MACKAY TURF CLUB, THURSDAY, 7TH JULY 2011
Stewards today finalised an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted aboard MONTGRESIN in Race 7, at Townsville on 14th June 2011. Trainer G. Duncan advised stewards that he had instructed Jockey C. Whiteley to settle the horse in a handy position if possible. Mr Duncan noted that MONTGRESIN began awkwardly and added that in its recent performances the gelding had been reluctant to race tractably when asked to improve in the early and middle stages. Mr Duncan informed stewards that he expected a forward showing from MONTGRESIN and connections had supported the horse accordingly. Jockey C. Whiteley said that MONTGRESIN threw its head in the air as the start was effected and as a result began awkwardly. Jockey Whiteley added that in the early stages he was reluctant to take up a position behind COMMON OBJECTIVE, as he was of the view that the inside of the track was inferior going and in his opinion the gelding was better suited being ridden two or three horses off the inside running rail. Jockey Whiteley noted further that MONTGRESIN did not respond to his riding in the middle stages and only began to improve into the race when placed under heavy pressure over the final 200 metres. Stewards advised Jockey Whiteley that they were critical of his actions in the early stages, in that after beginning awkwardly there was an opportunity for him to improve into a handy position on the back of COMMON OBJECTIVE, thus complying with his instructions. Taking into account the comments of Mr Duncan and Jockey Whiteley, and the betting transactions on the race, stewards could not be satisfied to the requisite standard that Jockey Whiteley had breached any rules of racing.
Race 1: Book Now for the 103.1 Hot FM Party Zone QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – KELLDEANO 2nd - BROKE BUT LUCKY 3rd – GLOUCESTER STORM 4th – TAT ZEPHYR
TSUIMAI WARRIOR (J. Felix) was slow to begin.
GLOUCESTER STORM (M. Elliott) and SPACE SAVER (A. Merritt) raced wide throughout.
Jockey D. Tanti reported that TAT ZEPHYR was slow to begin and consequently the colt raced further back in the field than had been anticipated. Jockey Tanti added that leaving the 200 metres TAT ZEPHYR was momentarily held up for clear running and was obliged to shift out to improve and as such finished the race off well. Jockey Tanti informed stewards that he had advised connections that the colt may be better suited when ridden quietly in races over a longer distance than today’s event.
Race 2: Glenn Sexton Pty Ltd Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 1 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – MONEGASQUE 2nd – POWER PERSONIFIED 3rd – PUDZIANOWSKI 4th – PEPPI LE PAW

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight SOBO (T. Bannon) was held up until near the 200 metres.

Toward), between SOBO (T. Bannon) and DESTINY EXPRESS (A. Merritt), which shifted in. Jockey A. Merritt was reprimanded and reminded of his obligation to stop riding and straighten in similar circumstances.

Race 6: Townsville Bulletin Magnetic Island Mile Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – TEDDY BARE 2nd – MOLOTOV 3rd – COMMON OBJECTIVE 4th – MIGHTY MITE
After riding in Race 5, Jockey D. Crossland became indisposed, was examined by the ambulance officer and stood down from his further engagements. Substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Crossland was advised that he must furnish a medical clearance before being permitted to ride again.
In the early and middle stages SUPER ZERO (J. Babarovich) over-raced.
Near the 50 metres FORBES (G. Kliese) had to be steadiefd when I GOT ONE (A. Merritt) shifted in under pressure.
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on TEDDY BARE, Jockey T. Banon started that she was instructed to lead, the same as the instructions given at the gelding’s previous start. Jockey Bannon advised that she was able to obtain the lead somewhat easily, and leaving the 1000 metres she placed TEDDY BARE under pressure in an effort to extend the lead, which it was able to do. When questioned, trainer J. Wehlow stated that he was anticipating a forward showing by the gelding today as TEDDY BARE had performed well at the track and distance at its most recent start. Mr Wehlow added that the gelding was suited by being able to obtain the lead easily, contrary to its most recent performance when it was his intention to have the horse lead, but it was unable to do so. The explanations were noted.
When questioned as to the performance of CASH ATTACK, Jockey P. Cullen stated that after beginning fairly he expected to position the gelding just worse than midfield, however near the 1300 metres was forced to ease CASH ATTACK when tightened for room and raced further back in the field than anticipated. Jockey Cullen said that he was reluctant to shift wider on the track to improve his position leaving the 1000 metres because CASH ATTACK performs best when able to finish off its races with a final sprint. Jockey Cullen said that he attempted to improve near the 600 metres, at which point CASH ATTACK responded to his riding, however he was disappointed that CASH ATTACK was not able to finished off as expected and was of the view that the horse raced more dour due to its recent heavy workload and was looking for races over a longer distance. The explanation was noted.
Race 7: Talbot Heatley Lightning Handicap (Scaled -2.5KG) - 1000 metres

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer J. Robbins for the late declaration of Jockey T. Bannon as the rider of HIGHONRUM.
The start was delayed when DIAMOND PURSUIT (J. Babarovich) proved difficult to load into the barriers.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey J. Stopps, the rider of the fourth placed APACHE PUP, to view the official photofinish. After viewing the print, Jockey Stopps was satisfied with the placings semaphored by the judge.
The declaration of correct weight was further delayed while stewards reviewed the video footage over the concluding stages, in particular in regard to the racing manners of LOUQUALO (D. Tanti). Having considered the matter, stewards declared correct weight. Subsequently trainer R. Chillemi was advised that LOUQUALO will be required to trial satisfactorily before being permitted to race again, due to its racing manners over the concluding stages, where it attempted to savage KANETOSHI KING (A. Coome).
LOUQUALO (D. Tanti), APACHE PUP (J. Stopps) and BLACK MORGAN (A. Merritt) were slow to begin.
At the start ALTERNATE (I. Toward) was tightened for room between SIENA’S PRIDE (P. Cullen), which shifted in, and HERESAY (F. Edwards), which was taken out by CHEVAL ARGENTE (R. Ryan) and as a result lost ground.
