GENERAL

As R. McMahon was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: RESORT PUBLISHING MAIDEN PLATE - 1400m
1st – Pat’s Boy 2nd – Buakaw 3rd – Bolts’n’holts 4th – Give It Berries

Connections of PAT'S BOY (J. Stanley) advised that it will be the intention to have the horse ridden in a more forward position than at its previous start. The horse was ridden accordingly.

The saddle on BENDIGO BELLE (B. Richardson) shifted during its preliminary, resulting in the horse working strongly. As a result, the start of this race was delayed to enable BENDIGO BELLE to be resaddled after arriving at the barriers and to undergo a veterinary examination which cleared the horse to start.

The start was further delayed when BUAKAW (K. Wharton) proved difficult to load. Trainer K. Munce was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners.

STALWART TYCOON (C. Kearney) began awkwardly.

BOLTS'N'HOLTS (D. Browne) threw its head in the air on jumping away.

DOUBTFUL PRINCE (L. Appo) overraced in the early an middle stages.

BOLTS'N'HOLTS raced wide for the majority of the event.

Near the 600m DOUBTFUL PRINCE, which was overracing, improved on to the heels of the tiring SEQUA BLOOM (M. Cahill) and when being steadied shifted in tightening the running of PAT’S BOY, which had to be checked and lost its position. BUAKAW, which was following, was also inconvenienced in this incident. As stewards deemed this to be a racing incident, no further action was taken.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BOLTS'N'HOLTS, jockey D. Browne stated that it was the intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position, however with the fast pace early, the horse was unable to muster sufficient speed to clear runners to its inside and as a result was obliged to race three wide for the majority of the event. He added that under the circumstances he was not disappointed with the gelding’s performance and was of the opinion that the horse would be better suited to a distance longer than that of today’s event where it would be able to obtain a forward position. He further added that the horse may benefit from the addition of blinkers, which he advised the trainer. Trainer J. McLachlan agreed with jockey Browne’s assessment and advised stewards that a decision as to whether blinkers will be added to the gear of BOLTS'N'HOLTS would depend on whether the horse is stepped up in distance or races over distances similar to that of today’s event.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on STATING, which raced in a more forward position today than that of its previous starts, jockey E. Wilkinson stated that his instructions were that if the horse was to begin well, to try and have it in a more forward position. Jockey Wilkinson said that as a result of being caught wide he elected to push forward which resulted in the horse racing outside the leader to obtain a position closer to the running rail. Trainer C. Stott confirmed the instructions to jockey Wilkinson and also agreed it was not the intention for the horse to be up sharing the lead. Whilst stewards noted the circumstances, Mr Stott was nonetheless advised of his obligations to inform stewards if there is to be any change to a horse’s normal racing pattern. Mr Stott further advised that in view of today’s performance, STATING would now be sent for a spell.

Clark-Peoples advised stewards that she was disappointed with the mare’s performance today and pending further veterinary examinations will give consideration to HEART OF TEXAS being sent for a short let-up. Ms Clark-Peoples gave an undertaking to advise stewards of any further findings from subsequent tests. A post-race veterinary examination of HEART OF TEXAS revealed no abnormalities.

When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of GOODHORSEHYMN, trainer C. Jordan stated that in his opinion the horse has matured going into its second preparation and had benefited from a step up in distance and winkers on for the first time today in a race that he believed was not of strong opposition. Munce), resulting in BELLE D’AMOUR being tightened on to the hind quarters of KELBENJAR, having to be checked and losing its rightful running. Apprentice Derbyshire’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 14 October, and expire following the day meeting at Ipswich on Friday, 26 October 2012.

Race 8: PANDANUS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m

FRAYED (L. Tarrant) was slow to begin.

TAPIKI (L. Cassidy) began awkwardly.

L. Appo, the rider of SUSASHI, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of FINNIGAN'S FOLLY (C. Munce), resulting in that runner having to be checked when making contact with the running rail. L. Leaving the 900m FINNIGAN'S FOLLY (C. Munce) shifted in making contact with the running rail.

Leaving the 600m MISTER TIPS (A. Taylor) improved on to the heels of DIXIE FLYER (K. Wharton) and had to be steadied. In this incident both SUSASHI (L. Appo) and FINNIGAN'S FOLLY, which were following, had to be steadied as a result.

Near the 100m MISTER TIPS was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of A. Spinks (VOODOO BLACK MAGIC).

Trainer Ms B. Sutton reported that DIXIE FLYER had been galloped on on the off hind leg during the event.

Trainer L. Ross was questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on VOODOO BLACK MAGIC today where the horse was ridden forward to obtain the lead, which is in contrast to its racing pattern in previous starts. Mr Ross stated that the gelding has been a very difficult horse to train and has had a habit of missing the start and as such he had instructed jockey A. Spinks to ride the horse in an aggressive manner and when the horse did begin well it had been able to race forward and these had also been the instructions for the horse at its previous start for this stable. Stewards noted the explanation, however advised Mr Ross of his obligations to inform stewards if there is to be any change to a horse’s normal racing pattern.
