GENERAL
As S. Galloway was ill and S. Drake was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS 3YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – Luck From Above 2nd – Just Pink 3rd – Authoritative 4th – Admire
Subject to any further submissions from trainer J. Casey, a $100 fine will be imposed for the late notification of gear change for NATURAL REACTION.
BOLSTER, which was fractious en route to the course, was a late scratching at 10.38 a.m. for veterinary reasons.
REPETITIOUS (A. Spinks) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
EVE’S LEGEND (P. Schmidt) and LUCK FROM ABOVE (G. Colless) were both slow to begin.
Approaching the 400m AUTHORITATIVE (J. Byrne) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ADMIRE (C. Munce), which shifted in slightly after AUTHORITATIVE had been taken out by EVE’S LEGEND despite the efforts of its rider.
A post-race veterinary examination of EVE’S LEGEND, which raced greenly throughout, revealed no significant abnormalities other than that the gelding had lost its near hind plate.
A post-race veterinary examination of NATURAL REACTION revealed the mare to be in season.
Race 2: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – Frozen Crest 2nd – Dezario 3rd – Duke Of Cambridge 4th – Black Olive
MR BUMBLE (R. Mason), which made contact with the barriers during its preliminary, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon prior to the start and cleared to race.
MISS CHOISIR (J. Byrne), which was slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between FROZEN CREST (C. Munce) and COOPER TALE (A. Spinks), both of which shifted ground.
Near the 900m DEZARIO (J. Kropp) became unbalanced when forced to race in restricted room between FROZEN QUEST and DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE (C. Maund), which shifted out under pressure.
GUNDY GAL (J. Stanley), which raced greenly and hung out throughout the event, shifted out near the 600m and had to be steadied from the heels of MR BUMBLES.
BLACK OLIVE (K. Matheson), MR BUMBLE, GUNDY GAL and HENRY’S SPUR (K. Pope) all raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 300m COURT ACTION (K. Wharton) and MISS CHOISIR were both forced to race in restricted room between BLACK OLIVE and DEZARIO, which shifted out to obtain clear running. J. Kropp (DEZARIO) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 3: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – Parsnips 2nd – Anchorfel 3rd – Written Eleison 4th – Exception
P. Holmes pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 118C(b) in that when weighing out as the rider of EXCEPTION he wore a modified safety vest. P. Holmes was fined $500.
ASHA THE SMASHA (P. Schmidt) was considerably slow to begin.
WRITTEN ELEISON (G. Cooksley) was slow to begin.
ANCHORFEL (J. Taylor) raced greenly throughout the event.
Near the 500m EXCEPTION (P. Holmes) had to be steadied after improving on to the heels of WRITTEN ELEISON.
Approaching the 500m ASHA THE SMASHA became awkward when racing to the inside of HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN (L. Rolls).
PARSNIPS (R. Wiggins) laid in under pressure from rounding the home turn onwards and at a point approaching the 400m had to be directed out and away from the heels of EXCEPTION. As a result of this, LOVE HAPPENS (J. Hoopert) and ASHA THE SMASHA, which were following, both had to be steadied. PARSNIPS then continued to lay in and at a point leaving the 200m R. Wiggins was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount.
G. Cooksley, the rider of WRITTEN ELEISON, reported to stewards that due to his arm being tangled in the horse’s reins he was unable to fully utilise his whip in the home straight.
Post-race veterinary examinations of JOE’S COWBOY (K. Pope) and LOVE HAPPENS (J. Hoopert), both of which tailed out and finished a distant last, revealed no significant abnormalities.
Race 4: SMEG MAIDEN H’CAP - 1300m
1st – Firm But Fair 2nd – Credit Miss 3rd – For Nothing 4th – Thorn Man
Apprentice K. Matheson pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 118C(b) in that when weighing out as the rider of HAVEN PRINCESS he wore a modified safety vest. Apprentice Matheson was fined $500.
The start was delayed to allow the running of an interstate event.
HAVEN PRINCESS (K. Matheson) was slow to begin.
CREDIT MISS (R. McMahon) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the barrier partition.
THORN MAN (T. Harrison) laid in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice T. Harrison reported that the gelding finished the race off well and would appreciate races of further distance than that of today’s event. A post-race swab sample was taken.
Race 5: ILVE CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Tonzaticka 2nd – Florida Fellow 3rd – Millhousen 4th – Let It Loose
SHOW OF STRENGTH was a late scratching at 1.07 p.m. on veterinary advice that the horse had a nasal discharge and cough. Trainer L. Tipper was advised that a veterinary clearance for SHOW OF STRENGTH must be produced prior to the gelding’s next start.
MOT DE PASSE (T. Harrison), UNIQUE FUSE (P. Schmidt) and TONZATICKA (K. Pope) were slow to begin.
Near the 700m LA MARIPOSA (J. Taylor) and MOT DE PASSE were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of BAZINSKY (G. Goold) and at a point leaving the 600m LA MARIPOSA commenced to lay in away from BAZINSKY, causing MOT DE PASSE to be hampered and make contact with the running rail on a number of occasions.
A. Spinks, the rider of STIGORI, dropped his whip near the 200m.
Over the final 100m LA MARIPOSA laid in under pressure, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten at a point leaving the 50m.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of TONZATICKA, trainer B. Thornton reported that following the horse’s last start in which it hung quite badly, TONZATICKA was required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards, which it did successfully. He added that since taking over the training of the horse he has found the horse not to be intractable and he attributed this to the fact that TONZATICKA had been gelded following its last race start. He further added that whilst the gelding was able to win today, he was of the view that the horse would be better suited when stepped up over more ground.
Stewards afforded J. Taylor the opportunity to comment on the performance of LA MARIPOSA. He stated that due to the early pace of the race he was obliged to pressure the horse in the early and middle stages in order to hold its position. He added that this, along with the mare’s tendency to lay in throughout the event, may have had a detrimental effect on the performance and added that he had advised the stable that the mare would be best suited to races over longer distances at this stage of its career.
Stewards afforded G. Goold the opportunity to comment on the performance of BAZINSKY. He stated that after travelling well throughout the race he was confident when leaving the 400m that BAZINSKY was going to run into the race nicely, however after placing full pressure on the gelding it failed to let down as anticipated and finished the race off only fairly. He stated that he had recommended to connections to step the horse up over more ground.
Race 6: OLIVERI CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Revitalise 2nd – Tuatara 3rd – I’m Busted 4th – Little Miss Vicky
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer R. Heathcote’s stable representative, Miss M. Leitch, for the late declaration of R. Wiggins as the rider of LITTLE MISS VICKY.
ROYAL CRUSADER was a late scratching at 10.26 a.m. for veterinary reasons.
As L. Rolls was to be overweight, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of SYRIAN SHIRAZ. L. Rolls was reprimanded.
The start of this race was delayed when REVITALISE (M. Vance) was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Trainer D. Murphy was advised that REVITALISE must barrier trial prior to its next start.
TUATARA (R. McMahon) was tightened for room at the start between with MATILLA BAY (G. Killen) and MUNSTER PROVINCE (J. Letherby), which shifted in.
TIMELY SURPRISE (C. Small) jumped away awkwardly and hampered WELL CREDENTIALLED (G. Colless), SYRIAN SHIRAZ (M. Hellyer) and SAN FERNANDO (P. Schmidt).
MUNSTER PROVINCE and KEEPIN’ GRACE (R. Mason) raced wide throughout.
MATILLA BAY overraced during the early stages.
After passing the 400m REVITALISE shifted out to secure clear running and in doing so made heavy contact with LITTLE MISS VICKY (R. Wiggins), causing that horse to become unbalanced and shift out hampering I’M BUSTED (D. Griffin). Following this, REVITALISE shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
Apprentice M. Vance (REVITALISE) dropped her whip near the 100m.
Stewards questioned R. Mason regarding the tactics adopted on KEEPIN’ GRACE, along with the performance, which was below market expectations. Ms Mason stated that her intention was to ride the horse in a more forward position as is its customary racing pattern, however the filly could not muster sufficient speed to cross horses to its inside and she elected to restrain in an attempt to obtain a position closer to the fence with cover. In regards to the overall performance, she could offer no explanation other than to confirm her disappointment and added that the horse may have performed better last start due to the extremely heavy conditions. A. Jones, trainer of KEEPIN’ GRACE, reported that the horse pulled up mildly distressed. A veterinary examination of KEEPIN' GRACE confirmed this and Mr Jones was advised that a veterinary certificate will be required prior to the filly’s next start.
G. Colless was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of WELL CREDENTIALLED, which was below market expectations. He stated that after travelling well throughout the race WELL CREDENTIALLED failed to run on as anticipated in the straight and as it was the filly’s first start back from a spell, in his opinion it may take benefit from today’s performance.
Race 7: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS CLASS 3 PLATE - 1200m
1st – Zamboni 2nd – Lotachoc 3rd – Rock Of The Coast 4th – Tanzina
Acting under AR. 111A. (4), stewards amended the weight of ZAMBONI (R. McMahon) to 55.5kg when it was found to not have been afforded the 2kg fillies and mares allowance.
TANZINA (D. Robinson) was slow to begin.
LOTACHOC (J. Stanley) jumped away awkwardly and was further hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between BELLAVONANE (R. Jamieson) and WILL’N’GUS (G. Goold), which shifted in.
UNREFUSEABLE (A. Spinks) overraced during the early and middle stages and was obliged to shift wider on the track to avoid heels near the 800m and as a result raced wide throughout.
ROCK OF THE COAST (S. Scriven) and SETTHEWORLDONFIRE (C. Munce) both raced wide throughout.
RED MOHICAN (L. Williams) was obliged to race in restricted room for a short distance leaving the 500m between ROCK OF THE COAST and ZAMBONI, which shifted out.
ZAMBONI was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight before clipping heels near the 350m and blundering.
When questioned regarding the performance of SETTHEWORLDONFIRE, which finished a distant last, C. Munce stated that the filly did not show its customary early speed and became awkward in its action after leaving the 800m and shortened stride over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of SETTHEWORLDONFIRE revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B. Baldwin was advised that in light of today’s performance, stewards required SETTHEWORLDONFIRE to satisfactorily barrier trial prior to its next start.
G. Colless reported that GOA shortened stride in the home straight and felt awkward in its action over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of GOA revealed mild soreness behind. Trainer M. Kropp's stable representative, Mr T. Francis, was advised that they must provide a veterinary clearance for GOA prior to its next start.
Trainer L. White was advised that ROCK OF THE COAST, which bled from both nostrils post-race, would be ineligible to start for 3 months and prior to resuming racing it must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over at least 1000m in the presence of a steward.
S. Scriven, the rider of ROCK OF THE COAST, was fined $100 for using his whip in excess of 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.
Race 8: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Winmara 2nd – Ninth Duke 3rd – More On The Toe 4th – Just About Ready
The start of this race was delayed due to equipment being left on the course after the running of Race 7 and having to be retrieved from the 1200m start.
TRIUMPHANT ONE (P. Holmes) and ENTERPRISE STAR (A. Spinks) were both slow to begin.
BITASILK (T. Harrison) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 800m TRIUMPHANT ONE shifted out to improve and as a result raced wide from that point onwards, and made the home turn extremely wide.
RAMBLING ON (G. Colless), which was held up from approaching the 500m, was steadied when tightened for room between the tiring BITASILK and ENTERPRISE STAR, which shifted out to obtain clear running. Jockey Spinks was reprimanded for this incident.
Stewards questioned apprentice T. Harrison regarding the tactics adopted on BITASILK, in particular her reasons for settling in a forward position which is in contrast to the horse’s normal racing pattern. Ms Harrison stated that she had been instructed to allow the horse to take up a more forward position if possible as in recent starts the mare has not been finishing its races off well. These instructions were confirmed by stable representative Mr T. Francis, who was advised to remind trainer M. Kropp of his obligations under the rules to advise stewards should an alteration of tactics be intended.
Stewards also questioned jockey P. Holmes regarding the tactics on TRIUMPHANT ONE, which settled at the tail of the field in today’s event. Jockey Holmes stated that whilst he did not anticipate being positioned at the tail of the field, the horse did not begin well and bearing in mind his instructions, which were not to overly pressure the horse during the early stages, he elected to take hold and take up a trailing position. He added that in his opinion the overall performance was disappointing. Trainer L. Treloar advised stewards that the instructions were to be in a more forward position, however he also confirmed that he had instructed jockey Holmes not to be overly aggressive during the early stages.
P. Holmes, the rider of TRIUMPHANT ONE, was fined $100 for using the whip more than 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.
Race 9: HARVEY NORMAN KAWANA WATERS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Dreams And Wishes 2nd – Azzimato 3rd – Oceltip 4th – Mystic Mahal
After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds to lodge an objection, G. Cooksley, the rider of AZZIMATO, placed 3rd by the Judge, indicated that he wished to lodge an objection against OCELTIP (G. Colless) being declared 2nd, alleging interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the film, stewards established that at a point near the 100m OCELTIP, after laying in under pressure, was corrected by its rider and shifted out, forcing G. Cooksley to stop riding AZZIMATO and shift that runner wider on the track, making contact with BIRDS OF SONG (S. Scriven), which in turn was also forced wider at that stage. In the circumstances, stewards were comfortably satisfied that the interference suffered to AZZIMATO was sufficient to reverse the head margin between the runners and upheld the objection and semaphored correct weight on the amended placings of 12, 13, 3 and 2. Subsequent to this hearing, a further inquiry was held into the interference suffered to AZZIMATO and also jockey Colless’s actions in directing outwards at that point of the race, which ultimately afforded clear running to DREAMS AND WISHES (R. Wiggins), which had been held up for a short distance approaching that point on the heels of MYSTIC MAHAL (C. Munce). Stewards found that the interference suffered to AZZIMATO was a result of G. Colless attempting to rectify OCELTIP’s racing manners, which were to shift in under pressure at that stage. Stewards were also satisfied that at the relevant time jockey Colless was not aware that the horse improving to his inside was his mount’s stablemate and that jockey Colless’s actions were as a result of having received a call that a runner to his inside was suffering interference to his inside, and given that his horse was shifting in at that stage, stewards were satisfied that his actions were in an attempt to prevent further interference.
BIRDS OF SONG raced wide during the early stages.
OFFSET PRINCE (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.
AZZIMATO (G. Cooksley) had difficulty obtaining clear running during the early stages of the home straight.
R. McMahon, the rider of HARISH, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out to a point where there was insufficient room for GOLDEN PALMS (P. Holmes) to remain to his outside, resulting in GOLDEN PALMS being tightened for room between HARISH and IRISH GUARD, clipped that runners heels and blundered and had to be checked. R. McMahon’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 23 June, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 4 July 2012.
