SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:

TOWNSVILLE 14TH JUNE 2011

Race 5:

Jockey P. Cullen, the rider of KASA GOLD, was reprimanded under A.R. 137A(4)(b) for using his whip above shoulder height over the concluding stages.

Race 4: Tropical Ice Winter Class 5 Handicap – 1630 metres

When questioned as to the seemingly improved performance of IMAHERE, trainer B. Snelling stated that this was the gelding’s third start this preparation and the horse was nearing peak fitness. Mr Snelling was of the view that IMAHERE had always performed best over distances similar to today’s event and as such had appreciated the step up in distance from its most recent starts. Mr Snelling also stated that the gelding had worked well in its preparation to date and he was confident of an improved performance, however was surprised by the win and felt that IMAHERE had benefited from some luck in running which assisted the gelding’s improved performance. The explanation was noted.

Townsville - Saturday 25 June 2011

Race 5: Tropical Ice Deep Freeze Class 2 Handicap – 1000 metres

When questioned as to the seemingly improved performance of CATCHERY TORY trainer G. Dickson stated that blinkers and pacifiers had been added to the mare’s approved gear in an attempt to have it racing closer to the speed. However, CATCHER TORY again failed to muster the required speed in the early stages, despite the efforts of its rider to race in a forward position, bearing in mind the fast pace set in the early stages of today’s event. As a consequence CATCHER TORY was forced to settle further back than anticipated, but when placed under pressure rounding the home turn was able to finish the race off, which was in contrast to its very disappointing performance last start. Mr Dickson was of the view that the addition of blinkers and pacifiers had assisted the mare in finishing off the race. Mr Dickson further stated that he would give consideration to instructing jockeys to ride the mare quietly with cover at its future starts.

Trainer G. Wehlow advised that DANZIG DANCER had been inspected by a veterinary surgeon, who could not find anything amiss with the filly.

Race 1: Hotel Townsville Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – SMUTTY JOHNS 2nd - ONLY LOOKING 3rd – TRAVEL 4th – ELLERSLIE LAD

CRIMEA was a late scratching, at 12.04 p.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Mr J. Robbins was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to CRIMEA being permitted to race again.

At the start TRAVEL (G. Kliese) lost ground when tightened for room between SHE’S FIRED UP (App. C. Pye) and LIGHT MOON (P. Cullen), both of which shifted ground.

Near the 600 metres BALAROOK (J. Stopps) had to be checked when tightened for room between LUCYDANE (D. Tanti), which shifted in marginally, and TRAVEL (G. Kliese), which was bumped by SHE’S FIRED UP (App. C. Pye), became unbalanced and shifted out.

IT’S COMPLICATED (A. Coome), HIDDEN GLORY (J. Stanley) and LUCYDANE (D. Tanti) raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of HIDDEN GLORY revealed that the filly had sustained lacerations to the near hind fetlock.

Following the race trainer G. Dickson reported that LUCYDANE (D. Tanti) had sustained lacerations to both hind legs after being galloped on.

When questioned as to the performance of TRAVEL, Jockey G. Kliese stated that after beginning only fairly he was bumped shortly after the start and as a consequence was forced to race further back than anticipated. Jockey Kliese added that, bearing in mind the incident shortly after the start, he was not entirely disappointed with the horse’s performance.

Race 2: The Avenues Tavern Class 3 Handicap - 1630 metres
1st – RAMSAY 2nd – KASA GOLD 3rd – HORBURY TERRACE 4th – GRAND SILENCE

Trainer R. Chillemi provided documentation evidencing that D. Crossland had been declared as the rider of RESIDENCE prior to the required time for jockey declarations and as such no action was taken against Mr Chillemi.

COCKERELLI (D. Tanti) and JAMESON AICH (T. Bannon) were both slow to begin.

In the early stages NO LIMITATION (G. Cullen) and KASA GOLD (P. Cullen) raced wide.

In the early and middle stages BIG BOORI (App. C. Pye) over-raced and near the 1200 metres had to be eased when tightened for room by MOB RULE (J. Stopps), which shifted in momentarily.

In the early stages of the home straight BIG BOORI (App. C. Pye) was held up and unable to obtain clear running, and over the concluding stages had to be eased from the heels of GRAND SILENCE (I. Toward).

In the early part of the straight RIM OF FIRE (A. Merritt) was held up and near the 250 metres was disappointed for a run to the inside of COCKERELLI (D. Tanti) and as a consequence was further held up until leaving the 100m at which point it was able to improve into that run and obtain clear running.

Leaving the 100 metres COCKERELLI shifted in, forcing its rider, D. Tanti, to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Over the concluding stages BIG BOORI (App. C. Pye) had to be eased to avoid the heels of GRAND SILENCE (I. Toward).

Over the concluding stages JAMESON AICH (T. Bannon) had to be steadied from the heels of HORBURY TERRACE (A. Coome).

When questioned as to the performance of RESIDENCE, Jockey D. Crossland stated that the gelding did not feel entirely comfortable at any stage of the event. Jockey Crossland added that he attempted to improve his position leaving the 600 metres, however RESIDENCE failed to respond as expected and proved very disappointing. Trainer R. Chillemi said that RESIDENCE appeared somewhat flat today and raced like a tired horse. Mr Chillemi was also of the view that RESIDENCE may have failed to handle the increase in distance, as it had failed at it its last start over 1600 metres. Notwithstanding that Mr Chillemi was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and undertook to advise stewards should anything be amiss with RESIDENCE in the days following the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was making an abnormal respiratory sound and showing a slower than normal recovery rate. A swab sample was ordered to be taken.

P. Cullen, the rider of KASA GOLD, was reprimanded under A.R.137A(4)(b) for raising his whip above shoulder height.

Race 3: Delta Office Solutions Class 1 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – DANE PEGGY 2nd – BEAUX STRATA 3rd – STRUCKBYLIGHTNING 4th – WHATZAHMATA / WINDWALKER (DH)

The start was delayed when NOTABLE (J. Felix) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Trainer O. Cairns was advised that a warning has been placed on the gelding’s barrier manners.

Trainer S. Kendrick advised stewards that BEAUX STRATA (N. Ptachett) which was having its first start for the stable would attempt to be ridden in a forward position. Despite the efforts of its rider BEAUX STRATA was unable to muster the necessary speed in the early stages to take up a forward position and near the 1200m had to be eased when momentarily tightened for room between JOY’S SPIRIT (G. Cullen) and WINDWALKER (J. Stopps). Shortly thereafter BEAUX STRATA began to over-race and near the 900m when continuing to over-race had to be eased from the heels of STRUCKBYLIGHTNING (A. Coome) and as a consequence shifted out and raced wide from that point onwards.

STRUCKBYLIGHTNING over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

SO DOTTI (J. Stanley) hung out rounding the home turn.

SHE KEEPS ME BUSY (C. Pye), STRUCKBYLIGHTNING and WINDWALKER all raced wide throughout.

From the 200m to the 100m JOY’S SPIRIT was held up on the heels of SHE KEEPS ME BUSY.

Leaving the 100m SHE KEEPS ME BUSY had to be eased when BEAUX STRATA shifted in under pressure. Jockey N. Patchett will be advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Upon entering the home straight WINDWALKER became held up on the heels of SHE KEEPS ME BUSY and then was disappointed for a run between SHE KEEPS ME BUSY and MICHELET (T. Bannon) before being able to obtain clear running to the inside of MICHELET at a point near the 200m.

Race 4: MorleysTownsville Dollars QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – BALUSTRADE 2nd – BOLT FROM THE BLUE 3rd – JARAMAN LAGO 4th – RATTUS CONATUS

D. Tanti replaced C. Pye as the rider of WAR LION. C. Pye had previously accepted the riding engagement on THE CADDIE, which was the first emergency.

Connections advised that HUNNICUT would be ridden with cover as it had failed to finish off its most recent races when ridden in a forward position. A public announcement was made to this effect. Jockey J. Felix and Trainer J. Robbins will be interviewed as to the tactics adopted on HUNNICT in the early stages of the event.

THE CADDIE (App. C. Pye) was slow to begin.

WAR LION (D. Tanti) began awkwardly and shifted in, taking BOLT FROM THE BLUE (P. Cullen) in onto ROCKET ON BY (G. Kliese).

Near the 1000m JARAMAN LAGO (A. Coome) raced ungenerously for a short distance when awkwardly placed on the heels of YOUNG GUNZ (J. Stopps)

HUNNICUT (J. Felix) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

Near the 900 metres THE CADDIE (App. C. Pye) had to be checked when HELIOPOLIS (A. Merritt) shifted in. Jockey A. Merritt was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under A. R. 137(a) in that near the 900 metres he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent HELIOPOLIS from shifting in when insufficiently clear of THE CADDIE (App. C. Pye), which was tightened for room resulting in Apprentice Pye having to check the momentum of THE CADDIE, which lost ground. Jockey Merritt was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 meetings to begin at midnight tonight, 2 July 2011 and expire at midnight Saturday 9th July 2011.

Near the 800 metres THE CADDIE (App. C. Pye) hung out across the heels of ROCKET ON BY (G. Kliese) and had to be steadied.

ROCKET ON BY (G. Kliese) over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

Approaching the 550 metres HUNNICUTT (J. Felix) shifted out to improve and as a consequence SUNTIME (N. Patchett), which was following, had to be steadied. Jockey Felix was advised to exercise more care.

ROCKET ON BY became held up for clear running upon entering the home straight until near the 100m at which point it attempted to improve into a run between BOLT FROM THE BLUE and JARAMON LAGO both of which then shifted ground marginally, under pressure, resulting in ROCKET ON BY being disappointed for that run.

BALUSTRADE (D. Crossland), BOLT FROM THE BLUE and WAR LION all raced wide throughout.

Race 5: TPI Association Winter Cup Open Handicap - 2100 metres
1st – PROM KNIGHT 2nd – PREACHER MAN 3rd – FRISCO BOPPER 4th – TEDDY BARE

Jockey I. Toward pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he allowed FRISCO BOPPER to shift in when insufficiently clear of MASTER HUGH (A. Merritt), which was taken in onto MOLOTOV(A. Nicholls). As a result, Jockey A. Nicholls had to check the momentum of MOLOTOV, which lost ground. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 2 meetings, to commence at midnight on Thursday, 7th July 2011, up to and including midnight on Saturday, 9th July 2011.

PREACHER MAN (C. Pye) had a tendency to hang in for the majority of the home straight placing its rider at a disadvantage.

PROM KNIGHT (N. Patchett) raced wide in the middle stages of the event.

Jockey J. Felix was afforded the opportunity to explain the tactics adopted on BROMAR in the middle stages when the gelding opened up a sizable lead on the remainder of the field. Jockey Felix stated that he was instructed to take up a leading position and was able to comply with those instructions somewhat easily in the early stages. Jockey Felix further stated that BROMAR was able to increase its lead without being pressured in the middle stages and that he was reluctant to restrain the gelding as it had shown a tendency to over-race fiercely when being restrained at its last start. Jockey Felix noted that he placed BROMAR under pressure near the 800m and again near the 600m in an attempt to maintain the lead however the gelding began to weaken and failed to finish the race off. Trainer O. Cairns confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Felix and was of the view that the tactics adopted in the middle stages did not have a negative effect on the overall performance of BROMAR bearing in mind its most recent results. The explanation was noted.

Trainer J. Stanton will be interviewed as to the seemingly disappointing performance of MOLOTOV. A post-race veterinary examination of MOLOTOV failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A post-race swab was ordered to be taken from MOLOTOV.

When questioned as to the performance of ROYAL CAUSEWAY both jockey J. Stanley and trainer R. Chillemi were of the view that the gelding failed to run out the 2100 metres of today’s event. Jockey Stanley stated that despite travelling comfortably throughout the majority of the event ROYAL CAUSEWAY failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the early stages of the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ROYAL CAUSEWAY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 6: WHK Weight For Age – 1200 metres
1st – DISREPUTE 2nd – SEA MARVISTA 3rd – KANETOSHI KING 4th – THE TAKE

On the way to the barriers ULLADULLA dislodged its rider, G. Kliese, and completed a circuit of the course rider less. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of ULLADULLA at 4.44 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on ULLADULLA be refunded in full and that all successful bets made with bookmakers prior to the withdrawal of ULLADULLA be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: win 23¢, place 18¢.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey D. Tanti, the rider of SEA MARVISTA which finished second, against DISREPUTE (I. Toward) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 800 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the official patrol films and taking into account their own observations, stewards found that although SEA MARVISTA had to be eased when tightened for room near the 800m between DISREPUTE which shifted in marginally and VOODOO BROWN MAGIC which shifted out, the minor interference suffered by SEA MARVISTA did not warrant a reversal of the placing, bearing in mind the official margin of a half length. Subsequently the protest was dismissed and correct weight declared on the numbers semaphored by the judge.

Jockey K. Rockett was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 900 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of LESNER (P. Cullen), which was taken in onto BLACK MORGAN (J. Stanley), which was tightened for room between LESNER and the running rail, had to check and lost ground. Jockey Rockett was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 3 meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday, 9th July 2011, up to and including midnight on Tuesday, 19th July 2011.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the reason for LESNER (P. Cullen), having to be checked near the 800m and lose its rightful running. The inquiry was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed when Jockey Crossland left the course without first seeking permission.

KANETOSHI KING (D. Crossland) and ORIENTELLE (A. Coome) raced wide throughout.

SEA MARVISTA was momentarily held up for clear running upon straightening.

When questioned as to the performance of BLACK MORGAN, Jockey Stanley expressed his disappointment in the performance and stated that the gelding began to hang out leaving the 900m and continued to do so for a considerable distance and at no stage throughout the event felt entirely comfortable. Jockey Stanley added that upon straightening BLACK MORGAN failed to respond to his riding as expected and upon pulling up felt short in its action. Trainer G. Dickson will be interviewed at a later date.

Race 7: Townsville RSL Class 6 Plate - 1200 metres
1st – SPEED SECRET 2nd – MAZUKA 3rd – LOUQUALO 4th – SAINTLY DANCER

LIGHTNING GLANCE (A. Merritt) was slow to begin.

DANARDOS (A. Coome) blundered upon jumping.

MANIERE D’ETRE (J. Stanley) had to be eased shortly after the start when tightened for room between I GOT ONE (P. Cullen) and LOUQUALO (D. Crossland) which shifted. Jockey Crossland will be reminded of his obligations to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground in future and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

In the early and middle stages LOUQUALO (D. Crossland) over-raced.

Near the 800m READY TO RISE (R. Ryan) improved onto the heels of MANIERE D’ETRE and shifted out taking RUNNING REIGN (N. Ptachett) extremely wide. Both READY TO RISE and RUNNING REIGN then raced wide for the remainder of the event.

In the home straight LOUQUALO (D. Crossland) shifted out under pressure.
