Race 4: Paslode Maiden Plate – 1600m

OTHER WAY – Jockey A. Taylor was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on her mount. Of particular concern was the reason for continuing forward outside the lead passing the 800m when a strong pace had already been set. Jockey Taylor advised she was attempting to fulfil instructions of which she had been told if her mount was not able to lead she would be expected to make a run from the 800m as the gelding can maintain a long run and does not possess a quick sprint. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 5: Bosch Power Tools Class 1 H'cap – 1800m

STAR FORMATION – Slow to begin. Raced greenly when under pressure in the home straight.

THOMAS THE WELSH – Stewards questioned G. Goold regarding the tactics adopted on the horse, which led by a significant margin in the middle stages. He indicated from the wide alley he endeavoured to ride the horse forward and obtain a position closer to the fence, however when he attempted to settle his mount after passing the 1600m, the horse raced keenly and set a faster tempo than he would have liked. He felt this could be attributed to the horse being fresh as it was stepping up from 1200m at its most recent start. Stewards noted the circumstances and accepted the explanation.

BELLA FORTUNA – Shifted wider passing the 1200m and ridden forward to a position closer to the lead near the 800m.

GIDS – Steadied approaching the 1000m when tightened for room.

BALLINGALL BOY – Shifted out near the 800m, forcing another runner wider on the track. Steadied near the 400m, when inconvenienced by another runner. Apprentice R. Jamieson reported her mount raced keenly with the addition of blinkers today and raced ungenerously for most of the event. A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which weakened over the final 300m failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

HENNY’S HERO - Shifted out to obtain clear running near the 400m, inconveniencing another runner. When asked to comment on the performance, G. Killen indicated that from the wide alley he was obliged to pressure the horse in the early stages to obtain a forward position, and he was of the opinion this had an effect on the overall performance. He was also of the view that today’s race was of a higher standard than the horse’s 2 previous starts.

OVERRULE – Had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, and was obliged to alter course approaching the 350m.

AL ALMIGHTY – Restrained from heels near the 600m.

JESSELTON – Raced wide without cover. Lost its near fore plate in running.

ZIPPITY ZOU – Jockey C. Munce was questioned regarding the performance and his riding of the mare over the final 150m. He indicated that from the 200m his mount commenced to weaken and for this reason he stopped applying pressure to his mount. He added that over the final stages the mare made an abnormal respiratory noise. Stewards were of the view that his actions had no material effect on the placings in the race, however advised him that he would be expected in similar circumstances to ride his mounts out at least in a hands and heels fashion. Trainer B. Herne indicated that the mare had been in an agitated state throughout the day, and in light of today’s performance would now be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
