GENERAL

As apprentices T. Harrison and M. Wood were injured and jockey Michael Palmer was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Due to notification of a traffic incident on the Gateway Motorway near Deagon causing a likely delay to the arrival times of some runners on course, stewards amended the starting times of all races, with Races 1 to 7 being rescheduled to the starting times of Races 2 to 8 respectively, with Race 8 to be run at 5:15 p.m.

Race 1: SKY RACING MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m

BATTERIES INCLUDED (B. Appo) was slow to begin.

STALWART NOVA (C. Kearney) was hampered at the start between AROUND THE LEGS (E. Wilkinson) and SNIPPETS CAVIAR (R. McMahon), both of which shifted ground.

Approaching the 800m STALWART NOVA, when being restrained, overraced at the heels of SNIPPETS CAVIAR.

ABOVE US (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.

On return to scale K. Davidson reported that FLY COURT raced greenly throughout and when the pace slackened approaching the 800m overraced at the heels of BEAUVICTIS (D. Browne) for a short distance when restrained. Stewards noted that as a result of this, RUM RATION (C. McIver) and BATTERIES INCLUDED, which were following, had to be steadied from heels.

Stewards afforded R. Wiggins the opportunity to explain the tactics he adopted on ABOVE US. Jockey Wiggins stated that he had intended being closer to the lead, however after travelling a short distance it became apparent that he would be caught wide so he elected to take hold in an endeavour to obtain a position closer to the fence.

When questioned regarding the performance of BEAUVICTIS, D. Browne stated that the horse was having its first start from a spell for a new trainer and had shown early speed in a trial so the intention was to take advantage of that today with the good barrier. He said he had ridden forward to cross the runners to his inside in order to obtain a position on the rail and in doing so found himself in what he believed was a good position trailing AROUND THE LEGS. He added that he was satisfied with the way the horse travelled in the early stages, but disappointed with the manner in which it failed to quicken when placed under pressure near the 500m. He further added that BEAUVICTIS may be better suited in races over distances further than that of today’s event.

When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of SNIPPETS CAVIAR, jockey R. McMahon reported that in his opinion SNIPPETS CAVIAR did not travel comfortably at any stage in the event and he was forced to place pressure on the gelding at a point leaving the 600m. He added that in his opinion SNIPPETS CAVIAR would be more suited to racing over 1400m and may benefit from the addition of blinkers.

Race 2: YALUMBA WINES MAIDEN H’CAP - 1600m

Due to transport difficulties J. Taylor was unable to arrive on course in time to fulfil his engagement on BADBOYCURTIS and P. Hammersley was substituted as the rider of that gelding.

M. Hellyer, the rider of HOSPITAL NURSE, was found guilty of a charge under AR. 137(d) in that near the 1200m he excessively reduced the pace of his mount when obtaining the lead after crossing KAZAN (C. McIver), resulting in KAZAN being placed awkwardly at the heels of HOSPITAL NURSE, having to be checked and forced to shift out to avoid the heels of HOSPITAL NURSE. In issuing a severe reprimand to jockey Hellyer, stewards took into account his overall good riding record and that he had not previously breached this rule.

BADBOYCURTIS (P. Hammersley) raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Near the 500m WAY UP THERE (E. Wilkinson) shifted out to improve and in doing so forced both RETRO RAZZ (R. Jamieson) and MORINGAS MO JO (S. Shield) wider on the track.

P. Hammersley, the rider of BADBOYCURTIS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 300m he angled his mount to the outside of KAZAN in an attempt to obtain clear running where there was insufficient room to do so, contributing to interference suffered by ROCK LOGIC (T. Bell), which was tightened for room on to the hind quarters of WAY UP THERE, resulting in ROCK LOGIC being checked when buffeted between those two runners and losing its position. Jockey Hammersley’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 7 April, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 14 April 2013.

C. McIver, the rider of KAZAN, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 300m he allowed his mount to shift out under heavy riding, causing BADBOYCURTIS to be taken out, further tightening the running of ROCK LOGIC, which contributed to the interference suffered by ROCK LOGIC, which was buffeted between BADBOYCURTIS and WAY UP THERE, resulting in ROCK LOGIC being checked at that stage and losing its rightful running. Jockey McIver’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 6 April, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 13 April 2013.

FLEET ANCHOR (L. Tarrant) was held up for clear running in the home straight between the 300m and the 100m when attempting a tight run to the inside of HOSPITAL NURSE (M. Hellyer) before being steadied and directed to the outside of that horse near the 100m.

Stewards questioned trainer F. Phillips regarding the seemingly improved performance of WAY UP THERE. Mr Phillips advised that in his opinion the filly appreciated the step up to the 1600m of today’s event as the horse’s previous racing and work has suggested that the filly has shown she would race well over more ground. He added that in his opinion WAY UP THERE was not suited to the rain-affected conditions at its most recent start.

A post-race veterinary examination of SULTRY GAL (R. Wiggins) revealed no abnormalities.

Race 3: CONTOUR CONSULTING ENGINEERS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP - 1400m

Near the 150m apprentice M. McKenzie (OUR GOLD STASH) dropped his whip.

Race 4: XXXX CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1800m

The start of this race was delayed when TAYSTAR (R. Jamieson) had to be resaddled.

LUDO ROCK (K. Matheson), RUSTY TRAWLER (A. Taylor) and PARTY TRICKS (T. Bell) were slow to begin.

KARAKA STORM (P. Hammersley) overraced during the early stages.

ROSE OF KENTUCKY (L. Appo) overraced badly throughout the event and in the opinion of L. Appo this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s overall performance. Stable representative C. Meagher advised stewards that following today’s performance it would be the intention to start the horse in races over shorter distances in anticipation that with more speed on the mare would perhaps settle better.

PARTY TRICKS was held up for clear running near the 300m, obliging its rider to stop riding and shift back to the inside to obtain clear running.

On return to scale, K. Wharton reported that SERIOUSLY READY, which raced wide throughout, laid in under pressure in the home straight.

L. Appo (ROSE OF KENTUCKY) was reprimanded for using the whip more than 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.

Race 5: REED PROPERTY GROUP CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m

The start of this race was delayed when G. Cooksley (PORT RAIDER) and J. Taylor CHIRICAHUA) had to be reweighed after both horses were presented with the incorrect saddle. After inquiring into the matter, stewards established that when both PORT RAIDER and CHIRICAHUA were being saddled, trainer P. Duff and his staff inadvertently placed the incorrect saddle on both horses. After Mr Duff conferred with both jockeys in the enclosure, it was established that the wrong gear was on each horse. After taking into account all the circumstances, stewards took no action.

The start of this race was further delayed when ON THE BALL (A. Coome), which got its leg over the barrier partition, was removed from the barriers, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

Leaving the 1200m STRADA TITLE (D. Browne) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BILLY GOAT (P. Schmidt), which shifted in. Apprentice P. Schmidt was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

PORT RAIDER overraced when being restrained to obtain cover during the early stages.

CHIRICAHUA overraced throughout the event.

Race 6: RCQ QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1400m

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer T. Crane for the late declaration of P. Hammersley as the rider of KOITAKI.

The start of this race was delayed when WILD TYPE (P. Schmidt) was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that WILD TYPE must officially barrier trial prior to its next start.

COURT’S SUN (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.

Near the 900m LADY ECHELON (D. Browne), when overracing, shifted in and made contact with HILDESHEIM (R. Wiggins) and then shifted out, inconveniencing PASQUINEL (A. Holt), which in turn shifted out causing WILD TYPE to be steadied and shift wider on the track for a short distance.

HARD NUT TO CRACK (G. Killen) overraced during the early and middle stages and at a point near the 700m shifted wider on the track to avoid heels and raced wide from that point onwards.

MAHJONG SMILE (T. Bell) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and was disappointed for a run leaving the 400m, causing its rider to stop riding and shift out across the heels of HARD NUT TO CRACK in order to obtain clear running.

PASQUINEL laid in under pressure in the home straight, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten after passing the 100m.

LITTLE ISH (J. Stanley) finished tailed off and was pulled up quickly after passing the winning post. A post-race veterinary examination of LITTLE ISH failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer M. Mair was at a loss to explain the performance and undertook to provide stewards with the results of veterinary tests he intends to have carried out on the filly. Stewards advised Mr Mair that in their view, in light of the horse’s performance, the filly would be required to officially barrier trial before racing again.

Race 7: HOT 91.1 CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m

As J. Morris was unable to fulfil his engagement on SAMMY LOU due to personal reasons, apprentice P. Schmidt was substituted as the rider of that filly.

MINONDER (L. Tarrant) was slow to begin.

TAHOE CITY (G. Cooksley) jumped away awkwardly, made contact with SAMMY LOU (P. Schmidt) and lost ground.

TUTELA (T. Bell) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with MERCURY JET (A. Coome).

SAMMY LOU and MISS REMY (L. Cassidy) both raced wide throughout.

Race 8: BOLACK PUBLICATIONS CLASS 3 H'CAP- 1200m

THE LAST GENERAL (A. Coome) jumped away awkwardly, made heavy contact with the barrier partition and lost ground.

I’M BUSY (K. Wharton) and DISTILLERY (T. Jeffries) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Approaching the 300m M. Hellyer (DYNAMIC JACK) was obliged to stop riding and shift back to the inside when disappointed for a run between MOUNTED (A. Taylor) and SHOW OF STRENGTH (S. Shield), which shifted in under pressure.

Approaching the 300m I’M BUSY was hampered and forced wider on the track when FRAGEZEICHEN (E. Wilkinson) shifted out under pressure.

Leaving the 300m TRILLIUM (L. Tarrant) shifted out under pressure, causing THE LAST GENERAL to be momentarily inconvenienced.

SHOW OF STRENGTH shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.

A post-race veterinary examination of THE LAST GENERAL revealed no significant findings.
