Race 1: NQ Amateurs Sat 20 August Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – CALL A CAB 2nd - SUDDENLY SWEET 3rd – CRIMEA 4th – CHEEKY BOOTS
TWISTED ECHO (T. Bannon) began awkwardly and shortly after the start was tightened for room between DEMOTED (App. C. Pye) and SLICK SHOES (A. Coome).
DEMOTED (App. C. Pye) was slow to begin and in the middle stages over-raced.
TWISTED ECHO (T. Bannon) hung out for the majority of the event. Trainer J. Swift was advised that a warning had been placed on the horse’s racing manners.
For a short distance approaching the 200 metres DEMOTED (App. C. Pye) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
CALL A CAB (P. Cullen) and SLICK SHOES (A. Coome) raced wide throughout.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of SLICK SHOES, Jockey A. Coome stated that he was instructed to position the gelding with cover just behind the leaders, however the gelding refused to settle in the early stages and as such he was unable to obtain cover in accordance with his instructions and was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event. Jockey Coome said that rounding the home turn SLICK SHOES became unbalanced and then had a tendency to race greenly in the home straight and as a consequence SLICK SHOES failed to respond to his riding in the straight and proved very disappointing. Trainer J. Russell expressed her disappointment with the performance of SLICK SHOES and advised that she would consider stepping the gelding up in distance at its next start, in the hope that it would settle in the early stages of its raced. Ms Russell advised stewards that SLICK SHOES had been diagnosed with spurs on its knees, which do not affect the gelding’s performance, however should it fail to improve on today’s performance at its next start, she would consider having the gelding operated on to remove the spurs. A post-race veterinary examination of SLICK SHOES found the gelding to be physically sound, however was mildly distressed.

1st – DAHARA PRIZE 2nd - PRONOUNCE 3rd – THUNDER HILL 4th – LYNDI’S GIFT

A public announcement was made to that effect. The inquiry into A TOUCH OF FROST racing with other than its approved gear was adjourned to allow Ms Russell to provide the necessary documentation.
DOUBLE LINES (App. C. Pye) and SCIROCCO SAN (J. Stopps) were a little slow to begin.
In the early stages MORE LIPS (J. Babarovich) was slow to muster speed.

Approaching the 400 metres SCIROCCO SAN (J. Stopps) was held up for clear running.

Race 3: www.townsvillerturfclub.com.au Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – THE CADDIE 2nd – DANE WILL DO 3rd – LEGLESIA 4th – JANAMAZ
Prior to the declaration of correct weight the judge incorrectly semaphored PYRAMID GOLD (M. Elliott) as being placed 5th, and then amended his decision, in accordance with the provisions of A.R.156(1) to show that CLEATS (T. Bannon)was placed 5th. Accordingly, correct weight was declared on the numbers semaphored by the judge.
SWIFTLY BRAVE (C. Whiteley) and LEGLESIA (P. Cullen) were slow to begin.
Shortly after the start SWIFTLY BRAVE (C. Whiteley) was tightened for room between CLANCHY (App. C. Pye) and NOTABLE (F. Edwards), which was taken out by PYRAMID GOLD (M. Elliott).
In the early and middle stages CLEATS (T. Bannon) raced wide.
Near the 800 metres LEGLESIA (P. Cullen), which was over-racing, improved up on the heels of CLANCHY (App. C. Pye) and shifted out, taking HAILING (D. Simmons) wider.
CLANCHY (App. C. Pye) and HAILING (D. Simmons) raced wide throughout.
When questioned as to the performance of JANAMAZ , Jockey A. Coome stated that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages, despite being pressured for the lead. Jockey Coome added that the mare had a tendency to shift out under pressure at the top of the straight and in his opinion may have got its tongue over the bit. Jockey Coome noted that despite being pressured for the lead, he was disappointed with the mare’s inability to finish off the race as he had expected, and as such had advised connections to experiment with a tongue control bit. Trainer R. Chillemi will be interviewed regarding the performance of JANAMAZ.
When afforded the opportunity to explain his riding of SWIFTLY BRAVE rounding the home turn and in the home straight, Jockey C. Whiteley stated that upon straightening he was reluctant to proceed into a run between PYRAMID GOLD (M. Elliott) and SHEISAMADOOZY (J. Felix) as PYRAMID GOLD was inclined to shift in at that point. Jockey Whiteley added that near the 200 metres when PYRAMID GOLD shifted out around the heels of CLEATS (T. Bannon), he was able to place SWIFTLY BRAVE under pressure in an effort to obtain a run between CLEATS and JANAMAZ (A. Coome), however was disappointed for that run near the 150 metres when both horses shifted ground., and was held up for clear running for the remainder of the event. Jockey Whiteley stated further that upon straightening he was hopeful of improving into the race on the back of JANAMAZ. However, due to JANAMAZ failing to finish off the race as expected and due to runners forward of him shifting ground, he was unable to place SWIFTLY BRAVE under pressure for the majority of the home straight. Stewards noted the explanation tendered by Jockey Whiteley, however were critical of his riding, particularly his lack of vigour rounding the home turn and upon straightening, where there appeared to be an initial opportunity to improve to the inside of PYRAMID GOLD. In the circumstances stewards were not satisfied that Jockey Whiteley’s actions were in breach of the Australian Rules of Racing. A post-race veterinary examination of SWIFTLY BRAVE did not reveal any significant abnormalities.
Jockey T. Bannon will be interviewed in regard to the tactics adopted on CLEATS.

Near the 800 metres DOMITILLA (App. C. Pye) had to be eased from the heels of FIESTA SAN FERMIN (I. Toward).
When questioned as to the reason for YUKON MYSTERY racing forward today, Jockey J. Stopps stated that he was unable to obtain cover in the early part of the event and as a consequence, after racing wide in the early stages the mare pulled its way to the front. The explanation was noted.
Near the 300 metres CECOTTO (P. Cullen) improved onto the heels of YUKON MYSTERY (J. Stopps) , was steadied and from then until leaving the 200 metres was held up for clear running.
