STEWARDS PANEL: Mr W. BIRCH (CHAIRMAN), Mr B. Turner, Mr W. Bethel, Mr R. Smith

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: - GOOD

RAIL: OUT 3 METRES FROM 1000 METRES TO WINNING POST

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As R. Mules was indisposed the following substitutions were permitted: Race 3, J. Stopps to ride ZEDOLLARS; Race 4, A. Cox to ride BE YOUR BEST.

Race 4: As D. Simmons was indisposed permission was given for to be substituted as the rider of VICTORY ALLEY.

RACE 1: QTIS 3-YEAR-OLD CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 Metres – 6 Starters

The start was delayed when the Ambulance was late arriving on course.

RIVER LADY (D. Green) jumped in at the start and made heavy contact with EMMABEE (J. Stopps).

Leaving the 850 metres RIVER LADY (D. Green) had to be steadied off the heels of NORTHERN COMMANDER (M. Bennett), which shifted in slightly.

After the 600 metres AULD FRIEND (F. Edwards) commenced to hang out and continued to do so until entering the home straight.

RACE 2: CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1000 Metres – 9 Starters

CALL THE SHOT (G. Kliese) refused to proceed to the starting gates and was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 2.02 p.m. Subsequently stewards ordered that all bets made on CALL THE SHOT be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of CALL THE SHOT be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: win 4¢, place 5¢. Trainer Ms O. Cairns was advised that CALL THE SHOT must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.

For a short distance approaching the 200 metres SILVER NATIVE (W. Cullen) raced in restricted room.

RACE 3: CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1000 Metres - 13 Starters

PENTECOST (J. Felix) was slow to begin.

MANITO (M. Elliott) knuckled on jumping.

CHANGE GEARS (I. Toward) shifted out at the start and made contact with the hindquarters of KINGLEA (F. Edwards).

In the early and middle stages EROTICA (P. Cullen) and FULL BALE (A. Cox) raced wide.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight GEAR CHANGE (I. Toward) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

When placed under pressure in the straight MANITO (M. Elliott) raced erratically.

RACE 4: MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1300 Metres - 14 Starters

MAJESTIC NATIVE was declared a late scratching at 1:05pm by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice when that gelding was found to be lame in the off hind leg.

BREE EN ZEE (S. Shield), BEDIVERE (W. Kenning), WILL TO ENDURE (D. Green) and POWER LION (J. P. Stanley) were all slow to begin.

When the gates opened SIR ARCHIE (J. Felix) jumped in the air and lost ground.

Near the 850 metres SEAVIEW LASS (M. Elliott), which had been racing erratically, shifted out abruptly, resulting in BREE EN ZEE (S. Shield) having to shift out to avoid that horse’s heels. As a consequence BEDIVERE (W. Kenning), which was racing to the outside of BREE EN ZEE, was carried very wide on the track.

When questioned regarding the seemingly poor performance of CASTLE TOWERS Jockey G. Kliese explained that the gelding travelled well in the early stages, however when placed under pressure leaving the 500 metres failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion was disappointing. Trainer Mr G. Hughes stated that CASTLE TOWERS had worked well in the lead-up to today’s event. He was unable to explain the horse’s performance other than that it was having only its second start today. The explanations tendered by Jockey Kliese and Mr Hughes were noted. Mr Hughes was fined $50 under A.R. 117(3) for removing CASTLE TOWERS from the course within half an hour of the finish of the race. Mr Hughes was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required before CASTLE TOWERS will be permitted to race again.

RACE 5: HANDICAP - 1630 Metres - 8 Starters

On jumping GAZZAM (S. Shield) shifted out, taking BETTER STILL (F. Edwards) out onto OVERSEAS (P. Cullen).

In the early and middle stages SINOWIN (D. Crossland) overraced.

In the early stages OVERSEAS (P. Cullen) was obliged to race wide on the track.

Jockey P. Cullen (OVERSEAS) was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in leaving the 50 metres, resulting in GAZZAM (S Shield) having to be steadied when taken in onto STRIDERITE (J Stanley)

RACE 6: CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1630 Metres -_10 Starters

HURRICANE VIC (F. Edwards) shifted out at the start and crowded RUNYON BEAUTY (Apprentice R. McMahon) out onto OUR UNISON (D. Green).

Rounding the turn near the 1400 metres SOCIETY ROLL (J. P. Stanley) raced ungenerously and got its head up.

In the early stages KOOL KALI (M. Elliott) overraced.

Approaching the 200 metres D. Green, the rider of OUR UNISON, had his whip accidentally struck from his grasp by the whip of J. P. Stanley, the rider of SOCIETY ROLL.

RACE 7: CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1630 Metres - 14 Starters

Due to a clerical error W. Cullen was inadvertently shown instead of P. Cullen as the rider of REAL ASSET.

In the early stages REAL ASSET (P. Cullen) overraced and was obliged to race wide from a point leaving the 700 metres.

VATANA (G. Kliese) raced wide throughout.

Near the 800 metres GET SALTY (Apprentice R. McMahon) shifted in and brushed the running rail.

Jockey F. Edwards, the rider of GOOD OLD DAYS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that leaving the 400 metres he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of GET SALTY (Apprentice R. McMahon), which clipped the heels of GOOD OLD DAYS and blundered. F. Edwards was suspended from riding in races for a period of 3 North Queensland meetings to commence at midnight on Saturday, 2nd October 2004, up to and including 12th October 2004.

RACE 8: CLASS 3 PLATE - 1200 Metres - 14 Starters

On jumping CRAIGLEA BART (J. Stopps) shifted out and brushed OUR MATISSE (P. Cullen).

Shortly after the start SON OF ZENA (A. Cox) had to be restrained off the heels of ROMAN CHARIOT (M. Carson) which shifted out slightly.

REJECTED (S. Shield) was held up and unable to obtain clear running until leaving the 200 metres.

Jockey A. Cox (SON OF ZENA) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the winning post.

Following the race I. Toward (SPY’S ECLIPSE) reported that the gelding was inclined to lay out throughout the event and he was obliged to race very wide. This also resulted in jockey I Toward being unable to fully test his mount in the straight.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of TRIP TO MANILA (D. Crossland) as compared to its 11th out of 11 placing at Cairns on 10th September 2004, trainer Mr R. Chillemi stated that the gelding had failed to handle the track at Cairns and was reluctant to stretch out on that occasion. He added that TRIP TO MANILA had been supported at Cairns and again today. The explanation was noted.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
