Race 1: Wimmers Soft Drinks Class 1 H'cap – 1800m
WAY OF BEING (A. Holt) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 100m, OVERRULE (G. Goold), which had a tendency to lay in under pressure, improved on to the heels of CRAKERJET (L. Cassidy), causing its rider to stop riding and shift out to avoid heels.
E. Wilkinson was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of MR DODO. He stated that the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages, however when the tempo of the race increased at a point leaving the 800m, he was unable to quicken with the field and proved disappointing in the run to the line. A post race veterinary examination of MR DODO revealed it to be lame off foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance for MR DODO would be required prior to its next race start.
Race 2: Hot 91.1 F&M Class 2 H'cap – 1200m
ABBALAC (G. Goold), after being held up for clear running rounding the home turn, then had difficulty when attempting to secure a clear run between ROCK PAPER SCISSORS (J. Morris) and STRUTTER (J. Johnson), which shifted out under pressure at a point approaching the 300m.
FIRST RELEASE (K. Wharton) had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the performance and handling of BOOMALICIOUS. Of particular concern to stewards was the riding of apprentice Miss T. Tincknell during the early stages where it appeared she had opportunity to press forward in order to secure a forward position closer to the fence, as has been the racing pattern of BOOMALICIOUS. Of further concern to stewards was Miss Tincknell’s riding rounding the home turn, which resulted in BOOMALICIOUS, which had raced wide throughout, shifting wider unnecessarily. Miss Tincknell explained that whilst she had been instructed to ride BOOMALICIOUS on the speed, she felt that a short distance after the start runners to her outside had mustered too much speed for her to be able to have BOOMALICIOUS go forward despite pushing the mare with vigour out of the barriers. She further added that when rounding the home turn her mount received a bump from ROCK PAPER SISSORS, which shifted out in an attempt to secure clear running and this caused her mount to be forced wider on the track. Stewards advised Miss Tincknell that, in their opinion, she had erred in failing to place sufficient pressure on BOOMALICIOUS during the first 200m in an attempt to fulfil her instruction to ride the horse on the speed and that she allowed her mount to shift far too wide when rounding the home turn, which resulted in both ROCK PAPER SCISSORS and ZIGGIES DANCE securing clear running to her inside. In light of today’s performance, stewards ordered Miss Tincknell to attend a session with the Rider Review Panel.
Race 3: Reed Property Group F&M Maiden Plate – 1200m
A warning was issued to the connections of PALACE WHISPERS (J. Stanley), which reared and then blundered out of the gates, almost dislodging its rider and losing considerable ground.
DEB’S SPIRIT (R. McMahon) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with KALANDULA (J. Byrne), tightening that runner onto the hind quarters of DRESSEDFORSUCCESS (J. Johnson).
ALAZANI (E. Wilkinson) raced wide in the early stages.
Passing the 1000m, DRESSEDFORSUCCESS was steadied when overracing to the inside of DEB’S SPIRIT, which shifted in.
Leaving the 800m when the pace slackened, EL JADIDA (L. Tarrant) commenced to overrace and clipped the heels of HELEN OF STRADA (K. Wharton) and lost significant ground. As a consequence, SHARDAY (L. Cassidy), which had overraced in the early stages, and FIREBIRD (R. Johnston-Bell) were both inconvenienced.
MYSTIC MEDUSA (S. Apthorpe) and LITTLE SNEAKY (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.
KALANDULA raced very wide throughout.
When afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of LITTLE SNEAKY, M. Cahill stated that it had been the intention to attempt to ride the mare with cover, however from the wide barrier he was forced to position his mount further back in the field than he would have liked. He added that the mare would benefit from a step up in distance as she was doing her best work over the concluding stages, adding that LITTLE SNEAKY raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.
Race 4: RCQ CG&E Class 2 H'cap – 1200m
EXECUTIVE OFFICER (M. Hellyer) was tightened for room at the start between HOT ICE (J. Hoopert) and MYSTERIOUS MAN (E. Wilkinson), both of which shifted ground.
Passing the 600m, MERCURY JET (L. Cassidy), shifted out to avoid the heels of the tiring EXECUTIVE OFFICER (M. Hellyer), and in doing so made contact with BOLD DICTATOR (A. Taylor) and as a result had to be steadied.
BOLD DICTATOR raced wide throughout.
When asked to comment on the performance of MERCURY JET, L. Cassidy stated that it had been his intention to ride the gelding in a forward position, however after being slow to begin he elected to steady MERCURY JET and take up a position at the tail of the field. He advised he did have some difficulty improving into the race, however despite this he was still of the opinion that the horse did not finish the race off as anticipated.
Race 5: Sky Racing CG&E Maiden Plate – 1200m
REAL DYNAMITE (K. Yoshida) and STAINCROSS (L. Cassidy) were slow to begin.
KING IVAN (A. Butler), which was held up rounding the home turn and then had difficulty securing clear running until a point near the 300m.
Leaving the 300m, A. Taylor, rider of EASYAYE, was obliged to stop riding and shift out to secure clear running after improving onto the heels of FOREGONE (K. Wharton).
FOREGONE and TEASE ME DYLAN (M. Cahill) raced wide for the majority of the race.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on EASYAYE, A. Taylor stated that she had intended to ride in a forward position, as is the horse’s racing pattern, however the gelding was unable to muster sufficient early speed despite her vigorous riding and she was obliged to take up a position in the second half of the field.
K. Yoshida reported that REAL DYNAMITE, after being slow to begin, did not muster any early speed and he elected to take up a position at the tail of the field. He added that as the gelding was doing its best work over the concluding stages, he would recommend to the trainer to step the horse up to longer distances.
Race 6: XXXX Class 5 H'cap – 1400m
HATZIS (L. Cassidy) and STALWART TYCOON (G. Goold) were slow to begin.
When asked to comment on the disappointing performance of ISIS DEVIL, J. Stanley stated that, in his opinion, the gelding did not run out a strong 1400m. Trainer M. Reardon was extremely disappointed with the performance of ISIS DEVIL and as a post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities, he undertook to have blood tests carried out and a further veterinary inspection in the coming days and report the results to stewards.
STIGORI (J. Hoopert) raced wide during the early and middle stages before taking up a position outside the lead approaching the 500m.
DEVON (A. Holt) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and had difficulty securing clear running for a short distance passing the 300m.
STALWART TYCOON and MODEM AL (R. Jamieson) were held up momentarily passing the 300m.
Race 7: Yalumba Wines QTIS 3yo H'cap – 850m
Both PUFF’S GIRL (S. Fawke) and KIRALIM (L. Tarrant) reared as the start was effected and lost ground.
PUFF’S GIRL shifted out to obtain clear running approaching the 100m.
KIRALIM broke down in the near fore sesamoid on pulling up and was euthanased on humane grounds.
