TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SATURDAY 12/07/03


STEWARDS PANEL: P. COOPER (CHAIRMAN), W. BETHEL, C. BIRD, R. SMITH and M. STEHBENS (CADET).


WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD

RACE 1: QTIS 2-YEAR-OLD PLATE - ABOUT 1200 METRES - 8 STARTERS
BALLROOM JACK was a late withdrawal, at 11.30 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. As betting had not commenced, no alterations to betting were required.
Jockey R. Bellert, the rider of JUST JINX, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 950 metres, inconveniencing MISS A STEP (S. Campton).
Jockey S. Simon, the rider of KOBE BAY, was admonished for allowing his mount to shift inwards at approximately the 700 metres, resulting in CHARDWANA (C. Murphy) being taken wider.

RACE 2: MAIDEN HANDICAP - ABOUT 1400 METRES - 14 STARTERS
As the start was effected BENTLEY DREAM (K. Mahoney) jumped outwards, taking BOLD TACTICS (D. Crossland) out onto KAYO CURLEY (P. Cullen), which in turn shifted out onto IRGUN COWBOY (A. Molino).
Apprentice L. Abbott (REAL FRISKY) confirmed the opinion of the stewards that approaching the 700 metres her mount became unbalanced and slipped behind.
At approximately the 250 metres IRGUN COWBOY (A. Molino) shifted in, crowding GHOSTLY TALE (A. Merritt), which was taken in onto THE LITTLE DRILLER, which was checked and lost its position. Stewards acknowledged that A. Molino had stopped riding IRGUN COWBOY and made every effort to straighten his mount. In the circumstances no further action was taken.

RACE 3: CLASS QTIS 3-YEAR-OLD CLASS 6 HANDICAP - ABOUT 1400 METRES --13 STARTERS
CARAT OF GOLD (J.Stopps) jumped outwards as the start was effected and made contact with COUNTY ROADS (S.Watkin).

RACE 4: MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1000 METRES
As the start was effected JESSIE (Apprentice L. Abbott) jumped inwards and made contact with SOUPLESSE (I.Toward).
From the home turn to the finish STORMY BLUE (S. Simon) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.


RACE 5: CLASS 3 HANDICAP - ABOUT 1630 METRES - 14 STARTERS
In the early and middle stages EDUCATOR (S. Watkin) overraced and would not settle. This resulted in TOOBANNA (I. Toward) being hampered at about the 800 metres. After the race trainer Mr R. McLachlan reported that EDUCATOR had returned to the enclosure with lacerations to the off hind leg.
At approximately the 100 metres EXPRESSO BAY (P. Cullen) shifted in and inconvenienced GERTRUDIS (J. Stopps).

RACE 6: WINTER CUP OPEN HANDICAP - ABOUT 2100 METRES - 12 STARTERS
On the turn out of the straight for the first time FOREST PRIDE (S. Campton) laid out and had to be restrained to avoid the heels of BETTER STILL (S. Simon).
At about the 450 metres METALLIC (S. Watkin) shifted in, resulting in FOREST PRIDE (S. Campton) being dictated inwards onto BETTER STILL (S. Simon). S. Simon was given the benefit of a grave doubt as to whether he was completely responsible for the incident.

RACE 7: WEIGHT-FOR-AGE - ABOUT 1200 METRES -- 12 STARTERS
As D. Lloyd was indisposed, D. Simmons was substituted as the rider of JAZZAD.
TYPHOON BARNEY was slow to get into stride.
From the 600 metres to the home turn MONARBER (G. Kliese) laid out.

RACE 8: CLASS 2 HANDICAP - ABOUT 1200 METRES - 12 STARTERS
As the start was effected DANZADANE (A. Cox) was tightened for room between CONFIDENCE BUILDER (R. Mules), which shifted out and MIDNIGHT GAMBLER (G. Kliese), which shifted in.
A. Cox (DANZADANE) reported that his mount laid in for the entire journey.
