Race 1: WWW.SCTC.COM.AU MAIDEN PLATE – 1600M
Connections advised stewards that it would be the intention to have MISS BRAHMA (G. Colless) ridden just worse than midfield if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
CELTIC AMBITION (D. Gill) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with ELIZABETH’S DREAM (K. Wharton).
HAUSER (D. Browne) was slow to begin.
Passing the 1500m MISS BRAHMA shifted in and made contact with NEW WARRIOR (E. Wilkinson), causing both horses to become unbalanced for some distance approaching the 1400m. This caused NEW WARRIOR to be steadied.
After passing the 300m HAUSER was unable to secure clear running and was disappointed for a run approaching the 200m between BELLHOP KINGDOM (A. Spinks) and STRATEGIC SHADOW (T. Harrison), which was inclined to lay out. Following this, HAUSER continued to be held up and went to the line without being fully tested.
Stewards questioned trainer N. Boyd as to the seemingly improved performance of 2nd placegetter CELTIC AMBITION (D. Gill). Ms Boyd stated that she was of the opinion that the horse’s most recent two starts were not without merit and the gelding had finished its races off well. She added that CELTIC AMBITION was more suited to today’s distance of 1600m and she would now consider stepping the horse up over 1800m and beyond.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on CELTIC AMBITION approaching and rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, D. Gill explained that leaving the 600m, after having followed TALE OF THE DRAGON (R. Wiggins), that rider shifted out and she attempted to secure a position to that horse’s inside, however a short distance later TALE OF THE DRAGON shifted back in and caused her to be held up and as MISS BRAHMA had improved to her outside, she was unable to shift out to secure clear running and she was therefore obliged to remain in this position until approaching the 300m before she was able to secure clear running.
Race 2: SIGNWAVE CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M
GRAND DUKE (E. Wilkinson), after being fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin.
HEBITDA (R. McMahon), which jumped away awkwardly and lost ground, then overraced in the early and middle stages.
CLIFF’S DREAM (T. Harrison), after being held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight, shifted out around the heels of FALVINA (M. Cahill) leaving the 300m and in doing so made contact with MURRAMARANG (B. Appo), forcing that horse wider.
Stewards questioned apprentice A. Fancourt regarding her riding of KING OF JACKS. Of concern to stewards was her failure to position her horse closer to the fence when it appeared she had opportunity to steady shortly after the start and secure a trailing position one off. Of further concern to stewards were her actions in allowing KING OF JACKS to improve when in a wide position, causing her to be three wide approaching the home turn in the lead before shifting unnecessarily wider when passing the 400m. Apprentice Fancourt explained that she had endeavoured to take up a midfield position by restraining from the barriers, however after travelling a short distance, horses from her outside had crossed behind her and improved to her inside, causing her to be caught wide. She then explained that she had attempted to then go forward to try to secure a position outside the lead, however was unable to cross MURRAMARANG, which remained to her inside one off the fence. She further explained that she did not realise she had shifted wider rounding the home turn. Stewards advised Ms Fancourt that in their opinion her ride fell below the standard expected of a provincial apprentice in that she would be expected to be more decisive in her actions, particularly when electing to ride forward in the back straight. She was advised that this ride would be drawn to the attention of the Racing Queensland apprentice training manager.
Race 3: FUJI XEROX BUSINESS CENTRE SUNSHINE COAST F&M CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M
FANCY CLANCY (S. Fawke) and LONDON FAIRY (B. Stewart) made contact on jumping away.
DESTINY’S ANGEL (L. Tarrant), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly afterwards between SPLENDENT CHOICE (J. Byrne), which shifted out, and GOLD BEST (R. McMahon), which shifted in.
UKOK LASS (J. Kokotajlo) made contact with the running rail near the 700m and lost ground as a consequence.
D. Browne reported that LOUDON laid in rounding the home turn and into the home straight and near the 100m had to be restrained from the heels of CAMPIONESSA (M. Cahill), which shifted out under pressure.
K. Wharton reported that on returning to scale SIZZLING SONG felt short in its action in front. A post-race veterinary examination of SIZZLING SONG revealed no abnormalities upon inspection, however trainer A. Williamson was instructed to report to stewards on the progress of SIZZLING SONG in the coming days.
Race 4: GOLDEN BEACH TAVERN C,G&E CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M
GERMAN GENERAL (M. Hellyer) shifted out at the start and made contact with BULLET ONE (B. Stewart).
GERMAN GENERAL and STREET CRIME (L. Tarrant) raced wide throughout.
MAJOR BLOT (K. Wharton) improved on to heels near the 600m and had to be steadied.
When racing greenly near the 300m, GERMAN GENERAL had to be steadied from the heels of MAJOR BLOT after being placed in restricted room between that horse, which was taken out by BULLET ONE, which shifted out, and STREET CRIME, which was taken in by TAHOE CITY (G. Colless), which shifted in under pressure.
M. Cahill reported that TOUGH LOVE was unable to muster any early speed despite his urgings and that he had recommended to connections to step the horse up over more ground.
When asked to comment on the performance of GERMAN GENERAL, M. Hellyer stated that the gelding, when racing wide, raced greenly throughout and had a tendency to run away from other horses and was in his opinion disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of GERMAN GENERAL revealed no significant findings. Trainer D. Heinemann advised stewards that he would monitor the horse’s progress in the coming days and advise of his intentions.
Race 5: SCOTT MCMAHON ELECTRICAL QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M
Connections advised that as ENDLESS PUZZLE (P. Homes) has not been finishing its races off well when ridden in a forward position, the rider would be instructed to go back on the gelding if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
DANZER GIRL (E. Wilkinson) and ENDLESS PUZZLE both jumped away awkwardly.
Near the 900m RED OCEAN (D. McIntosh) commenced to overrace and shifted out abruptly.
NEVER UNDER THREAT (L. Rolls) hung out throughout the event and when rounding the home turn shifted out, making contact with BERCHTESGADEN (R. Wiggins), forcing that horse wider. L. Rolls was then unable to test NEVER UNDER THREAT over the concluding stages. Trainer G. Clunes was advised that NEVER UNDER THREAT must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
Trainer R. Heathcote advised that BERCHTESGADEN, which finished tailed off, would be sent for a spell. Stewards advised Mr Heathcote that BERCHTESGADEN must trial satisfactorily before its next start.
Race 6: AAA FINANCE AND INSURANCE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1300M
After hearing submissions from connections, stewards permitted apprentice L. Tarrant to replace T. Bell on HOT CHILLI MILLY.
D. Browne advised that connections had instructed him to ride BUSHY more positively than it was ridden at its previous start.
CATALONIA (M. Cahill) and HOT CHILLI MILLY (L. Tarrant) were both slow to begin.
HOT CHILLI MILLY raced wide throughout.
After passing the 900m DREAM WITH ME (C. Schmidt) commenced to overrace at the heels of BUSHY and shifted wider and raced wide from that point onwards.
ASTATUS (E. Wilkinson) overraced for a short distance passing the 800m.
SPECIAL LIE (R. McMahon) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and until approaching the 200m.
Approaching the 400m ASTATUS shifted out taking CATALONIA out, which made contact with the hindquarters of HOT CHILLI MILLY, causing that horse to become unbalanced.
When asked to comment on the poor performance of STAY TIL DAWN, apprentice B. Appo stated that he had obtained a favourable position, as instructed, in the lead, however when asked to respond rounding the home turn, the gelding commenced to hang and proved disappointing in the run to the line. He added that the horse appeared agitated prior to the event and felt that this may have had a bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of STAY TIL DAWN revealed that the gelding had pulled up in a distressed state with an extremely elevated heart rate. Trainer L. Birchley will be advised that he will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for STAY TIL DAWN prior to its next start.
Following this event R. McMahon was stood down from his remaining engagement by the Club doctor.
Race 7: SECURE ACCESS IT BM85 H’CAP – 1200M
Connections advised that GENTLE GIANT (E. Wilkinson) would be ridden quietly if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
FRETON (L. Tarrant) and GENTLE GIANT (E. Wilkinson) were both slow to begin.
IMPALA (J. Byrne) overraced in the early and middle stages.
BLAZE TO FORTUNE (B. Appo), which raced wide throughout, was forced wider approaching the 600m when SHEEDY (T. Harrison) shifted out to improve.
J. Byrne, when asked to comment on the performance of IMPALA, stated that despite the horse overracing outside the lead, he was nonetheless disappointed with the performance as over the concluding stages the gelding weakened badly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal post-race recovery rate. Trainer S. Kendrick added that he was disappointed with the horse’s performance and would monitor its post-race progress.
Race 8: TJS SERVICES QLD CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1600M
JERROCITY (M. Hellyer) jumped awkwardly.
BON TEMPS (J. Johnson) and SARTEAGWEN (E. Wilkinson) overraced in the early stages.

SARGENOLLY (D. McIntosh) laid out under pressure in the home straight and over the concluding stages, inconveniencing SARTEAGWEN. D. McIntosh was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
