PEACE TALKS was examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers at the request of the starter and was subsequently cleared to start.
THIRSTY FOR BLOOD (R. Wiggins) and PEACE TALKS (A. Allen) were slow to begin.
THIRSTY FOR BLOOD (R. Wiggins) and REQUIREMENT (R. McMahon), which race wide in the early stages, improved after passing the 1200m when the pace was only steady and took up a forward position closer to the fence.
Near the 800m, FLYING HOME (J. Byrne) and VENTURE ON (G. Goold) shifted out to improve and raced wide from that point onwards.
B. Stewart, rider of FRETON, was fined $100 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
R. Wiggins, rider of THIRSTY FOR BLOOD, was fined $100 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
Apprentice K. Matheson reported that PLATINUM STATE did not feel entirely comfortable in its action after the gelding weakened badly in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of PLATINUM STATE revealed it to be sore in the near foreleg. Connections will be advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for PLATINUM STATE prior to its next race start.
ESCOFFIER lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 2: XXXX F&M H'cap – 1300m
As P. Holmes was to be overweight, R. Wiggins was substituted as the rider of ZAMBONI. Jockey P. Holmes was fined $200.
The start was delayed when ZAMBONI required a replacement girth to be fitted behind the barriers.
Correct weight was delayed to allow L. Cassidy, rider of the 2nd placegetter, COMAHNI, to view the film of the race in the straight to ascertain if he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner KNEELING. Subsequently, L. Cassidy declined to lodge a protest.
PERFECTLY STUNNING (R. McMahon) and COMAHNI (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin.
ZAMBONI (R. Wiggins) lost ground at the start when tightened for room between MISS BRADBURY (M. Cahill) and PRETTY CURY (K. Matheson), which shifted out.
KNEELING (G. Colless) raced wide throughout.
K. Matheson reported that PETTY CURY did not handle today’s heavy track conditions.
PUNCH ON shifted its near fore plate in running.
Race 3: RCQ Bruce McLachlan Class insufficiently clear QTIS 2yo H'cap – 1200m
Trainer D. Heinemann was reprimanded for failing to present HALLSIDE ROSE on course by the prescribed time.
AQUATOR (L. Cassidy) and JET DOWN ON IT (T. Bell) were both slow to begin.
RUSTY COLOURS (M. Speers) was tightened for room at the start between HALLSIDE ROSE (J. Byrne) and NUDE SECRETS (D. Browne), both of which shifted ground.
NUDE SECRETS (D. Browne) overraced in the early stages.
YOU DID WHAT (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.
D. Browne (NUDE SECRETS), and P. Hammesley (FRENCH TARTE) reported that their respective mounts did not handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of NUDE SECRETS and FRENCH TARTE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 4: Summerveld Racing Stables Benchmark 85 H'cap - 1000m
After taking evidence from both L. Cassidy and trainer L. Birchley, Mr Birchley was fined the sum of $100 for incorrectly declaring L. Cassidy as the rider of HUCKLEBERRY DANE.
HLUDOWIG (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 900m, LIGHTFEET LADY (J. Byrne) was inconvenienced when racing to the inside of HUCKLEBERRY DANE (R. Wiggins), which shifted in after being bumped by AGENT BLUE (A. Taylor).
Rounding the home turn, HLUDOWIG attempted to shift out to improve and made contact with LIGHTFEET LADY on a number of occasions. K. Wharton, rider of HLUDOWIG, was advised to exercise greater care.
HLUDOWIG (K. Wharton) had difficulty securing clear running in the early part of the home straight and approaching the 300m shifted to the inside of HUCKLEBERRY DANE (R. Wiggins) and in doing so caused NICKIERA (L. Cassidy) to be steadied.
POMPIDOU (A. Allen) raced wide throughout.
When asked to explain the performance of KELBENJAR, G. Colless stated that the gelding was unable to muster the necessary speed to take up a forward position in the early stages, and then travelled comfortably in the middle stages, however when placed under pressure was inclined to lay in. G. Colless was not entirely dissatisfied with today’s performance, adding that when the pace steadied he was able to lead and dictate the tempo of the race.
Race 5: Wimmers Soft Drinks QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1000m
As G. Gooksley was injured, A. Merritt was substituted as the rider of POCILLO.
Approaching the 500m, POCILLO (A. Merritt) blundered and became unbalanced.
When asked to comment on the performance of TEN GAUGE, G. Colless stated that the colt could not muster early speed and was under pressure to hold a position until the 600m. He added that TEN GAUGE travelled well from that point until approaching the home turn, however when placed under pressure was reluctant to stretch out. A post-race veterinary examination of TEN GAUGE revealed mild lameness in the off foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for TEN GAUGE prior to its next race start.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice K. Matheson regarding the performance of LENNIE’S CHOICE. K. Matheson stated that LENNIE’S CHOICE did not show its customary early speed, and when asked for an effort soon after straightening did not respond to his riding and he was of the opinion that the gelding was not suited to today’s prevailing track conditions. He added that he was not entirely satisfied with the action of LENNIE’S CHOICE when it returned to the mounting enclosure. Trainer K. Schweida was of the opinion that today’s disappointing performance could be attributed to the very heavy track conditions. Stewards will again interview trainer K. Schweida in the coming days to ascertain if any abnormalities have come to light. A post-race veterinary examination of LENNIE’S CHOICE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 6: Yalmba Wines CG&E Class 6 H'cap – 1300m
SHOW OF STRENGTH (S. Shield) was slow to begin.
ALL MY ANGELS (R. McMahon) and FLYING DYNAMITE (G. Killen) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
MY QUILTER (D. Browne) was hampered on jumping away by SONS OF GOD, which jumped away awkwardly.
ALL MY ANGELS (R. McMahon) an SHOW OF STRENGTH (S. Shield) overraced in the early stages.
Near the 400m, SONS OF GOD shifted away from TEN TO ZERO (G. Goold) and made contact with MR ORIENT.
BYMONASHEE (E. Wilkinson) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure over the final 300m.
Approaching the 100m, TEN TO ZERO was inconvenienced when MISHANI WARRIOR (A. Allen) shifted out slightly under pressure.
Trainer R. McCall was questioned after stewards, whose duties were to conduct stable and gear inspections at today’s meeting, identified what appeared to be blood and swelling on the near-side neck of TEN TO ZERO, which was engaged in this event. After taking evidence from Mr McCall and stipendiary steward Mr J. Hackett, it was established that the swelling was the result of a pre-race sample having been taken which caused a haematoma at the gelding’s most recent start at Rockhampton on 20 June. It was also established that TEN TO ZERO had received vitamin treatments earlier in the week and Mr McCall supplied treatment records to stewards. After considering the evidence, stewards were satisfied that TEN TO ZERO had not been treated on race day and permitted the gelding to start.
Race 7: Reed Property Group Glasshouse H'cap – 1400m
PHELAN READY (G. Colless) and TOKAMAK (P. Hammersley) were both slow to begin.
Near the 1200m, TAX EVADER (S. Baster) shifted in and bumped MEET GEORGE (J. Bowditch). A short distance later, MEET GEORGE shifted in and bumped JETSET LAD (R. McMahon). Following this, JETSET LAD and DOUBTFUL JACK (A. Pattillo) bumped on a number of occasions.
Passing the 900m, MEET GEORGE, when overracing, became awkward at the heels of MORNING CAPTAIN (J. Byrne), shifted in and contacted the hind quarters of JETSET LAD. This resulted in MEET GEORGE losing ground. TOKAMAK, which was following and overracing, had to be steadied as a result.
TOKAMAK was unable to secure clear running rounding the home turn, in the early part of the home straight and had to be checked when disappointed for a run between DOUBTFUL JACK and PHELAN READY leaving the 300m.
Over the final 100m, PELLIGRINI (R. Wiggins) commenced to lay out under pressure, resulting in R. Wiggins having to stop riding and straighten near the 50m.
MORNING CAPTAIN (J. Byrne), BELLTONE (D. Browne) and SOMEDAY (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.
When asked to explain the performance of JETSET LAD, R. McMahon reported that after receiving minor interference during the early stages, the gelding did not travel comfortably and failed to respond to his riding over the final 500m, proving disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of JETSET LAD revealed no significant findings.
A post-race veterinary examination of MEET GEORGE revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion on which MEET GEORGE has bled, the gelding will now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
Race 8: Yalumba Claoundra Cup – 2400m
On return to scale a protest was lodged by J. Byrne, rider of the 5th placegetter, DAZZLE US, against SHENZHOU STEEDS being declared 4th, alleging interference near the 150m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, it was established that SHENZHOU did shift out and away from ROTHERA (J. Bowditch) near the 150m and brushed DAZZLE US (J. Byrne). Stewards could not comfortably satisfied that this brush had a material effect on the placings bearing in mind the short half head margin between the relevant horses at the finish, and as such the protest was dismissed and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.
When asked to explain the performance of ANAGOLD, A. Pattillo stated he was not entirely disappointed with the performance, and, in his opinion, the mare is suited to firmer racing conditions, and despite the mare not being entirely comfortable in the going was still responding to his riding in the home straight.
When questioned regarding the performance of HIGH KIN, M. Cahill explained that after being slow to begin, he was forced to race further back in the field than he would have liked, and after improving leaving the 1200m to take up a closer position near the 800m, the mare was then under pressure and proved disappointing over the concluding stages.
When questioned concerning the performance of ZA MAGIC, R. Wiggins stated that the gelding, in his opinion, did not run out a strong 2400m in today’s rain-affected conditions.
A post-race veterinary examination of I GOTTA FEELING, which pulled up quickly after passing the winning post, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities
A post-race veterinary examination of HIGH KIN revealed a laceration to the near fore canon, and also had shifted its off hind plate in running.
Race 9: XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas – 1600m
ELLAWISDOM (B. Stewart) was tightened for room at the start between HEZA JETSETTER (R. Wiggins) and EXIMUS (L. Cassidy), which jumped away awkwardly.
BINGO BOBBY (G. Goold) was slow to begin.
When the pace steadied leaving the 1400m, BINGO BOBBY improved up on to the heels BUAKAW (R. Mcmahon) and had to be restrained, losing ground.
Near the 1300m, BUSHY (J. Byrne) raced ungenerously when pulling hard and shifted in slightly, resulting in GENERAL GROOVE (S. Baster), which was also overracing, having to be steadied when tightened for room. BUAKAW (R. McMahon), which was following, had to be checked from the heels of GENERAL GROOVE, shifted out making contact with HOLLYWOOD BOUND (P. Holmes), which shifted out, taking ELLAWISDOM out across the heels of LUKE’S LUCK (G. Colless).
Near the 1000m, BUAKAW, when overracing, had to be checked from the heels of CASINO CARD (J. Bowditch).
BUSHY, BINGO BOBBY and BUAKAW overraced in the middle stages.
LUKE’S LUCK, LUCKY HUSSLER (D. Browne) and EXIMIUS and HEZA JETSETTER (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.
A post race veterinary examination of GENERAL GROOVE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
