SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

Cairns, 4th December 2010 –

Race 2: Queensland Racing Maiden Plate – 1100 metres

Trainer Ms L. Ashford was fined $100 under A.R.140B for presenting TIDDLIE TILLY to race with other than its approved gear.

Mackay, 19th October 2010 –

Race 5: Statewide bearings Class 3 Plate – 1250 metres

Stewards continued an inquiry into Jockey D. Missen’s riding of ACHILL ISLAND in the early and middle stages and his failure to take up a forward position, in accordance with the horse’s usual racing pattern. Jockey Missen stated that after being slow to begin, he was unable to push forward when CLEAR CONSCIENCE (N. Patchett), which was drawn to his outside, began well and was ridden forward of him. Jockey Missen was of the opinion that if he had attempted to ride ACHILL ISLAND aggressively after missing the start, the gelding would have been obliged to race three or four wide for the majority of the event, therefore he elected to restrain ACHILL ISLAND to the rear of the field and obtain cover. Jockey Missen explained further that ACHILL ISLAND travelled well throughout, however on straightening he had difficulty obtaining clear running between TETSU GAMA and MY NAME IS EARL and after obtaining running near the 200 metres the gelding found the line well. After considering the evidence put forward by Jockey Missen, Trainer J. Russell and the evidence regarding betting transactions on both ACHILL ISLAND and GASEOSA, and viewing the patrol videos, stewards could not be satisfied to the requisite standard that Jockey Missen’s riding of ACHILL ISLAND in the early stages had involved any breach of the Australian Rules of Riding.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

When Jockey G. Kliese was unavailable for personal reasons, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. After taking into account Jockey Kliese's record and the mitigating circumstances Jockey Kliese was reprimanded for failing to fulfil his riding engagements.

Race 1: Book A Xmas Function 18th Dec Maiden Handicap – 1200 metres:
1st – ZANA 2nd – MISTAKEN BID 3rd – BELLADONNA DELAGO 4th – HELIOPOLIS

EASIEST (D. Missen) was slow to begin.

LA BELLA LAYLA (P. Cullen) began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with BELLE FIRE (D. Simmons).

In the early stages BELLADONNA DELAGO (C. Eaton) raced ungenerously.

In the early and middle stages BELLE FIRE (D. Simmons) raced wide.

When asked about the seemingly poor performance of ISLAND’S EDGE, Jockey C. Whiteley explained that he had intended to race handy, however on jumping he was unable to do so when tightened for room by LADONNA DELAGO (C. Eaton), which was laying in away from ZANA (T. Bannon). Jockey Whiteley said that he placed ISLAND’S EDGE under pressure from the 600 metres but the gelding did not respond to his riding and in his opinion failed to handle today’s track conditions.

A post-race veterinary examination of EASIEST (D. Missen) revealed that the filly was suffering from mild colic.

Race 2: Ack Earthmoving Class 3 Handicap – 1630 metres:
1st – SEAFIGHT 2nd – CHARACTER ASSASSIN 3rd – STARTUS 4th – NIFTY NELLIE

In the early stages IDEALLY READY (M. Elliott) raced wide.

Stewards questioned Jockey D. Simmons, the rider of NORWEGIAN, and Apprentice R. Sue-San, the rider of CHARACTER ASSASSIN, regarding the tactics adopted on both horses in the early and middle stages. Jockey Simmons stated that he had been instructed that from its wide alley he should attempt to lead on NORWEGIAN, in accordance with its usual racing pattern. Jockey Simmons said that at the 1200 metres when he was unable to cross CHARACTER ASSASSIN, he elected to restrain his mount in an attempt to have it settle behind CHARACTER ASSASSIN, however the gelding began to over-race. Jockey Simmons added that NORWEGIAN failed to finish the race off as expected. Apprentice Sue-San stated that he also had been instructed to lead, in accordance with the gelding’s normal racing pattern. Apprentice Sue-San stated that after beginning fairly he had to ride CHARACTER ASSASSIN forward to take up a leading position, however when he obtained the lead he also elected to restrain his mount to take a position behind NORWEGIAN, but was unable to do so when CHARACTER ASSASSIN began to over-race. Apprentice Sue-San added that notwithstanding the early tempo of the event CHARACTER ASSASSIN was still able to finish the race off well. The explanations were noted.

Jockey I. Toward will be interviewed in relation to the use of his whip on SEAFIGHT prior to the 100 metres.

Race 3: Racing Queensland QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap (Div 1) – 1000 metres
1st – CARVELON 2nd – THE CADDIE 3rd – LUCYDANE 4th – CANNY WHOOSKA

The start was delayed when, after being placed in the barriers PRINCE CARNEGIE (C. Whiteley) got down under the gates, dislodged its rider and galloped a considerable distance. PRINCE CARNEGIE was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 2.12 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on PRINCE CARNEGIE be refunded in full and that all successful bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of PRINCE CARNEGIE be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: win 16¢, place 14¢. Trainer Ms O. Cairns was advised that a warning has been placed on the barrier manners of PRINCE CARNEGIE.

THE CADDIE (P. Cullen), THE SKATER (T. Bannon) and CHARMER (R. Wiggins) were slow to begin.

Upon returning to scale Jockey J. Stanley reported that LUCYDANE hung in from the 600 metres and that he accidentally dropped his whip near the 300 metres when attempting to correct the horse’s racing manners.

In the early stages CLANCHY (M. Elliott) raced wide.

When questioned about the disappointing performance of THE SKATER, Jockey T. Bannon stated that after being slow to begin the gelding at no stage travelled comfortably. Jockey Bannon expressed the opinion that THE SKATER may have failed to handle today’s slow track conditions. Trainer S. Kendrick will be interviewed regarding the performance of THE SKATER.

Jockey P. Cullen was given the opportunity to explain the performance of THE CADDIE. Jockey Cullen stated that the gelding began very slowly and shortly after the start had to be eased to avoid the hindquarters of CLANCHY (M. Elliott) which shifted inwards. Jockey Cullen added that when placed under pressure from the 500 metres the gelding finished the race off well.

Race 4: Lloyd Mitchell QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap (Div 2) – 1000 metres:
1st – APACHE’S BREW 2nd – GABY WE LOVE 3rd – MELAINA ROSE 4th – BARBIZON

The start was delayed when WAR LION (D. Missen) was kicked by another runner while parading behind the barriers. WAR LION was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

MELAINA ROSE (I. Toward) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start CHAMPAIGNE SILVER (App. R. Sue-San) was bumped when tightened for room between UNTRACEABLE (J. Felix) and UNIQUE BABY (F. Edwards), both of which shifted ground.

HOYO (D. Simmons) and SANDRA JEAN (P. Cullen) raced wide throughout.

Leaving the 800 metres UNTRACEABLE (J. Felix) had to be steadied when forced to race in restricted room inside WAR LION (D. Missen), which was taken in by MELAINA ROSE (I. Toward). Jockey I. Toward was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances and reminded of his obligation to ensure he is at least two lengths clear before shifting ground.

Stewards afforded Jockey D. Missen the opportunity to explain his tactics as the rider of WAR LION, in particular rounding the home turn and in the home straight. Jockey Missen stated that, as WAR LION was having its first race start he had not been given specific instructions, except to have the gelding racing where it was comfortable. Jockey Missen added that after beginning slowly, WAR LION failed to muster speed in the early stages and as a result was forced to race towards the rear of the field. He stated that WAR LION raced greenly rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, and for this reason he was unable to take a run to the inside of UNIQUE BABY (F. Edwards). The explanation was noted.

Race 5: XXXX Gold Class 2 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – TAORMINA 2nd – PRONOUNCE 3rd – ROMAC’S EXPRESS 4th – MY WHIPPY

Prior to the race MY WHIPPY, which sustained an injury en route to the course, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that the gelding had sustained a mild laceration of the near hind leg just below the hock, and was cleared to start.

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey T. Bannon to view the photo finish for fourth place. Jockey Bannon having viewed the photo finish was satisfied with the judge’s placings and stewards declared correct weight.

IL CIBREO (C. Eaton) was slow to begin.

PRONOUNCE (D. Missen) blundered on jumping.

VOIRE (F. Edwards) and IL CIBREO (C. Eaton) raced wide throughout.

Near the 600 metres LIKE A GOD (P. Cullen) blundered and lost ground when tightened for room between FINE SHAKIRA (D. Simmons) and PRONOUNCE (D. Missen), which shifted out momentarily when over-racing on the heels of TAORMINA (R. Wiggins).

Over the concluding stages TAORMINA (R. Wiggins) shifted out under pressure.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on PRONOUNCE, specifically as to why, upon straightening, he elected to proceed to the outside of TAORMINA (R. Wiggins) instead of taking a run between TAORMINA and ROMAC’S EXPRESS (I. Toward), Jockey D. Missen stated that he was already committed to shifting to the outside of TAORMINA to obtain clear running. Jockey Missen added that at that stage of the race the run between TAORMINA and ROMAC’S EXPRESS was very narrow and in his view the better option was to shift to the outside of TAORMINA where there was clear running. The explanation was noted.

Race 6: Verve Design Class 1 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – MANHATTAN SKYLINE 2nd – TAIMEX 3rd – APACHE MAGIC 4th – MIO MONDO

RENEGADES was a late scratching, at 9.30 a.m., by order of the stewards. Trainer J. Jackson will be interviewed regarding the reason for the late withdrawal of the gelding.

TAIMEX (C. Whiteley) began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with APACHE MAGIC (J. Stanley). Shortly after the start APACHE MAGIC was further tightened for room between SILVER TAJ (D. Simmons) and TAIMEX, which shifted in.

When asked about the tactics adopted on LIVADA,in particular as to why the mare led today, Jockey F. Edwards stated that despite beginning only fairly he was able to obtain the lead easily, as a result of the horse’s natural early pace and in accordance with his instructions. Trainer D. Clive will be interviewed as to why Jockey Edwards was instructed to lead on LIVADA.

Stewards questioned Jockey J. Stanley in regard to the performance of APACHE MAGIC. Jockey Stanley explained that he had been instructed to take up a forward position early, however the mare was bumped shortly after the start and he was obliged to take up a rearward position. Jockey Stanley added that APACHE MAGIC travelled only fairly in the middle stages and rounding the home turn, however when he was able to balance APACHE MAGIC near the 300 metres the mare began to improve and when positioned to the outside of other runners near the 200 metres finished the race off very well. The explanation was noted.

Race 7: Townsville Events Class 5 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – WANDERING STAR 2nd – VIA REAL 3rd – LITTLE ADMIRAL 4th – BREAKERS PATH

LITTLE ADMIRAL (G. Cullen) was slow to begin.

At approximately the 900 metres GURU (R. Wiggins) had to be steadied from the heels of WANDERING STAR (App. Sue-San), resulting in CHEQUIN (R. Ryan), which was following having to be steadied from the heels of GURU. As a consequence CHEQUIN shifted out, taking SMARTAAT (M. Elliott) wider on the track. CHEQUIN and SMARTAAT then had to race wide for the remainder of the event.

In the home straight BREAKERS PATH (P. Cullen) laid in under pressure.

Near the 200 metres SMARTAAT (M. Elliott), which was weakening, had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between CHEQUIN (R. Ryan) and SUCCESSFUL JO (F. Edwards).

CHEQUIN (R. Ryan), PROVOCATION (T. Bannon), SMARTAAT (M. Elliott) and GURU (R. Wiggins) raced wide throughout.

Stewards afforded Jockey I. Toward an opportunity to explain the performance of DEVI GARH. Jockey Toward stated that rounding the home turn he was held up on the heels of CHEQUIN (R. Ryan) and was unable to shift out to obtain clear running as SMARTAAT (M. Elliott) was racing close to his outside. He said that upon straightening he elected to take a run between CHEQUIN and GURU (R. Wiggins), however was disappointed for that run. Jockey Toward added that near the 200 metres he was able to shift to the inside of GURU and obtain a clear run, at which point DEVI GARH found the line well.

Race 8: Townsville Engineering Industries Open Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – MATIYA’S PRIDE 2nd – SUPER SHADOW 3rd – NAYNAY 4th – CHEVAL ARGENTE

MATIYA’S PRIDE (A. Merritt) and JENNINGS (C. Whiteley) were slow to begin.

Near the 300 metres GUNNERS BARRACKS (D. Missen) was eased out of the event. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed that it had a suspected fracture of the near fore fetlock. Trainer O. Chillemi will be informed that he must furnish a veterinary certificate of fitness for GUNNERS BARRACKS before the gelding will be permitted to race again.

DON CAUDILLO (App. R. Sue-San) raced wide throughout.
