Race 1: CINDY MACKENZIE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m

OVERRULE (G. Goold), CRACKERJET (D. Browne) and OVER IN SECONDS (M. McKenzie) were all slow into stride.

Near the 500m PETERBONETTI (R. McMahon) shifted around heels to improve and in doing so made contact with OVERRULE, causing both horses to become unbalanced and forcing OVERRULE wider on the track.

OVERRULE lost its off fore plate in running.

Stewards afforded D. Browne the opportunity to comment on the performance of CRACKERJET. He stated that after beginning very awkwardly and making heavy contact with the barrier partition, the gelding was unable to muster any early speed despite being ridden aggressively. He added that in his opinion the poor performance could not be attributed to today’s rain-affected conditions, despite the horse not travelling entirely comfortably. Stable representative M. Leitch advised that in light of the horse’ being fractious in the barriers, the stable would experiment with the use of a barrier blanket, however she could not offer any explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of CRACKERJET revealed no significant findings, and a swab sample was taken.

As D. Browne sustained a foot injury and was stood down from his remaining engagements, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 2: COASTLINE BMW MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m

AL JALILA (K. Wharton) was declared a late scratching at 1.38 pm on veterinary advice that the horse was sore behind. Trainer S. Watters was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for AL JALILA prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on AL JALILA be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

0 cent in the dollar for the Win #2
1 cent in the dollar for place of winner #2
1 cent in the dollar for 2nd place #7
2 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #9

GRAND MARNIER (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

CLIFF’S DREAM (T. Harrison) began awkwardly and then shifted out.

ARCTIC PASSAGE (J. Stanley) jumped in at the start making contact with SHOW COAST (T. Bell).

PATLANISIO (C. Kearney) and ARCTIC PASSAGE raced wide throughout.

Shortly after entering the home straight, ARCTIC PASSAGE had a tendency to lay in under pressure.

SHOW COAST bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer T. Miller was advised that SHOW COAST would be ineligible to start for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

ARCTIC PASSAGE lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 3: RUMBA BEACH RESORT 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m

KISS MY BRASS (E. Wilkinson) was slow into stride.

GUMDALE BOY (M. Crawford), KOKO CLANG (T. Bell) and GOLD FLOW (R. McMahon), which had been slow into stride, were tightened for room between DEB’S SPIRIT (T. Harrison) and KISS MY BRASS, both of which shifted ground at the start.

A short distance after the start KISS MY BRASS commenced to buck and was subsequently eased out of the race and took no further part.

DADSAIDJETTA (K. Wharton) raced wide in the middle stages.

GOLD FLOW was held up for clear running from leaving the 500m and near the 400m was taken out by PER MILLE (M. Hellyer), which shifted out in an attempt to obtain clear running, resulting in GOLD FLOW making heavy contact with DADSAIDJETTA. M. Hellyer was reprimanded for this incident. GOLD FLOW then continued to be held up and when attempting a tight run near the 300m was obliged to steady when disappointed for that run between PER MILLE and KOKO CLANG, which shifted in under pressure. As a result, R. McMahon (GOLD FLOW) was then forced to direct his mount wider on the track and obtained clear running near the 200m. T. Bell (KOKO CLANG) was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Apprentice T. Harrison reported that DEB’S SPIRIT wanted to hang out for the majority of the event.

A post-race veterinary examination of PRIMUS MAXIMUS (R. Wiggins) revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote will be advised that a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to the horse’s next start.

Stewards questioned R. McMahon regarding the tactics adopted on GOLD FLOW from approaching the 600m until entering the home straight. Of particular concern to stewards was his decision to improve to the inside of DADSAIDJETTA rather than position GOLD FLOW behind DADSAIDJETTA, which would have allowed him to shift wider on entering the home straight, thus obtaining clear running immediately. Jockey McMahon stated that he had not anticipated how quickly GOLD FLOW would improve when approaching the 600m, however was still satisfied with his position, adding that he was of the view that DADSAIDJETTA was not travelling well enough at the time to warrant him securing a trailing position behind that horse. He added that he had not anticipated runners to his inside shifting out approaching the 500m and this placed him in an awkward position following KOKO CLANG and to the inside of DADSAIDJETTA. Stewards noted the circumstances and accepted his explanation.

As E. Wilkinson sustained an injury and was stood down from his remaining engagements, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 4: HOTEL MALENY QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1400m

As apprentice J. Johnson was ill, apprentice B. Appo was substituted as the rider of CHURCHILL GEM.

ZAHA DREAM was a late scratching at 11.45 am for veterinary reasons after the horse had sustained injuries in transit to the course. Trainer J. Wehlow was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance before that horse is permitted to race or trial again.

As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, E. Wilkinson was substituted as the rider of GODDESS OF LUCK. R. Wiggins was fined $200. When E. Wilkinson was subsequently unable to fulfil the engagement due to injury sustained in Race 3, apprentice T. Harrison was substituted as the rider of that filly.

GODDESS OF LUCK (T. Harrison) and SOLO SAGA (R. McMahon) were both slow into stride.

In the early stages of the home straight CHOISENEGGER (J. Stanley) laid in when placed under pressure.

Race 5: PELICAN MOTORS SERVICE CENTRE MAIDEN H’CAP - 1600m

As apprentice S. Payne was ill, apprentice M. McKenzie was substituted as the rider of GANGSTA GEORGE.

Connections advised that LAST BET (M. Hellyer) would be ridden back in the field with cover today if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

AMAZING GREY (J. Stanley) was slow to begin.

ENCHANTEE (C. Small) was hampered on jumping away between HEY MURRI (I. Coombes), which shifted out after being hampered by HAYYLER’S HELL (A. Coome), which shifted out, and ZAPPA THE ROCKSTAR (T. Bell), which was hampered by CLAYPOOL (K. Wharton), which shifted in at the start.

In the early stages CLAYPOOL was forced to race wide and overraced until approaching the 1100m where it was permitted to stride forward to obtain the lead approaching the 800m.

LAST BET (M. Hellyer) and LEE HO FOOK (R. McMahon) raced wide throughout and near the 1200m LEE HO FOOK overraced for a short distance and shifted out forcing GANGSTA GEORGE (M. McKenzie), which was also inclined to overrace, wider on the track. Following this, apprentice McKenzie allowed GANGSTA GEORGE to improve into the race and obtain a leading position near the 800m.

Approaching the 200m HAYYLER’S HELL was momentarily inconvenienced when racing to the inside of BY ORDER (T. Harrison), which was taken in by the tiring GANGSTA GEORGE.

Over the concluding stages ENCHANTEE shifted in and had to be steadied from the heels of LEE HO FOOK.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. McKenzie regarding the tactics adopted on GANGSTER GEORGE, particularly his reasons for attempting to position at the tail of the field in the early stages, which was in contrast to the horse’s most recent racing pattern. He explained that he had not been issued specific instructions as to the positioning of the horse, only to have GANGSTER GEORGE travelling comfortably if possible. He added that he had formed the opinion that LEE HO FOOK was a chance in the race and as it had drawn the barrier to his inside, it was his intention to attempt to position GANGSTER GEORGE behind that runner, however, during the early stages when the pace in his opinion was only steady and GANGSTER GEORGE had commenced to overrace and was attempting to hang out, he elected to allow GANGSTA GEORGE to improve into the race to obtain the lead near the 800m. He added that in his opinion the pattern of the race did have a detrimental effect on the overall performance, however he was still disappointed in the gelding’s effort over the final 300m. Trainer P. Rosel confirmed the instructions. A post-race veterinary examination of GANGSTA GEORGE revealed no abnormalities.

M. Hellyer (LAST BET) was reprimanded for failing to weigh in 5th.

K. Wharton (CLAYPOOL) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner.

Race 6: CENTREPOINT APARTMENTS CALOUNDRA CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1600m

Trainer R. Wilson advised that from the good barrier today he anticipates LAUGHING CRUSADER (T. Harrison) racing in a more forward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.

CHINTZ (L. Innes) overraced in the early stages before racing wide throughout.

BUDDY OATH raced wide for the majority of the event.

DANE PRINCESS (M. McKenzie) laid in under pressure in the home straight.

After leaving the 400m BUDDY OATH laid in under pressure and had to be steadied from the heels of CHINTZ.

When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of CHINTZ, apprentice L. Innes reported that despite travelling wide, he was disappointed with the filly’s performance when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and could offer no explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of CHINTZ revealed the filly to have delayed post-race recovery. Stewards will follow up with trainer T. Pike regarding the horse’s recovery from today’s event. Trainer reported in the days following the filly pulled up free from any abnormalities and would continue with current preparation.

When afforded the opportunity to report on the performance of EXCELLENT DANE, apprentice B. Appo stated that after travelling well throughout the gelding failed to respond when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and was very disappointing. Trainer L. Treloar confirmed his disappointment and advised stewards that EXCELLENT DANE would be now sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of EXCELLENT DANE revealed no significant findings.

L. Rolls (HOME TO THE BRIDE) was fined $200 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram overweight.

Race 7: SECUTOR SECURITIES PTY LTD CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1300m

LAMICHI (J. Stanley) was slow into stride.

ROYAL CRUSADER (K. Wharton) laid out under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.

ROUVRAY (R. McMahon) raced greenly in the home straight.
