Race 1: GET YOUR WINTER CARNIVAL TICKETS NOW MAIDEN Handicap – 1300 metres:
1st – POWER PERSONIFIED 2nd – NOTABLE 3rd – CLANCHY 4th – SHEISAMADOOZY

Jockey M. Elliott will be interviewed regarding his engagements for CLANCHY and PYRAMID GOLD. PYRAMID GOLD was a late scratching when no rider was available.

FORTUNA SECUNDA was a late scratching when no rider was available.

On jumping CRIMEA (J. Babarovich) and NOTABLE (J. Felix) bumped.

LEGLESIA (G. Kliese) began awkwardly and shortly after the start was tightened for room between DANCE RUBIE DANCE (G. Cullen) and CLANCHY (M. Elliott). Then in the early stages LEGLESIA over-raced.

In the early stages PICALUREN (J. Stopps) over-raced.

Near the 1000 metres OCTA DUCK (A. Merritt) began to over-race and continued to do so until the 800 metres.

Rounding the home turn PICALUREN (J. Stopps) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Near the 200 metres PICALUREN (J. Stopps) had to be eased from the heels of SHEISAMADOOZY (F. Edwards).

DANCE RUBIE DANCE (G. Cullen) raced wide throughout.

A post-race veterinary examination of PICALUREN (J. Stopps) reveald that the gelding had sustained a suspected injury to a suspensory ligament. Trainer T. Rowe was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for PICALUREN prior to the gelding being permitted to race again.

Race 2: – TROPICAL ICE TUBE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 metres:
1st – IN A JAM 2nd – MONSOON MIST 3rd – LIVADA 4th – HUNNICUTT

GALENA and MORE LIPS were late scratchings when no riders were available.

JOY’S SPIRIT (G. Cullen) and MONSOON MIST (F. Edwards) were slow to begin.

Near the 850 metres MONSOON MIST (F. Edwards) began to over-race and in doing so shifted out, taking WINDWALKER (G. Kliese) and JOY’S SPIRIT (G. Cullen) wider. A post-race veterinary examination of JOY’S SPIRIT revealed that the mare was showing a slow recovery rate.

For a short distance leaving the 100 metres MANOLETE (J. Stopps) was held up on the heels of LIVADA (A. Merritt).

THEASHES (M. Elliott) raced wide throughout.

When questioned about the performance of HUNNICUTT, Jockey J. Babarovich stated that the gelding was able to obtain a position outside the leader, however failed to finish off the race as was expected and in his view was disappointing. Jockey Babarovich said that in the early stages of the home straight HUNNICUTT was inclined to shy in and away from IN A JAM (I. Toward), which improved to his outside.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on WINDWALKER, particularly in the early stages, Jockey G. Kliese stated that his instructions were to take up a position just off the speed, however after beginning only fairly he was of the view that rather than be caught wide and having to ride the gelding aggressively to fulfil his instructions, WINDWALKER would be better served by taking up a midfield position. Jockey Kliese added that near the 800 metres MONSOON MIST (F. Edwards), which was racing to his inside, began to over-race and shifted out, taking him wider and forcing him further back in the field. Jockey Kliese further stated that he was able to place WINDWALKER under pressure rounding the home turn and the gelding responded to his riding and finished the race off well.

Jockey J. Babarovich was fined $100 under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on HUNNICUTT on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100 metres.

Race 3: TROPICAL ICE SUB ZER CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1630 metres:
1st – SUPER WIT 2nd – MUKADDAMAH SON 3rd – BIG BOORI 4th – HAILING

Upon pulling up Jockey J. Felix was dislodged from JOYFUL LADY and suffered a seemingly harmless fall. Jockey Felix was examined by the ambulance officer and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

FAIRY (J. Stopps) was slow to begin.

In the early stages MICHELET (A. Merritt) and JOYFUL LADY (J. Felix) raced wide.

Jockey J. Felix reported that he was caught wide in the early stages and he allowed JOYFUL LADY to stride forward and take up a leading position. Once he was able to do so, JOYFUL LADY began to pull and he was unable to restrain the mare in the middle stages and as a consequence JOYFUL LADY compounded in the home straight. Trainer O. Cairns stated that she would experiment with the addition of a butterfly bit at the mare’s next start. Ms Cairns added that if JOYFUL LADY continued to show signs of over-racing she would nominate the mare for races over shorter distances.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on BIG BOORI, which raced further back in the field than expected, Jockey I. Toward stated that he was instructed to take up a position just behind the leaders however, due to the fast pace in the early and middle stages, BIG BOORI settled further back than expected. Jockey Toward added that from the 800 metres he attempted to improve his position and BIG BOORI worked into the race gradually but finished the race off only fairly. Trainer R. Wrigley confirmed the instructions and noted that BIG BOORI had shown a tendency to over-race in the past and as such she instructed Jockey Toward not to be overly aggressive on the gelding in the early stages. Ms Wrigley was of the view that the early speed contributed to BIG BOORI settling further back than anticipated. The explanation was noted.

Race 4: TROPICAL ICE WINTER CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1630 metres:
1st – IMAHERE 2nd – MAD MUSIC 3rd – GOOGLY 4th – ANOTHER NIP

TAIMATU (J. Stopps) was slow to begin.

In the early and middle stages COCKERELLI (F. Edwards) over-raced.

Near the 1300 metres ALBUQUERQUE (J. Felix) had to be eased when tightened for room by COCKERELLI (F. Edwards), which was taken in by GOOGLY (M. Elliott).

Rounding the first turn COCKERELLI (F. Edwards) shifted out when being restrained, allowing ALBUQUERQUE (J. Felix) to improve to its inside. COCKERELLI, which was over-racing, then shifted in and tightened the running of ALBUQUERQUE, which had to be eased as a consequence.

When questioned about the performance of RIM OF FIRE Jockey J. Babarovich stated that the gelding over-raced badly in the early and middle stages. Jockey Babarovich added that near the 800 metres RIM OF FIRE improved onto heels and as a consequence pulled its way to the front. Jockey Babarovich said that as a result of the gelding’s racing manners RIM OF FIRE compounded badly in the straight.

A post-race veterinary examination of GOOGLY (M. Elliott), which broke down when returning to the enclosure, revealed that the gelding had fractured its near fore sesamoid. GOOGLY was subsequently transported to the Townsville Veterinary clinic, at which point a decision was made to euthanase the gelding on humane ground.

Race 5: TROPICAL ICE DEEP FREEZE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1000 metres:
1st – DAHARA PRIZE 2nd – CATCHER TORY 3rd – DOMITILLA 4th – SO PRICELESS

The start of the race was delayed whilst some ducks were removed from near the 400 metres.

FLINTLOCK (G. Kliese) and SO PRICELESS (G. Cullen) were slow to begin.

FLAMING SHEMOZZLE (J. Babarovich) raced wide throughout.

Upon returning to scale Jockey G. Cullen reported that SO PRICELESS was held up and unable to obtain clear running in the early part of the straight and was obliged to shift in near the 200 metres, at which point he was able to improve.

When questioned about the disappointing performance of DANZIG DANCER Jockey I. Toward stated that the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages, however when asked for an effort rounding the home turn failed to respond to his riding and was most disappointing. Trainer G. Wehlow was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and added that he would trial the filly without blinkers and add a tongue tie to the horse’s gear. Mr Wehlow undertook to advise stewards should anything be amiss with DANZIG DANCER in the days following the event.

Race 6: TROPICAL ICE BIG CHILL OPEN HANDICAP – 1000 METRES
1st – SIENA’S PRIDE 2nd – ANDAMON 3rd – DIAMOND PURSUIT 4th – ALTERNATE

Prior to the race connections informed stewards that VOODOO BROWN MAGIC (A. Merritt) would be ridden on the speed, contrary to its recent racing pattern.

The start was delayed when ALTERNATE (I. Toward) proved difficult to load into the barriers.

On jumping SIENA’S PRIDE (G. Kliese) and ON BAIL (G. Cullen) bumped.

ANDAMON (M. Elliott) was slow to begin.

Near the 850 metres SIENA’S PRIDE (G. Kliese) had to be eased when tightened for room between ON BAIL (G. Cullen) and HIGHONRUM (F. Edwards). Jockey F. Edwards was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Approaching the 700 metres HIGHONRUM (F. Edwards) shifted in and made contact with ON BAIL (G. Cullen), which became unbalanced for a short distance. Jockey F. Edwards was advised to exercise more care.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight ALTERNATE (I. Toward) was held up for clear running.

ALL WINNERS were sent to be swabbed and pre-race samples were taken from MUKADDAMAH SON, FAIRY, GOOGLY, RIM OF FIRE, SIENA’S PRIDE and ANDAMON
