SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Stewards today inquired into the circumstances surrounding the death of 2YO gelding BLU ENZO. After taking evidence from licensed trainer Natalie McCall, stewards established that on 16 January BLU ENZO, after becoming agitated in the on-course swimming pool at approximately 6 am, passed away. A post-mortem was carried out on the horse by veterinary surgeon Stuart Bryce which indicated that a prior condition exacerbated by the physical exertion of swimming had resulted in the gelding’s sudden death. After taking into account all the circumstances, trainer N. McCall was charged with a breach of AR. 64J in that she had failed in her obligation to notify stewards of the death of a racehorse and after pleading guilty was fined the sum of $200. In assessing penalty stewards took into account mitigating circumstances.

From Doomben 2 February 2013 – Race 9: Apprentice G. Goold, the rider of AIN’T SHE SWEET, was fined $100 under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

GENERAL

After being unable to fulfil engagements at Doomben on 2 February due to illness and injury, both apprentice M. Vance and jockey P. Hammersley were examined by the Club doctor and cleared to fulfil their engagements.

Race 1: ASSET FIRE & SECURITY PTY LTD BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 1000m
1st – Rocky King 2nd – Choral 3rd – Queenofbeaudesert 4th – Explore The World

Near the 700m QUEENOFBEAUDESERT (J. Taylor), when inclined to lay in, was steadied from the heels of ROCKY KING (C. Pye), which shifted out.

Race 2: NUMBER ONE QUALITY HOMES PTY LTD BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Precious Mandy 2nd – Denwood 3rd – Troilus Fuse 4th – Novaspur

Trainer M. Brosnan was fined $100 for failing to declare D. Browne as the rider of PLATAMONE CASTLE by the prescribed time.

NOVASPUR (J. Stanley) and RUNNING VIXEN (B. Swaffer) overraced during the middle stages. RUNNING VIXEN also commenced to hang for a short distance after leaving the 800m.

D. Browne was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of PLATAMONE CASTLE, which raced below market expectations. Jockey Browne stated that the gelding travelled well until approaching the 400m, however when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding and he was at a loss to explain the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of PLATAMONE CASTLE failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 3: PROPERTY ONLY MAIDEN H’CAP - 1600m
1st – Esprit De Corps 2nd – Royal Lake 3rd – Bellhop Kingdom 4th – Zionic

ESPRIT DE CORPS (D. Browne) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out hampering both ZIONIC (B. Appo) and BELLHOP KINGDOM (K. Wharton).

ESPRIT DE CORPS raced greenly and shifted out under pressure in the home straight, placing its rider at a disadvantage over the concluding stages.

ESPRIT DE CORPS lost its near fore plate in running.

Stewards inquired into the tactics adopted on ZIONIC. Of particular concern to stewards was apprentice Appo’s decision to continue to improve during the early stages to assume the lead near the 1200m where it appeared he had opportunity to steady and hold a position outside the lead. Furthermore, stewards were concerned with apprentice Appo’s action to steady the pace to the extent that he relinquished the lead approaching the 800m and was positioned approximately 2 lengths behind the leader. Apprentice Appo stated that he was not concerned with the pace being set in the early stages and when jockey Browne (ESPRIT DE CORPS) elected to steady approaching the 1200m, he was happy to proceed to the lead, however in hindsight he may have steadied the pace too quickly approaching the 800m. Stewards advised apprentice Appo that in their opinion he had erred in his actions during the early stages and again approaching the 800m, however given his relative inexperience stewards took no further action other than to advise Racing Queensland Apprentice Liaison Officer.

Race 4: RUMBA BEACH RESORT MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – Grandees Gem 2nd – Shady Deal 3rd – Sequends 4th – Raised To Rock

GRANDEES GEM (A. Spinks) jumped away awkwardly, made contact with FLYING WEAPON (B. Swaffer) and lost ground.

SPEEDMEISTER (C. Pye) jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground.

Apprentice B. Appo, the rider of GET IT RIGHT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of STALWART NOVA (C. Kearney), resulting in STALWART NOVA being checked and losing its rightful position. Apprentice Appo’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 10 February, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 23 February 2013.

Near the 900m GANGSTA GEORGE (G. Goold) had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of SPEEDMEISTER which shifted in when overracing at the heels of SHADY DEAL (J. Stanley).

Near the 800m STALWART NOVA commenced to hang when obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of CHIEF SEATTLE (M. Vance), which laid in despite the efforts of its rider and as a result STALWART NOVA was forced to be steadied.

FLYING WEAPON raced wide throughout.

DR HOUSE (M. McKenzie) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Race 5: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – Turvanna 2nd – Dadsaidjetta 3rd – Haven Queen 4th – Picture It

ROCKIN’ SHOCKIN (Michael Palmer) and PRICKLY BALLROOM (M. Speers) were both slow to begin.

HE’S A REBEL (G. Goold) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with PICTURE IT (J. Lloyd).

HE’S A REBEL raced greenly during the early stages before racing wide throughout.

FALVINA (J. Stanley) raced wide throughout.

When the pace slackened leaving the 800m DADSAIDJETTA (E. Wilkinson) had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of GO THIAGO GO (J. Hoopert) which had been taken in by FALVINA. As a result of this PICTURE IT, which was following, was also obliged to steady from the heels of DADSAIDJETTA.

Over the concluding stages TURVANNA (P. Hammersley) shifted out under pressure, taking HAVEN QUEEN (B. Appo) wider on the track.

After passing the winning post TURVANNA shifted in abruptly, making heavy contact with DADSAIDJETTA.

Race 6: PFD FOODSERVICES QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – Tontoro 2nd – Eternal Heart 3rd – Miamley 4th – Delectable Dora

As apprentice A. Holt was to be overweight in Races 6 and 7, apprentice G. Goold was substituted as the rider of MIAMLEY and BILLUM. Apprentice Holt was fined $200.

SKIPPER’S RULE (E. Wilkinson) was slow to begin.

DELECTABLE DORA (G. Cooksley) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Shortly after the start TONTORO (M. Cahill) shifted in making contact with GO THE SHOW (T. Harrison).

DELECTABLE DORA raced wide throughout.

Leaving the 800m GO THE SHOW laid out for a short distance.

COMMANDS THE TRUTH (J. Byrne) was also inclined to lay out passing the 800m.

Near the 500m ETERNAL HEART (J. Lloyd) was forced wider on the track when MIAMLEY (G. Goold) shifted out to secure clear running.

A. Pattillo reported that COURT ACTION did not race comfortably in today’s rain-affected conditions.

Race 7: SECURE ACCESS PTY LTD BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Laughing Crusader 2nd – Flying Dynamite 3rd – Galaxy King 4th – Modern Al

SUMMARISE (J. Lloyd) was slow to begin.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Vance regarding the tactics adopted on ROCKET BOOTS and also the overall performance, which was below market expectations. Ms Vance stated that it had been her intentions to ride ROCKET BOOTS in a forward position, which has been its customary racing pattern, however despite the gelding being ridden vigorously during the early stages, it was unable to muster sufficient speed and she was obliged to take up a midfield position. Regarding the performance, she stated that ROCKET BOOTS, in her opinion, travelled well despite the rain-affected conditions until the 600m when she was obliged to pressure the horse in order to have it hold its position and ROCKET BOOTS failed to run on over the concluding stages and proved very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of ROCKET BOOTS (M. Vance) revealed no significant abnormalities. A swab sample was taken from ROCKET BOOTS.

Stewards questioned R. Wilson, the trainer of LAUGHING CRUSADER, regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance. He stated that as the gelding races best on rain-affected tracks he had expected a forward showing. Stewards accepted the explanation.

P. Hammersley reported to stewards that THE MIDDLEWEIGHT was not suited to the pace of today’s event, and when the pace quickened near the 600m his mount was unable to quicken despite his urgings. A post-race veterinary examination of THE MIDDLEWEIGHT revealed no significant abnormalities.

GALAXY KING (K. Wharton) lost its off hind plate in running.

Race 8: CHAZ FLOORS CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Get On 2nd – Bundu Boy 3rd – Anchorfel 4th – Emerton

Trainer M. Palmer was fined $100 for failing to declare apprentice T. Harrison as the rider of ZAHAVAH by the prescribed time.

Trainer A. Mead was fined $100 for failing to declare apprentice S. Payne as the rider of CRAIGLEA MASTA by the prescribed time.

BUNDU BOY (P. Schmidt) was slow to begin.

CRAIGLEA MASTA (S. Payne) and BRIEN’S GIRL (J. Taylor) were both tightened for room at the start between HOT ICE (J. Hoopert) and SAMMY LOU (J. Lloyd), which shifted out.

Near the 700m FRENCH COMMAND (B. Swaffer) had to be steadied when racing in restricted room between BAG OF RIDDLES (G. Killen) and TRADIES HOPE (C. Kearney), which shifted in slightly.

GET ON (J. Byrne), CRAIGLEA MASTA, HOT ICE, KEEPIN’ GRACE (M. Hellyer) and EMERTON (K. Wharton) all raced wide throughout.

Rounding the home turn BUNDU BOY (P. Schmidt), after attempting to secure clear running to the inside of OPEN HEART (G. Cooksley), had to be steadied when OPEN HEART shifted in slightly. As a result, BUNDU BOY overreacted and shifted out abruptly across the heels of OPEN HEART, causing ZAHAVAH (T. Harrison) to be inconvenienced. Trainer N. Hocking will be advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of BUNDU BOY.

J. Byrne, the rider of GET ON, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 100m he permitted his mount to shift in, tightening the running of KEEPIN’ GRACE, which resulted in KEEPIN' GRACE being taken in on to the rightful running of HOT ICE, which was tightened on to the hind quarters of CRAIGLEA MASTA and had to be checked. J. Byrne’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 9 February, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 21 February 2013.

CRAIGLEA MASTA was found to have blood in the nearside nostril following the event, however as the horse had sustained a nasal laceration, no action was taken.

A post-race veterinary examination of BAG OF RIDDLES revealed no significant findings.

The veterinary surgeon reported that HOT ICE lost its off hind plate in running and as a result sustained a minor hoof injury.

Race 9: PITCHERS HOSPITALITY SUPPLIES CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Loupets 2nd – Williams Agenda 3rd – Top Rada 4th – Royal Consort

Both TOP RADA (G. Goold) and PERSIAN STORY (G. Killen) were tightened for room at the start between MORGAN MISS (I. Coombes) and WILLIAMS AGENDA (K. Wharton), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

FOR MIA (M. Hellyer) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with VIENNE (M. Cahill).

Approaching the 1000m ROYAL CONSORT (S. Payne) was steadied to avoid the heels of LOUPETS (D. Browne), which shifted in. D. Browne was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

DYNAMIC JACK (B. Appo), VAIN DAZZLER (C. Pye), MORGAN MISS, TOP RADA and STREAM OF LIGHT (P. Schmidt) all raced wide throughout.

T. Bell reported to stewards that from the wide alley in today’s event he was obliged to position BRAVE PALATINSK further back in the field than he had intended.

M. Hellyer reported to stewards that in his opinion FOR MIA failed to handle the rain-affected track conditions and this could explain the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of FOR MIA revealed no significant findings.

Race 10: CHOOK FLYNN MEMORIAL CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Elmantosh 2nd – Uppland 3rd – Neurum Road 4th – Mortgage Lifter

The start of this race was delayed when REMY MARTINI (G. Killen), which became fractious and was cast in the barriers, had to be inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed to take its place in the field, and then proved difficult to load, causing a further delay.

DAWN RETURN (T. Harrison) was slow to begin.

MAXIMUM COMMAND (A. Pattillo) jumped out at the start, taking REMY MARTINI out on to JEWEL OF CASHEL (M. Hellyer).

OFFSET PRINCE (K. Wharton), UPPLAND (P. Schmidt), BEE PLUS (M. Cahill), ELMANTOSH (P. Hammersley) and ROCKLEA RAIDER (K. Matheson) all raced wide throughout.

Near the 200m THE WHO (J. Hoopert) had to be steadied when tightened for room between LA FLASH (J. Johnson), which shifted in slightly, and SUMMER QUEST (S. Payne), which shifted out under pressure.

A post-race veterinary examination of JEWEL OF CASHEL, which pulled up quickly after passing the winning post, found the mare to be sore behind. Trainer M. Bailey was advised the a veterinary clearance would be required for JEWEL OF CASHEL before it is permitted to race again.
