As D. Missen, L. Cassidy and J. Byrne were indisposed, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
Race 1: Patties Foods Maiden Plate – 1400m
1st – Adalfe 2nd – Lifting Benny 3rd – Cracow 4th – Rough And Reckless
Connections advised that ROUGH AND RECKLESS, which overraced last start, would be ridden more quietly today. After beginning well, apprentice R. Hurdle attempted to restrain ROUGH AND RECKLESS to take up a position just off the speed however due to the lack of pace in the early stages, the horse was left in the leading position. ROUGH AND RECKLESS overraced in the early stages.
Apprentice A. Holt was fined $200 for failing to claim his full allowance on RUTHLESS BABE.
DOUBTING THOMAS (K. Pope) began awkwardly and shifted out, hampering LIFTING BENNY (B. Hull).
Approaching the 400m, LESKOVAR (A. Allen) had to be eased when tightened for room between IDLE MINDS (G. Cooksley) and LIFTING BENNY, which shifted out marginally.
Leaving the 100m, ROCKIN PARTY (R. Mason) shifted out and hampered DON’T GET CRANKY (K. Wharton)
LIFTING BENNY shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
ADALFE (G. Goold) raced greenly over the concluding states.
IDLE MINDS (G. Cooksley) raced wide throughout.
Race 2: Edgell Class insufficiently clear Benchmark 80 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Mr Slick 2nd – Hangover Henry 3rd – Sheedy 4th – Fear No Other
SOMMERSEA DRIVE (K. Pope) and FEAR NO OTHER (K. Wharton) overraced in the early and middle stages of the race.
Upon straightening, SHEEDY (T. Huxham) attempted to shift out to improve to the outside of GET THAT INDYA (E. Wilkinson) and in doing so made heavy contact with MR SLICK (D. Griffin). As a result of contact, MR SLICK shifted in, making contact with SHEEDY, resulting in SHEEDY being held up on the heels of GET THAT INDYA until a point leaving the 200m.
J. Stanley reported that he placed JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS under pressure from a point leaving the 600m, however the gelding failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Jockey Stanley was of the view that JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer J. McLachlan confirmed that JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS would be sent for a spell.
Jockey Stanley (JOHNNIEONTHEROCKS) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.
HANGOVER HENRY (M. Cahill) was momentarily held up on straightening.
Trainer S. Mackinnon was advised that GET THAT INDYA, which suffered a bleeding attack during the race, will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.
Race 3: Masterfoods ‘Why cook when you can create’ Maiden Plate – 1000m
1st – King Eagle 2nd – The Singing Bullet 3rd – Black Monty 4th – Get On
At the start, FITTING FINALE (B. Abbey) began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping GET ON (T. Bell).
JUST A ROCKSTAR (J. Letherby) began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping SHOW COAST (K. Pope), resulting in SHOW COAST and JUST A ROCKSTAR losing ground at the start.
BUNDU BOY (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
Near the 800m, BLACK MONTY (S. Guymer) overraced for a short distance when awkwardly placed at the heels of THE SINGING BULLET (R. Myers).
Leaving the 200m, GET ON shifted in abruptly.
From the 200m to the 100m, BLACK MONTY and THE SINGING BULLET brushed on a number of occasions.
J. Letherby reported that JUST A ROCKSTAR had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight and proved difficulty to ride.
FITTING FINALE raced wide throughout.
Jockey T. Bell was afforded the opportunity to explain the tactics adopted on GET ON. T. Bell stated that he intended to take up a forward position, however after suffering interference at the start, he was obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the race. He added that GET ON was inclined to race greenly in the early stages of the home straight, however near the 150m began to race more tractably and finished the race off well.
Race 4: Priestley’s Gourmet Delights QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Written Eleison 2nd – Song For Leo 3rd – Peterbonetti 4th - Talon
The start was delayed as a result of TALON requiring the attention of the farrier after it cast its near fore plate in the enclosure.
TALON (K. Pope) began awkwardly, resulting in jockey Pope becoming unbalanced for a short distance.
HARD NUT TO CRACK (J. Stanley) and MAZZARDI (A. Allen) were slow to begin.
ISIS DEVIL (K. Wharton) was slow to begin and as a result was obliged to race wide for the majority of the race, and in the early stages of the home straight had a tendency to lay in under pressure.
Approaching the 600m, COMMANDS THE TRUTH (M. Hellyer) became awkward and shifted out, taking HARD NUT TO CRACK out on to SPACE JAM (D. Griffin).
STRUTTER (C. Small) overraced in the middle stages.
Near the 800m, COMMANDS THE TRUTH had to be eased when tightened for room between CRAIGLEA ART (M. Cahill) and PETERBONETTI (T. Huxham), which shifted in. T. Huxham, rider of PETERBONETTI, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. As a consequence, ALAZANI (E. Wilkinson), which was following, had to be restrained and raced ungenerously for a short distance.
Passing the 350m, MAZZARDI had to be eased to avoid the heels of STRUTTER, which shifted out. C. Small, rider of STRUTTER, was reprimanded.
COMMANDS THE TRUTH raced greenly in the home straight, and leaving the 100m shifted in, taking STRUTTER in on to MAZZARDI, which had to be eased.
E. Wilkinson reported that ALAZANI raced greenly throughout.
TALON, SONG FOR LEO (T. Bell), and SPACE JAM raced wide for the majority of the event.
A post-race veterinary examination of DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE revealed the gelding to have bled from the off side nostril. Connections were advised that DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE would be required to compete in a 1000m gallop to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to race again.
A post-race veterinary examination of SONG FOR LEO revealed swelling to the off medial sesamoid. Trainer T. Edmonds was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for SONG FOR LEO prior to its next race start.
Race 5: McCain Finger Food Class 1 H'cap – 1600m
1st – Azzimato 2nd – Suite Heavens 3rd – Valera 4th – Stand’n’stare
Trainer L. Gough was reprimanded for presenting PSYCLONE MISS late to the enclosure.
Correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of the 2nd placegettder, SUITE HEAVENS, to view footage of the straight to ascertain if they had grounds to lodge a protest against AZZIMATO being declared the winner. After viewing the film, the connections elected not to proceed with a protest.
CHURCH LANE (R. Mason) began awkwardly and lost considerable ground.
EIDSVOLD (K. Wharton) and STAND’N’STARE were slow to begin.
Near the 800m, VALERA (A. Holt) had to be eased when tightened for room between WAR STORIES (B. Richardson) and MARKOUT (G. Geran), both of which shifted ground.
Approaching the 300m, STAND’N’STARE improved into a narrow run between TIGERLICIOUS (T. Bell) and OMNIA MUNDA MUNDIS (A. Taylor), and when laying in and away from OMNIA MUNDA MUNDIS, STAND’N’STARE made heavy contact with TIGERLICIOUS and as a result of the heavy contact, STAND’N’STARE was turned inwards, resulting in TIGERLICIOUS being tightened for room and having to be checked. At a subsequent inquiry, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the actions of any particular rider were blameworthy.
LEGAZPI (A. Allen) was held up near the 300m and shortly thereafter was disappointed for clear running between WAR STORIES and MARKOUT (G. Geran), and was then held up to a point near the 200m.
Over the concluding stages, AZZIMATO shifted out under pressure and when attempting to improve its position outside of AZZIMATO, SUITE HEAVENS shifted out, tightening the running of PSYCLONE MISS (R. Hurdle), which had to be checked to avoid the heels of SUITE HEAVENS. After hearing evidence from all riders and viewing the patrol vide, E. Wilkinson, rider of AZZIMATO, was issued with a reprimand for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount when shifting ground. M. Hellyer, rider of SUITE HEAVENS, was also severely reprimanded for failing to take sufficient measure to keep his mount straight in these circumstances.
MARKOUT (G. Geran) and PSYCLONE MISS (R. Hurdle) raced wide for the majority of the race.
When questioned regarding the performance of CHURCH LANE, R. Mason stated that after being slow to begin, CHURCH LANE trailed the field for the majority of the race and had a tendency to lay out, and as a result she was unable to improve her position despite her efforts. Jockey Mason added that once she was able to balance CHURCH LANE upon straightening, the gelding began to race truly and finished the race off well. Trainer A. Jones stated that since adding blinkers the horse has missed the start on 2 occasions and intended to remove the blinkers. Mr Jones also felt that the horse may have come to the end of its preparation and it would be spelled.
Race 6: Nestle Professional Merle Koch 20 Years of Service Class 1 H'cap - 1200m
1st – Beseech 2nd – Leveraction 3rd – Luck From Above 4th – Wind Wand
RED RAPTOR (B. Richardson) began awkwardly.
SPURFECT (R. McMahon) and SPIRITOFTHEDRAGON (K. Wharton) bumped on jumping away, resulting in SPURFECT losing ground at the start.
FINE TUNE (A. Allen) was hampered on jumping away between MAY (A. Holt) and WIND WAND (T. Huxham), which shifted in.
W. O’Connell, rider of SCOTCH ROCKET, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of WIND WAND (T. Huxham), resulting in that horse having to be checked and lose ground and as a consequence HILL AND GRACE (T. Bell), which was racing to the inside of WIND WAND had to be eased and lost its position. W. O’Connell was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 25 August and to expire at midnight 5 September.
Passing the 1000m, BEAUTRIX (E. Wilkinson) shifted out and bumped AUTHORITATIVE (R. Myers), which was taken out on to MARGARET’S WISH (G. Killen), which in turn shifted out abruptly, resulting in WIND WAND being forced out and racing ungenerously for some distance. Connections will be advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of WIND WAND.
BESEECH (J. Stanley) and SPURFECT (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of BEAUTRIX E. Wilkinson stated that the gelding raced flat today and in his opinion had come to the end of its preparation. Connections advised that consideration would be given to sending BEAUTRIX for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of BEAUTRIX failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned the tactics adopted on MAY, which appeared to be in contrast to the horse’s normal racing pattern, apprentice Holt stated that he was instructed to restrain the mare in the early stages and attempt to take up a position with cover as it had shown a tendency to overrace in its previous starts. Trainer R. Bradshaw will be interviewed regarding this matter.
Race 7: PFD Food Services Benchmark 75 H'cap – 1800m
1st – Desert Vision 2nd – Triumphant One 3rd – Diving Reign 4th – More On The Toe
DESERT VISION (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FIGASAURUS, apprentice Holt stated that the horse became awkward for a short distance in the middle stages of the race. He added that he began to improve into the race rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the race, however failed to sustain that run and finished the race off only fairly. A post-race veterinary examination of FIGASAURUS revealed the horse to have sustained a laceration to the near hind leg.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on PINOT GIRL, which appeared to be in contrast to the mares normal racing pattern, jockey T. Bell stated that it was the intention of both himself and the connections to have the mare take up a handy position, however after being obliged to race wide in the early stages, he elected to allow PINOT GIRL to stride forward and take up a leading position close to the rails. Jockey Bell added that despite travelling comfortably in the lead, PINOT GIRL failed to finish the race off as expected. Trainer B. Guy confirmed the instructions and noted his disappointment in the performance of PINOT GIRL, adding that he would now reconsider the horse’s current racing program.
Race 8: The Fonterra Class 2 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Chubby Chipmunk 2nd – Saveeda 3rd – Dolly Dolly 4th – Rogertheredneck
The start of this race was delayed when MOUNTAIN OF GOLD dislodged its jockey en route to the barriers and then galloped for some considerable distance. Subsequent to the race, all monies invested on MOUNTAIN OF GOLD were order to be refunded, with the following deductions applicable. to bets placed on winner and place-getters prior to 4.37 pm.

SIR SLIPPER (C. Small) was slow to begin.
ROCKLEA RAIDER (A. Allen) overraced in the early stages and leaving the 600m attempted to shift out and in doing so bumped EXPLORER CLUB (M. Hellyer). As a consequence, ROYAL CRUSADER (K. Wharton), which was following, had to be eased when tightened for room when ROCKLEA RAIDER shifted back in.
ROCKLEA RAIDER had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the home straight and near the 200m, when disappointed for a run between WITHDRU (T. Bell) and ROGERTEHREDNECK (D. Griffin), was obliged to shift out to obtain clear running.
EXPLORER CLUB, CHUBBY CHIPMUNK and SKEETER (B. Richardson) raced wide throughout.
