RAIL IN TRUE POSITION

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

When D. Crossland was to be overweight the following substitutions were made: Race 1, as no other suitable rider was available who was prepared to fulfil the engagement, stewards permitted Apprentice K. Penrose to be substituted as the rider of SEEYA; Race 2, E. Kowald to ride NUGUN; Race 4, J. Stopps to ride JESSIE. D. Crossland was fined $300 under A.R. 120(b).

RACE 1: MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1400 Metres – 15 Starters

Trainer R. Rix was fined $50 under L.R. 70(1) for failing to declare I. Toward as the rider of VICTORY ALLEY by the prescribed time.

GIDDYUPADINGDONG (S. Shield) and BEAUSUMO (M. Carson) were slow to begin.

In the early and middle stages BEAUSUMO (M. Carson) was obliged to race very wide.

Approaching the 1100 metres GOD’S WORD (G. Kliese) got its head up when overracing and had to be steadied off the heels of another runner.

Jockey I. Toward, the rider of VICTORY ALLEY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (A.R. 137(a)), in that near the 1000 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of JAZZ LEGEND (M. Elliott), which was taken in and took the running of LOCAL BLOKE (D. Evans), which was checked and lost its position. I. Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight tonight, 28th August 2004, up to and including 7th September 2004 (4 NQ meetings).

Approaching the 250 metres GET SALTY (Apprentice L. Attard) was initially disappointed for a run on the inside of VAMOOSE (W. Cullen), and then was shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered CHARLEE BUKIT (A. Cox), which was taken wider. Apprentice Attard was severely admonished.

RACE 2: CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1300 Metres – 16 Starters

Due to a misunderstanding J. Stopps was incorrectly notified as the rider of OVER THE LINE. The explanation tendered by J. Stopps was accepted, and Apprentice K. Penrose was substituted as the rider of OVER THE LINE.

CATALINA CROSSING (D. Evans) shifted out at the start and bumped EPONA’S BONUS (W. Cullen).

CHECK (G. Kliese) hung out throughout the event.

Approaching the 1000 metres THE FIND (J. Stopps), which was overracing, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CHECK (G. Kliese).

Rounding the home turn CHAKA MAKAKA (I. Toward) ran extremely wide.

On the home turn NUGUN (E. Kowald) improved up onto the heels of SEXY SUZE (P. Cullen) and knuckled badly. JOE’S FURY (A. Cox), which was following, had to be steadied in consequence.

Following the declaration of correct weight the Official Judges advised that they had incorrectly semaphored LOCHSCENE (M. Cullen) as having placed 4th and MANHATTAN EAGLE (App. L. Attard) having placed 5th, when upon further perusal the placings should have been MANHATTAN EAGLE 4th and LOCHSCENE 5th. Stewards informed the Club of the error and advised that they were unable to amend the Judges’ placings as correct weight had been notified. Subsequently they interviewed Mr J. Dixon, the trainer of MANHATTAN EAGLE, the Judge Mr P. McLeod, and Mr J. Heddo, Secretary of Townsville Turf Club, representing the North Queensland Amateur Turf Club. Mr Heddo informed stewards that it had been agreed that the Club would reimburse Mr Dixon the value of the 4th prize money.

RACE 3: CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1000 Metres - 15 Starters

At the start MR. DONATELLO (App. L. Attard) shifted in and bumped BRAVE PROMISE (G. Kliese).

BALINAQ (D. Evans) began awkwardly.

Rounding the home turn VITEGIC (App. K. Penrose) shifted out slightly around the heels of ANOTHER IRGUN (E. Kowald) and brushed ANOTHER TWINKLE (I. Toward), which in turn shifted out onto POSTUREPEDIC (J. Felix), which was taken out onto MR. DONATELLO (App. L. Attard), which had to be checked.

Jockey I. Toward, the rider of ANOTHER TWINKLE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (A.R. 137(a)), in that near the 300 metres he permitted his mount to shift out and take the rightful running of POSTUREPEDIC (J. Felix), which had to be checked and lost its position. I. Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight tonight, 28th August 2004, up to and including 7th September 2004, the suspension to be served concurrently with that imposed by the stewards in Race 1 today (4 NQ meetings). J. Felix was warned about the quality of the evidence he gave during the inquiry (A.R. 175(g)).

Over the concluding stages BRAVE PROMISE (G. Kliese) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

RACE 4: SPECIAL CONDITIONS HANDICAP - 1000 Metres - 11 Starters

Trainer Ms L. Manzelmann was fined $50 under A.R. 64(1) for nominating MONTCHANIN for this race, for which it was ineligible.

STONEY PLANET (J. Felix) began awkwardly.

After beginning awkwardly NOOPY (D. Evans) raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Near the 300 metres MONGKE (I. Toward) had to be restrained and lost ground when crowded for room between PHONDIL WAY (R. Seymour), which shifted out, and MAGLI (P. Cullen), which shifted in. Stewards could not be satisfied that any individual rider was responsible for the incident. However, R. Seymour was severely reprimanded and P. Cullen reprimanded for permitting their mounts to shift ground.

Over the concluding stages STONEY PLANET (J. Felix) was unable to obtain clear running.

RACE 5: AMATEUR CUP HANDICAP - 1960 Metres - 15 Starters

QUESTWIN (D. Evans) was slow to begin.

When the pace slackened on the turn after the winning post the first time, BETHEL (I. Toward) ran up onto the heels of BARKER BOY (M. Cullen) and had to be checked.

At about the 200 metres GAZZAM (S. Shield) was momentarily held up for a run.

RACE 6: CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1200 Metres -_15 Starters

Shortly after the start HURRICANE VIC (App. K. Penrose) shifted in and bumped THE SPUR.

When the pace steadied approaching the 1000 metres SILVER NATIVE (W. Cullen) had to be steadied off the heels of LOST PRINCE (I. Toward).

In the early and middle stages KELSO REEF (M. Cullen) was obliged to race wide.

Approaching the 800 metres MACNAMARA’S BAND (D. Evans) had to be steadied off heels.

CANVASS (P. Cullen) broke down in the off foreleg near the 700 metres. The gelding was euthanased by the Club’s veterinary surgeon.

Leaving the 400 metres THE SPUR (E. Kowald) improved up onto the heels of ARCH TRIUMPH (S. Shield), struck that horse’s heels and knuckled.
