SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From SCTC 9 March 2014 – Race 5: Stewards today concluded an adjourned inquiry into a fall which occurred near the 500m in this event. After taking evidence from apprentice Brooker (SHELBY) in the presence of apprentice representative R. Mason and taking further evidence from J. Taylor (STAR SPOTTER) and R. McMahon (DON’T LOOK ETHLEN), and also viewing the patrol footage, stewards established that at a point leaving the 600m DON’T LOOK ETHLEN shifted out around the heels of LOVE YOU LIBBY (A. Hearn) to secure clear running when SHELBY, which had commenced to weaken, shifted out to a position which allowed DON’T LOOK ETHLEN to take this run. Stewards were further satisfied that SHELBY had shifted to a three wide position and STAR SPOTTER, which was racing outside at this point, had shifted to a four wide position. Shortly thereafter, contact was made between these two runners when SHELBY shifted out further and this resulted in STAR SPOTTER shifting in slightly, tightening the running of SHELBY, which then shifted in and away across the heels of DON’T LOOK ETHLEN, resulting in that horse clipping the heels of DON’T LOOK ETHLEN and falling. In assessing this incident, stewards were mindful of the racing characteristics of SHELBY, which was weakening badly at the time. Stewards deemed this incident to be an unfortunate racing incident and took no further action.
R. McMahon was fined $200 for failing to make himself available to this inquiry before the first race when he had been directed by stewards to do so.
Race 1: KAWANA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M
ASHGROVIAN was a late scratching at late scratching at 7.45 am for veterinary reasons. Trainer G. Burns was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ASHGROVIAN prior to its next start.
At the request of jockey J. Morris, HERITAGE LISTED underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers and was cleared to race.
Both MISS TRISTY (M. Cahill) and SILVER HEELS (T. Harrison) began awkwardly and lost ground.
MARKRAM (M. Vance) raced wide throughout.
SILVER HEELS was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
MISS TRISTY had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn.
RED SAMBUCA (J. Taylor) laid in under pressure in the home straight.
When asked to comment on the performance of MADAM FRAN, which was below market expectations, S. Galloway reported that the filly did not travel comfortably in today’s rain-affected conditions. He added that he shifted wider near the 600m in an attempt to have MADAM FRAN improve into the race, however shortly thereafter was under heavy pressure and did not respond at all to his riding in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of MADAM FRAN revealed no significant findings, and a swab sample was taken.
Race 2: CHAPS MENSWEAR CALOUNDRA REOPENED MAIDEN H'CAP – 1800M
The track was further downgraded to HEAVY 8 at 1.05 pm.
Both DR KEYS (M. Hellyer) and TRY FOUR (G. Killen) overraced in the early stages before racing wide throughout.
PLAYGROUNDPRINCESS (T. Harrison) raced wide during the early stages before taking up a position outside the lead near the 1000m.
STAR SPOTTER (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Leaving the 500m HERITAGE LISTED (J. Morris), which was hanging out, was steadied to avoid the heels of ZEROMIX (L. Cassidy), which shifted in.
Rounding the home turn DR KEYS hung out.
SEMI WRITTEN (M. Vance) had difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn.
Apprentice T. Wolfgram reported that ZODIAC hung out throughout the event.
Stewards inquired into the performance and handling of DUELONTHEDOWNS. Of concern to stewards was apprentice Johnson’s apparent failure to take up a position trailing ZODIAC (T. Wolfgram) during the early stages where it appeared she had opportunity to do so. Of further concern was when leaving the 1200m Ms Johnson’s failure to place DUELONTHEDOWNS under any pressure to take up a position closer to the main body of the field and when leaving the 800m Ms Johnson failed to improve her position when there appeared an opportunity to do so. Ms Johnson explained that she had been instructed to take up a forward position, however after beginning awkwardly she was unable to do so and elected to take hold and settled at the rear of the field. She added that the horse resented being restrained approaching the 1600m and became awkward when making the first turn. She also added that in the middle stages DUELONTHEDOWNS was travelling comfortably and she did not wish to unsettle the horse at this stage of the event. She explained that when leaving the 800m she attempted to follow ZEROMIX into the race when that horse commenced to improve, however DUELONTHEDOWNS did not run on in the home straight when not comfortable in the rain-affected conditions. She further added that this was the horse’s first start for some time racing in a clockwise direction. Trainer B. Guy confirmed the instructions and also expressed similar concerns to those of the stewards. After considering the explanation and viewing the patrol films, stewards accepted that in the early stages DUELONTHEDOWNS raced somewhat ungenerously and became awkward on the first turn, however advised Ms Johnson that in their opinion she had erred in failing to ride DUELONTHEDOWNS along from the 1200m and again after leaving the 800m so as to improve its position there was an opportunity to do so. However, given the way in which DUELONTHEDOWNS failed to finish the race off, and given Ms Johnson’s status as an apprentice, stewards did not believe her riding of DUELONTHEDOWNS was culpable under the rules of racing. A post-race veterinary examination of DUELONTHEDOWNS revealed no significant findings, and a swab sample was taken.
Race 3: BRIGHTWATER TAVERN CLASS 3 PLATE – 1600M
When questioned, jockey R. Wiggins was unable to explain the disappointing performance of TIRARRI. Stewards will interview trainer L. Birchley at a later date.
Race 4: PFD FOOD SERVICES CLASS 5 H'CAP – 1200M
Trainer L. Treloar was fined $100 for presenting MASHKOOR (M. Cahill) to race without cheekers.
CHEATIN’ CHARLIE (A. Kitson) was extremely slow to begin. Trainer D. Stafford was advised that CHEATIN’ CHARLIE will be required to obtain one barrier certificate prior to its next race start. Mr Stafford advised stewards that it was now his intention to send CHEATIN’ CHARLIE for a spell.
LADY GUEVARA (B. Ainsworth) was slow to begin.
ROYAL LOVER (T. Harrison) raced wide throughout.
For a short distance leaving the 600m SMAKATUS (A. Holt) was obliged to race in restricted room between DEB’S HOPE (T. Bell) and ROYAL LOVER.
In the home straight LADY GUEVARA (B. Ainsworth) had some difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 100m improved on to the heels of ROYAL LOVER and had to be steadied.
DEB’S HOPE (T. Bell) lost its near fore plate in running.
Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 9.
Race 5: CHAPS MENSWEAR CALOUNDRA & MAROOCHYDORE MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M
The start of this race was delayed when ELEGANTLY (K. Matheson), which lost its rider behind the barriers, came into contact with the outside fence and had to be inspected by the veterinary surgeon before taking its place in the field.
RECKIT RALF (J. Morris) and MANHATTAN FLYER (M. Cahill) were slow to begin.
SECRETS TO LOSE (P. Schmidt) and STIFF THUNDER (A. Hearn) raced wide without cover.
Approaching the 800m UMASAGA (L. Cassidy), when racing in restricted room to the inside of JUBRALEA (J. Taylor), became awkward and made contact with the running rail.
At a point leaving the 700m ELEGANTLY became awkward on the heels of STIFF THUNDER.
In the home straight SPIRIT TORQUE (R. McMahon) shifted out under pressure and made contact with UMASAGA on a number of occasions, causing that horse to become unbalanced.
When asked to comment on the performance of KARIEGA, jockey D. Browne stated that from his wide alley he had elected to take hold from the barrier and as the horse had finished its trials off well ridden in this fashion, that was the pre-race plan. He added that throughout the event he was obliged to pressure the horse as it had a tendency to race greenly. He felt that the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would be suited to races over longer distances.
Stewards questioned R. McMahon regarding the tactics adopted on SPIRIT TORQUE in that the horse was ridden forward to sit outside the lead in today’s event, which is in contrast to its racing pattern. Jockey McMahon stated that it had not been his intention to lead, however after beginning well and finding himself caught wide in the early stages, he elected to stride forward to obtain a position closer to the fence.
As E. Wilkinson was stood down by the Club doctor following this event, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 10.
Race 6: TJS SERVICES QLD CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M

WEHRMAN – 1.05 pm, SHEPIKTUS – 1.11 pm, KISS MY BRASS – 2.05 pm
As T. Bell expressed concerns with visibility and did not wish to fulfil his engagement, R. McMahon was substituted as the rider of WINE BY THE GLASS.
MORINGAS MO JO (A. Spinks) was slowly into stride.
Shortly after entering the home straight, when attempting to remove his goggles, jockey Hellyer’s whip became entangled in the rein of ROMAN SECRET for a short distance.
When asked to comment on the performance of WINE BY THE GLASS, R. McMahon stated that the mare blundered on jumping away and when weakening in the home straight became unbalanced and blundered on a number of occasions. He added that the horse at no stage travelled comfortably in the rain-affected conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of WINE BY THE GLASS found the horse to have a slower than normal post-race recovery.
Apprentice T. Harrison (LITTLE ELVIS) was fined $200 for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 7: SCTC RACING EVERY SUNDAY CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M
Apprentice T. Brooker was reprimanded for failing to claim her full allowance on OVERRULE.
FLYING PENNANT (K. Wharton), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start between SUGAR DADDY (L. Tarrant) and MYBOYMAURIE (D. Hayse).
Race 8: ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1200M
As apprentice R. Jamieson was injured, apprentice B. Ainsworth was substituted as the rider of CANNY BE FAMOUS.
Stewards acceded to a request by connections to scratch COMACINA at 4.05 pm due to the HEAVY 10 track.
CANNY BE FAMOUS (B. Ainsworth) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start SIMPLY CHANEL (L. Tarrant) was tightened for room between HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN (K. Wharton) and SINE TIMORE (M. Cahill) both of which shifted ground.
CLIFF’S DREAM (T. Harrison) and SINE TIMORE raced wide without cover.
Near the 500m CANNY BE FAMOUS was steadied when momentarily tightened for room to the inside of SIMPLY CHANEL, which shifted in.
L’UCCELLO ROSSO (J. Orman) shifted out under pressure in the home straight and at a point approaching the 200m inconvenienced FATHER SHADY (D. Missen). Apprentice Orman was advised to exercise more care.
FATHER SHADY (D. Missen) lost its near hind plate in running.
A post-race veterinary examination of SINE TIMORE (M. Cahill) revealed the gelding to have a delayed recovery. Trainer R. Wilson undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in coming days which may have had a bearing on the horse’s performance.
A post-race veterinary examination of HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN (K. Wharton) revealed no significant findings.
