Race 1: Wilson Ryan Grose Maiden Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – REFUHRENCE 2nd – BLISTERING MISS 3rd – SUPER AMY 4th – CHIGWELL
On jumping MINIMUM (L. Morrison) shifted in and bumped DRIVESHAFT (M. Cullen) which knuckled, shifted in and made contact with SUPER AMY (C. Whiteley), which was taken in onto FORWARD VISION (G. Baker). DRIVESHAFT then raced wide throughout the event.
From the 650 metres until near the 300 metres SUPER AMY (C. Whiteley) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
Over the final stages REFUHRENCE (T. Pannell) laid out under pressure.
When asked about the performance of MINIMUM, Jockey L. Morrison explained that the gelding began well and she took up a position close to the running rail. She said that MINIMUM enjoyed a good run in the early and middle stages and at the entrance to the straight she shifted out to gain clear running, but the gelding failed to run on. The explanation was noted.
Race 2: Malpara Florist QTIS Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – HIGH ANXIETY 2nd – RIVER HAWK 3rd – LACHLANS LAGOON 4th – UNTERHALTUNG
LACHLANS LAGOON (T. Pannell) was a little slow to get into stride.
KEEP ME DREAMING (L. Morrison) began awkwardly and then raced ungenerously for some distance. Jockey Morrison said that the filly failed to run on in the straight. She was reminded of her obligation to rider her mounts at least hands and heels right to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J. Morris was advised that KEEP ME DREAMING must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a jump-out before being permitted to race again.
On jumping HAYIL AUGUSTUS (G. Kliese) shifted in onto RIVER HAWK (I. Fry). At the same time UNTERHALTUNG (C. Whiteley) shifted out and brushed RIVER HAWK.
Jockey I. Toward pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 700 metres he permitted VOIRE to shift in when insufficiently clear of COSTA RICA (C. Eaton), which had to be checked and lost its position in the field. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 20th May 2008, up to and including 29th May 2008 (3 NQ meetings).
Near the 250 metres RIVER HAWK (I. Fry) shifted out and hampered UNTERHALTUNG (C. Whiteley).
Close to the finish RIVER HAWK (I. Fry) shifted out and inconvenienced LACHLANS LAGOON (T. Pannell). Jockey I. Fry was advised to exercise more care.
Race 3: Fenwick Suppliers Class 1 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – FIRST EDITION 2nd – SILVERY BELL 3rd – DESERT LIGHTNING 4th – FIERY DIAMOND
When the start was effected ALTHEA ROSE (J. Stopps) refused to leave the barriers. Trainer Ms M. Preston was advised was barred from racing again until it performs satisfactorily in one jump-out and one official barrier trial.
FIRST EDITION (G. Baker) was slow to begin. Following the race Jockey Baker reported that the gelding laid in for the majority of the race.
When asked about the performance of SUCCESSFUL JO, Jockey C. Whiteley stated that in accordance with his instructions, he settled the mare in a forward position, however when asked for an effort in the straight SUCCESSFUL JO failed to run on as expected. He added that in his opinion the mare would be better suited if ridden quietly over a longer distance than today’s event.
When asked to explain the performance of YOU BEAUT, which was having its first start after a spell, Jockey F. Edwards explained that after enjoying a comfortable run early the gelding failed to finish off the race.
Race 4: Bundaberg Rum Class 3 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – LITTLE DREAMER 2nd – CORPORATE CUP/ON THE ROSTER (DH) 4th – GOLDMOFRE
On jumping MOTIVATED (G. Baker) and ALCHOU (G. Cullen) were crowded for room between LITTLE DREAMER (R. Wiggins), which shifted out, and THIRD ROCK LAD (Apprentice C. Isdale), which shifted in.
Joining the course proper MOTIVATED (G. Baker) over-raced and then continued to race ungenerously until well into the home straight.
From the 350 metres to the 200 metres THIRD ROCK LAD (Apprentice C. Isdale) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
ON THE ROSTER (C. Whiteley) shifted the near fore plate and pricked itself during running.
Race 5: Challenge Property Class 2 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st – ROCK A LOT 2nd – CHIEF RED FEATHER 3rd – UPTOWN TYCOON 4th – SAVEDBYTHEBELL
PUBZ (G. Baker) knuckled on jumping.
Approaching the 1200 metres PUBZ (G. Baker), which was over-racing, clipped the heels of SAVEDBYTHEBELL (G. Kliese), which shifted in away from CELESTIAL LAD (I. Fry), and dipped.
From the 1000 metres to the 600 metres UPTOWN TYCOON (P. Cullen) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of INNOCENT VERDICT (C. Eaton).
From near the 1000 metres until approaching the 900 metres JET BOY (W. Kenning) was steadied off heels, threw its head about and raced ungenerously.
Race 6: Barefoot Radler Class 6 Plate – 1200 metres
1st – NASTY LION 2nd – CORTES 3rd – MASHUDU 4th – OUR MISTAKE
At the start LIGHTED (P. Cullen) shifted in and made contact with MASHUDU (C. Whiteley).
Race 7: Lamont Constructions Class 4 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – XAARTRIK 2nd – TEDDY BARE 3rd – FLIPPER MACARTNEY 4th – OUR MORNING GLORY
Jockey I. Toward was dislodged from LEGAL JARGON on the way to the barriers.
Near the 550 metres TEDDY BARE (T. Pannell) over-raced and ran up onto the heels of FLIPPER MACARTNEY (C. Whiteley).
Race 8: Parry Nissan Trackside On WIN News Open Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – LUX 2nd – SOOTH SAYER 3rd – STARRY DANCER 4th – WYOMING
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey R. Wiggins, the rider of SOOTH SAYER, to see the official video film with a view to lodging an objection against LUX (Apprentice C. Isdale) being declared the winner. After viewing the film, Jockey Wiggins elected not to protest and correct weight was declared.
In the straight LUX (Apprentice C. Isdale) drifted out under pressure. Apprentice Isdale was advised to exercise great care in future.
FLICK ‘N’ SPIN (W. Kenning) was slow to get into stride.
