Race 1: Ewan in September Class 5 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st - ESDENE’S SEQUEL 2nd - MAGIC OWN 3rd - TEDDY CHEVAL 4th - TRICKY DICKY
Over the concluding stages ESDENE’S SEQUEL (W. Kenning) had a tendency to lay out, causing MAGIC OWL (J. P. Stanley) to be shifted wider in consequence.
On returning to scale it was noted that JAZZY LANDING (G. Cullen) had bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which the mare had bled, it was barred from competing at licensed meetings for three months under A.R. 53A.
Race 2: Livestock Nutrition Technologies QTIS 3-Year-Old Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - ON THE FAIRWAY 2nd - EMMBOWEN 3rd WHATSATWATONVILLE 4th - ABOVE THE HORIZON
DEJA SHAMON (R. Barone) was slow to begin.
CLASSY SONG (A. Cox) began awkwardly, shifted out and lost ground.
When asked to explain the poor performance of DESERT NORTH, J. P. Stanley stated that the gelding began well but then dropped the bit and commenced to lose ground. He said that in the early and middle stages, despite his efforts, DESERT NORTH gave the impression that it did not want to race. He stated, however, that in the straight when he was able to move the horse wider and away from other runners and strike it with the whip, DESERT NORTH got to the line fairly. He added that he had recommended to trainer Mr R. Baker that he experiment with blinkers on the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination of DESERT NORTH
Race 3: Schmidts Livestock Transport Class 2 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - REAL ASSET 2nd - OBI WAN 3rd - LINK HOGTHROB 4th -
KILLAIN
Shortly after the start OBI WAN (Apprentice R. Plumb) shifted in and momentarily crowded MENSA PRINCE (D. Green), which was steadied. Apprentice Plumb was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Approaching the home turn LINK HOGTHROB (A. Patillo) was held up for a short distance on the inside of LIGHTS (I. Toward).
Over the final stages MENSA PRINCE (D. Green), which was under pressure and weakening, was steadied to avoid the heels of SHE’S VICTORIOUS (R. Barone), which shifted out under pressure.
On returning to scale Jockey A. Patillo reported that LINK HOGTHROB got its tongue over the bit in the early stages and raced ungenerously throughout. Trainer Mr D. Crouch informed stewards that the tongue tie had been removed from the gelding’s gear today and in his opinion this may have accounted for the horse’s performance. He sought permission to experiment by re-applying the tongue tie prior to the horse's next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of LINK HOGTHROB did not reveal any abnormality.
Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded from dead to good.
Race 4: Olsson Industries Class 3 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - SCHOONER OR LATER 2nd - REJECTED 3rd - BLEIGHSBOY 4th - STALKING SHADOWS
CALAIS BOUND sustained injuries in the float en route to the course and was a late withdrawal by order of the stewards at 9.25 a.m. Trainer Mr D. Crouch was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to CALAIS BOUND being permitted to race again.
STALKING SHADOWS (D. Crossland) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start REJECTED (J. P. Stanley) was steadied away from the heels of GRANTON (P. Cullen), which was taken in by POSTUREPEDIC (A. Cox), which had a tendency to shift in away from MOVE EASY (Apprentice R. Plumb).
Near the 700 metres SCHOONER OR LATER (R. Barone) , which was overracing, became awkward on the heels of FIELD COMMISSION (G. Cullen), which shifted out and bumped GRANTON (P. Cullen).
At about the 600 metres FIELD COMMISSION (G. Cullen) laid out and became awkwardly placed on the heels of MOVE EASY (Apprentice R. Plumb), which was laying in.
Approaching and rounding the home turn MOVE EASY (Apprentice R. Plumb) had a tendency to hang in and proved difficult for Apprentice Plumb to ride. A post-race veterinary examination of MOVE EASY revealed that the mare had sustained lacerations to the offside hind leg.
Jockey G. Cullen, the rider of FIELD COMMISSION, was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip (A.R. 137A).
Race 5: W. Titley & Co. Charters Towers Maiden Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - DAREDEVIL 2nd - TIME SWITCH 3rd - RAPID ILLUSION 4th -
Jockey W. Kenning was dislodged from JONQUILS on the way to the barriers and sustained an injury to his left cheekbone. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of JONQUILS at 3.27 p.m. After being placed in the barriers TAVERN TART broke through and dislodged its rider, Apprentice R. Plumb. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of TAVERN TART at 3.34 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on JONQUILS and TAVERN TART be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of JONQUILS be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: win 10¢, place 10¢ and that there be no deductions for bets made prior to the withdrawal of TAVERN TART. Trainer Mr R. Tapolias was informed that TAVERN TART must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official jump-out before being permitted to race again. A post-race veterinary examination of TAVERN TART revealed that the mare had sustained lacerations to both front and hind legs. Trainer J. Bell was advised that a warning had been placed on the race-day manners of JONQUILS.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey D. Evans, the rider of THE TROUBLE IS, to view the photo finish.
HERANDO (Apprentice R. McMahon) began awkwardly and lost ground.
At the start CLASSIC PASTIME (P. Cullen) shifted out and bumped DAREDEVIL (J. Stopps) and both runners became unbalanced.
In the early stages OCH AYE (A. Cox) overraced.
In the middle stages THE TROUBLE IS (D. Evans) hung out and thereafter raced wide.
Leaving the 400 metres HERANDO (Apprentice R. McMahon) shifted out abruptly taking DANCING TOWER (J. Felix) wider, resulting in DANCING TOWER being checked to avoid the heels of HERANDO. Stewards were of the opinion that HERANDO had taken charge of its rider at that stage of the race, despite the efforts of Apprentice McMahon, and that no responsibility for the incident could be attributed to any one rider.
Over the concluding stages CLASSIC PASTIME (P. Cullen) shifted in under pressure and then was steadied away from the heels of RAPID ILLUSION (G. Cullen), which shifted out slightly.
A post-race veterinary examination of DAREDEVIL (J. Stopps) revealed that the gelding had swelling in the off foreleg. Trainer J. Ryan will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided prior to DAREDEVIL being permitted to race again.
Jockey R. Barone reported that FUJI MAGIC was lame on returning to scale. Trainer Mr R. Bradshaw will be advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to FUJI MAGIC being permitted to race again.

EXTERNAL FLAME (D. Armstrong) and BRUNT (W. Kenning) raced wide throughout.
In the straight SHAMROCKS (A.Cox) had a tendency to shift in under pressure.
When questioned about the performance of SNIP ‘N’ SEA Apprentice R. McMahon stated that the gelding began well and travelled kindly in the early stages, until near the 700 metres where it was inclined to lay out. He said that when he put SNIP ‘N’ SEA under pressure the gelding failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion felt flat. Trainer Mr R. Chillemi agreed with the comments made by Apprentice McMahon and added that the near fore plate of SNIP ‘N’ SEA had been dislodged during the race. He further stated that the gelding will now be sent for a lengthy spell.
A post-race veterinary examination of SNIP ‘N’ SEA did not reveal any abnormalities.

Near the 200 metres WISE THOUGHTS (D. Evans) was held up when awkwardly placed on the heels of PACKSYND (G. Cullen) and had to be steadied and shifted wider to obtain clear running.

Race 8: QRSE Ewan Amateur Carnival Cs 1 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st - DEAR JILLY 2nd - CAVALIER APPROACH 3rd - CAUGHT DANCING 4th -
TRISTRAM’S LOUP was a late withdrawal, at 9.25 a.m. Trainer Mr D. Crouch was fined $500 under L.R. 71(1) for failing to notify the scratching of TRISTRAM’S LOUP by the prescribed time.
As D. Crossland was indisposed D. Armstrong was substituted as the rider of CYMBALIST.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow P. Cullen, the rider of CAVALIER APPROACH which finished second, and D. Green, who rode DEAR JILLY which finished first, to view the films. After doing so P. Cullen decided not to lodge an objection.
On jumping INVASIVE (J. Felix) and KHITOBAI (A. Cox) came together and became unbalanced.
UNBRIDLED’S HOPE (Apprentice R. McMahon) began awkwardly and lost ground.
RED CHINA DOLL (J. P. Stanley) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start YOWIE BAY (G. Kliese) hung in and momentarily crowded KHITOBAI (A. Cox) in onto CROCODILE SMILE (Apprentice R. Plumb).
Jockey D. Green (DEAR JILLY) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that shortly after the 200 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CAVALIER APPROACH (P. Cullen), taking that horse in onto INVASIVE (J. Felix), which in turn was taken in onto YOWIE BAY (G. Kliese), resulting in INVASIVE AND YOWIE BAY having to be checked. D. Green was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Tuesday, 8th February 2005, up to and including midnight on 17th February 2005 (8 meetings).
Approaching the winning post RED CHINA DOLL (J. P. Stanley) shifted out when struck with the whip and became awkward on the heels of WINTER SAFARI (D. Evans). RED CHINA DOLL then shifted in whilst being restrained and was disappointed for a narrow run when both WINTER SAFARI and SEXY SUZE (W. Kenning) shifted ground when weakening. No blame for the incident could be attributed to any one rider.
Trainer Mr D. Crouch and Stablehand Mr M. McDonald were admonished for failing to sign the Race-day sheet signifying the arrival time of horses on course and were instructed that should they re-offend in a similar manner, more direct action may be taken.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
