enclosure, had to be reshod. The horse was inspected by the veterinary surgeon whilst parading behind the barriers and was subsequently cleared to take its place in the field.
Correct weight was delayed when M. Hellyer, rider of ELUSIVE PORT, made application to be declared a non runner on the grounds that his mount’s bridle was being held by a barrier attendant as the start was effected. Stewards after hearing all evidence established that whilst ELUSIVE PORT had been fractious and was receiving assistance from a barrier attendant, this did not effect the gelding’s ability to take advantage of the start and therefore declared ELUSIVE PORT a runner.
I’M RUTHLESS (J. Byrne), MAROON BELLS (G. Killen) and ELUSIVE PORT (M. Hellyer) were all tightened for room between HUSSONATOR (P. Hammersley) and AUSWORLD (N. Thomas), which shifted in.
Shortly after the start, READY TO RIP (D. Browne) and ELUSIVE PORT were tightened for room between HUSSONATOR and AUSWORLD, which shifted in. N. Thomas, rider of AUSWORLD, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
DUAL CHAMBER (E. Wilkinson) overraced during the middle stages.
DALZAR (M. Wood) shifted out to improve from the 700m and raced wide from that point onwards.
ATTALLUS (S. Galloway) and AUSWORLD (N. Thomas) raced wide throughout.
DALZAR lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 10: Best Security Pty Ltd Class 2 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Sinister Prince 2nd – Stage Exit 3rd – Laughing Crusader 4th – Bloomin Tipsy
As G. Colless was to be overweight, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of SO FELINE. G. Colless was fined the sum of $200.
STAGE EXIT (B. Looker) was slow to begin, losing considerable ground.
Near the 800m, SINISTER PRINCE (M. Wood) shifted out around the heels of SHIMMERING HEIGHTS (D. Browne) and in doing so forced DAMALO (R. Mason) wider on the track. DAMALO raced wide from that point onwards.
COLLECTOR (K. Wharton) shifted out to improve approaching the 700m and raced wide from that point onwards.
BLOOMIN TIPSY (K. Gates) raced wide throughout.
Stewards questioned T. Harrison, rider of SQUARE UP, and stable representative Mrs S. Harden, regarding the tactics adopted on that gelding, particularly between the 600m and the 100m. Of particular concern to stewards was Miss Harrison’s failure to shift wider on the track when approaching the 400m to improve into the race when an opportunity appeared for her to do so. Furthermore, that when leaving the 400m, Miss Harrison remained in a position following KOLO when it appeared she had opportunity to shift wider on the track to secure clear running, and also that after having obtained clear running from the 300m she failed to ride vigorously between that point and the 200m when tightened for room between PASSIVITY and DAMALO, which shifted in. Miss Harrison explained that prior to the 400m she had hoped to ride for luck and secure clear running between runners as she was of a mind that the racing pattern of the day had been for horses to shift away from the fence prior to straightening, which would have availed her clear running. She further added that she was still hopeful of securing clear running to the inside of KOLO between the 400m and 300m. She then explained that after leaving the 300m she was reluctant to push between runners as she was concerned that the runner immediately to her outside, that being DAMALO, had a tendency to lay in. Stewards advised Miss Harrison that they accepted her explanation for not shifting wider on the track prior to the 400m, however her riding from that point lacked judgment in that in similar circumstances she would be expected to make greater effort to afford her mounts clear running at this stage of the race, and furthermore that when clear running is afforded to her, she would be expected to ride with more vigour to afford her mounts every possible chance. In considering this matter, stewards took into account Miss Harrison’s relative inexperience as an apprentice and took no further action.
A post race veterinary examination of SQUARE UP failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
M. Wood, rider of SINISTER PRINCE, was fined $200 for making a celebratory gesture prior to the finish line.
