Subject to any further submissions from trainer S. Kendrick, a $200 fine would be imposed for failing to declare P. Holmes as the rider of FEELIN’ THE HEAT.
FEELIN’ THE HEAT (P. Homes) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start, REAL STING (A. Holt) was steadied when tightened for room between KEEP ON ROCKING (N. Tomizawa) and PRINCE TUDOR (A. Spinks), which shifted out.
N. Tomizawa, rider of KEEP ON ROCKING, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that leaving the 1200m he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of LOST THIEF (M. Vance), forcing that horse in on to the running rail and causing it to be checked. As a result of this incident, FEELIN’ THE HEAT, which was following, had to be steadied and shifted out, inconveniencing both WICKED TEMPTATION (A. Best) and CANONGATE (D. Missen). N. Tomizawa was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight 15 June and to expire at midnight, 26 June.
D. Missen, rider of CANONGATE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 800m he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of GOWAN BRAE (L. Tarrant), which was taken in onto the running line of REAL STING (A. Holt), causing that horse to be checked. D. Missen was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 21 June, and to expire at midnight, 2 July.
REAL STING (A. Holt) had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
WICKED TEMPTATION (A. Best) laid in under pressure in the home straight and leaving the 100m inconvenienced LOST THIEF, which resulted in M. Vance having to stop riding LOST THIEF and shift out across the heels of WICKED TEMPTATION. A. Best, rider of WICKET TEMPTATION, was advised to exercise more care.
K. Yoshida reported to stewards he had been advised by connections that NOT CLOSE would now be sent for a spell following this run.
Race 2: Telstra Business Centre Class 1 H'cap – 1600m
The start of this race was delayed when GREYLAMI proved difficult to load.
On jumping GREYLAMI (A. Fancourt) was inconvenienced by ROYAL LAKE (A. Best), which shifted out.
Near the 1200m, CROCKETT’S MISTAKE (N. Tomizawa) had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of HOT AUGUSTA (D. Missen), which laid in.
STRATEGIC SHADOW (K. Wharton) raced wide when being ridden forward during the early stages.
When asked to comment on the performance of CROCKETT’S MISTAKE, N. Tomizawa stated that after being caught wide early he was able to obtain a trailing position worse than midfield and felt that the horse travelled well until asked for an effort at the top of the straight, however his mount failed to respond to his riding. Jockey Tomizawa added that he could offer no further explanation for the performance other than it seemed to race a little fresh today, causing the horse to overrace in the early stages. A post race veterinary examination of CROCKETT’S MISTAKE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and a swab sample was taken. Trainer E. Ropiha advised he was disappointed with the performance and was of the view that the horse was under pressure in the middle stages and would monitor its progress in the coming days, however at this stage planned to continue with the current preparation.
Stewards asked D. Missen to comment on the performance of HOT AUGUSTA. He started that throughout the event the filly raced greenly, at times laying in and also laying out. He felt this could be attributed to HOT AUGUSTA having its first start racing in this direction. D. Missen added that he was forced to pressure his mount after leaving the 700m in order to hold its position and despite this the horse did finish the race off moderately. He was of the view that the filly would take benefit from the experience.
Race 3: Battery Wise Benchmark 75 H'cap – 1400m
WHAT A GAL (P. Homes) was slow to begin.
KID TYCOON (S. Bogenhuber) began awkwardly.
D. Missen reported that VO HEART overraced for a short distance leaving the 1000m.
Race 4: Aqua Blue Plumbing Maiden Plate – 1400m
Due to a miscommunication, M. Vance was declared the rider of NINE TIMES. A. Best was subsequently substituted as the rider of that horse.
Approaching the 1300m, RED ‘N’ BROWN (L. Tarrant) was steadied when tightened for room between NEXT ERA (G. Goold) and NINE TIMES (A. Best), which shifted out.
THE FENCER (D. Missen) overraced for a short distance passing the 800m.
Stewards inquired into the tactics and handling of NEXT ERA. Of concern to stewards was apprentice G. Goold’s actions after having obtained clear running outside the heels of SMARTY VANCE (K. Wharton) when approaching the 300m and his apparent lack of vigour until approaching the 100m. Apprentice Goold explained that he had been instructed to ride the horse quietly at the tail of the field due to having drawn an awkward alley. He also had been advised that as the horse had jumped out and trialled on rain affected tracks and had a tendency to race awkwardly he should bear this in mind when riding the horse throughout the event. He stated when he improved rounding the home turn to the inside of PUNTERS JOURNEY he was held up at the heels of SMARTY VANCE until approaching the 300m. He explained that when obtaining clear running at that point NEXT ERA became awkward and changed stride on a number of occasions. G. Goold stated that this coupled with his instructions that the horse may not handle the rain affected conditions he felt that he should give the gelding time to balance up before placing pressure on the horse. He felt that this took about 50 metres . The instructions were confirmed by trainer G. Duncan who also indicated that he was satisfied with apprentice Goold’s riding at this point of the race. Stewards after considering the evidence did accept that NEXT ERA changed stride on 2 occasions in close succession after leaving the 300m, however appeared to race tractably following this point. Stewards were not satisfied that apprentice Goold’s riding from that point until approaching the 100m was acceptable, however given his riding instructions, the track conditions and apprentice Goold’s status as an apprentice, afforded him the benefit of the doubt as to whether his actions were reasonable in the circumstances. Trainer G. Duncan was advised that when NEXT ERA has its next start he would be required to inform stewards of the tactics prior to starting, and also that he would be expected to justify his reasons if he intended starting the horse on a rain affected surface in the near future.
Race 5: Target Training Class 2 H'cap – 1000m
Near the 700m, SIZZLING SONG (S. Bogenhuber) was restrained from the heels of CHRYSIN (A. Best) when that horse slackened the pace.
FATHER SHADY (L. Tarrant) was badly held up over the final 200m and was forced to check when improving into a tight run to the inside of SIZZLING SONG (S. Bogenhuber) near the 100m and went to the line without being fully tested.
INFAMOUS (A. Spinks) was held up for clear running at the heels of the weakening SEPT DE COEURS (K. Wharton) from the 150m until leaving the 100m.
When questioned, A. Butler stated that he was instructed to ride TWINZIG in a rearward position and he following those instructions, however advised that in the early and middle stated the horse never travelled well in the heavy track conditions and, in his opinion, appeared to badly resent the kick back.
Race 6: Samios Maiden H'cap – 1000m
Jockey B. El-Issa was fined $100 for failing to fulfil his engagement on SCARLET JANE by the prescribed time.
GAYLEN (A. Fancourt), which was standing very awkwardly, then jumped awkwardly and threw its head about.
TONGUE OF FIRE (K. Wharton) and JERRYVIL (A. Best) were slow to begin.
A. Spinks reported that SCARLET JANE slipped on jumping away.
WILLOYD (G. Goold) and ORATRY (A. Butler) both raced wide without cover.
A. Best reported that JERRYVIL raced greenly throughout the event.
Stewards asked trainer Mrs C. Hickey to explain the seemingly improved performance of the winner, SMALL TALK. She stated that at the horse’s first start it drew poorly and as a result was very wide on the track and this had a detrimental effect on the overall performance. She advised since this start she has given the horse a further long jumpout and, in her view, the filly took benefit from that experience and with the more favourable barrier draw in today’s event was able to secure a position on the fence in the lead and this resulted in tonight’s forward showing. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered.
A. Butler advised that from the wide draw ORATRY travelled not better than 4 wide throughout the race and, in his opinion, the horse failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. A post race veterinary examination of ORATRy revealed no abnormality.
WILLOYD was examined by the veterinary surgeon following the race and found to be making an abnormal respiratory. Trainer W. Thornton was advised that the results of an endoscopic examination must be provided to stewards prior to its next race start.
Race 7: Prodigy Promotions Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
RED CENT (A. Holt) was slow to begin.
