Race 1: Hahn Premium Light QTIS 2-YEAR-OLD Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - SEA ZULU 2nd - FLYING WOODPECKER 3rd - ROSIE’S BOY 4th - PRINCE OF STEEL
As D. Green, the declared rider for KAPABENI, was late arriving on course because of transport difficulties, J. Felix was substituted.
It was noted that whilst parading in the enclosure GHOST FACE (Apprentice R. Plumb) had blood in its mouth. After arriving behind the barriers GHOST FACE was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
GHOST FACE (Apprentice R. Plumb) and PRINCE OF STEEL (D. Price) were slow to begin.
ROSIE’S BOY (J. Stopps) and SEDANTE (M. Elliott) came together at the start.
In the early stages SHENNA’S PRIDE (F. Edwards) raced wide and near the 1000 metres was eased to avoid the heels of MISTER BRUMBY (G. Cullen).
After leaving the 800 metres SHENNA’S PRIDE (F. Edwards) was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.
Rounding the home turn PRINCE OF STEEL (D. Price) raced wide on the track.
At about the 150 metres VALLEY DANE (I. Toward) shifted in and bumped KAPABENI (J. Felix).
After the winning post FLYING WOODPECKER (Apprentice R. McMahon) clipped the heels of SEA ZULU (G. Kliese), which shifted in. G. Kliese was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 2: Johnnie Walker and Dry Class 3 Plate - 1200 metres
1st - MAGIC SHOT 2nd - WOK STAR 3rd - MULLIGAN 4th - MISS PENNYWEIGHT
At the start MISS PENNYWEIGHT (F. Edwards) was tightened for room between RAP THE ZAP (M. Elliott), which shifted out, and MAGIC SHOT (J. Felix), which shifted in. When straightened MAGIC SHOT took MULLIGAN (Apprentice R. McMahon) outwards and inconvenienced CAUGHT DANCING (G. Cullen).
Leaving the 950 metres MULLIGAN (Apprentice R. McMahon) threw its head about for a number of strides and refused to settle.
On the home turn CAUGHT DANCING (G. Cullen) shifted out taking SON OF ZENA (A. Cox) wider.
Near the 150 metres RAP THE ZAP (M. Elliott) was momentarily held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Race 3: Smirnoff Red Class 6 Plate - 1200 metres
1st - ORRONG 2nd - VITEGIC 3rd - MOISEEV 4th - BACKSTAGE GIRL
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of MOISEEV (D. Green) to view the official photo-finish film.
VITEGIC (D. Crossland) shifted out on jumping.
At the start MOISEEV (D. Green) and RELOADED (I. Toward) brushed.
Leaving the 950 metres ORRONG (D. Evans) was eased when tightened for room by KENWOOD ALLEGRO (R. Ryan), which shifted in when not quite clear. BACKSTAGE GIRL (Apprentice R. Plumb), which was following, had to be restrained to avoid the heels of ORRONG. R. Ryan was advised to take more care.
Between the 900 metres and the 800 metres VITEGIC (D. Crossland) improved up onto the heels of MOISEEV (D. Green) and was restrained.
Near the 200 metres ORRONG (D. Evans) improved up onto the heels of KENWOOD ALLEGRO (R. Ryan) and was shifted out abruptly. Then at the 100 metres ORRONG was shifted out to improve and in doing so tightened RELOADED (I. Toward), which had to be eased. D. Evans was severely admonished and advised to take more care of his fellow riders.
Race 4: Real McCoy and Cola Maiden Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - ZOZULINA 2nd - CAVALIER APPROACH 3rd - SEAVIEW LASS 4th - MOUNTAIN FURY
At the start SEAVIEW LASS (D. Green) shifted out and bumped MOUNTAIN FURY (J. P. Stanley), which in turn shifted out and bumped MOSSY OAK (A. Cox), which was taken out, bumped NORTHERN COMMANDER (J. Felix) and was steadied.
At the 550 metres WOODWIND AND BRASS (G. Kliese) shifted in, obliging CAVALIER APPROACH (P. Cullen) to race in restricted room.
Near the 200 metres NORTHERN COMMANDER (J. Felix) improved up onto the heels of MCCOOLHA (J. Stopps) and was restrained.
Jockey J. Stopps (MCCOOLHA) was reprimanded and reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race.
Race 5: QRSE Townsville Bulletin Class 4 Handicap - 1960 metres
1st - MUMS THE WORD 2nd - GIVE AND TELL 3rd - SUNACLANG 4th - FREMANTLE DOCTOR
FREMANTLE DOCTOR (J. Felix) began awkwardly, and at the 1600 metres was momentarily steadily when overracing.
Approaching the 1400 metres KNOCKBACK (I. Toward) shifted in and hampered
Near the 200 metres KNOCKBACK (I. Toward) shifted out and inconvenienced GIVE AND TELL (M. Elliott), which in turn shifted out slightly and brushed SUNACLANG (P. Cullen).
Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of LORD GRANGE. After taking evidence from stable foreperson Mr L. Manzelmann and Jockey D. Evans and viewing the official video films, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed.
Race 6: XXXX Gold Open Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - OVERSEAS 2nd - BRUNT 3rd - STORMY BLUE 4th - PALARCHI
On jumping BORZOV (J. Stopps) shifted out and bumped ROADSPY (G. Kliese).
Apprentice R. Plumb (PALARCHI) was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in approaching the 1100 metres when not quite clear of STORMY LODGE (G. Cullen), which was checked and lost ground.
PALARCHI (Apprentice R. Plumb) raced wide throughout.
Rounding the home turn OVERSEAS (P. Cullen) shifted out to obtain clear running and took PALARCHI (Apprentice R. Plumb) wider.
Close to the finish GASNIER (D. Green) was hampered when crowded between PALARCHI (Apprentice R. Plumb), which shifted in slightly, and ROADSPY (G. Kliese).
W. Kenning (BRUNT) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the finish.
Jockey G. Cullen was cautioned about his use of the whip on STORMY LODGE over the concluding stages.
Race 7: QRSE Robyn Ballinger Farewell Class 1 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st - EMMBOWEN 2nd - DECISO 3rd - AUTOBIOGRAPHY 4th - CHECK
Trainer Mr E. Chillemi was directed to lodge an amended stable return correctly detailing the ownership of CANNY CON. Mr Chillemi was reprimanded for leaving the course without obtaining the permission of the stewards.
KINGS CORONATION (F. Edwards) began awkwardly and overraced in the early stages.
In the early stages SWINGING THE BLUES (D. Evans) raced ungenerously and threw its head about.
At the entrance to the straight DECISO (G. Kliese) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
When questioned trainer Mr G. Dickson could offer no tangible excuse for the disappointing performance of PRESTO PRESTO (D. Green),
