GENERAL:
Jockey L. Morrison reported to the stewards that she had sustained a laceration to her forehead when unloading gear from her vehicle. Jockey Morrison was examined by the ambulance officer and cleared to fulfil her engagements.
Due to there being a shortage of available jockeys, a number of trainers were unable to declare riders by the prescribed time. Accordingly, Jockey D. Gill was a late engagement for the following horses and stewards took no further action against the respective trainers: Race 1, CRAIGLEA RELOAD, Race 2, CRAIGLEA HUSSY, Race 4, YOYO.
Race 1: Cheryl’s Boutique Maiden Plate – 1400 metres
1st – KOOLASACAT 2nd – LITTLE ELLIOT 3rd – CASINOJEAN 4th – MR GOLD
The saddle on UNREAL (A. Coome) shifted during its preliminary and the gelding had to be re-saddled behind the barriers.
Shortly after the start MAKE A MOVE (L. Morrison), which was slow to begin, was inconvenienced by CLUES (G. Kliese), which was taken out by UNREAL (A. Coome), which began awkwardly and shifted out.
A short distance after the start MR GOLD (F. Edwards) commenced to over-race in the early and middle stages.
Near the 200 metres MR GOLD (F. Edwards) commenced to hang in and had to be restrained off the heels of UNREAL (A. Coome).
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight CASINOJEAN (P. Cullen) was held up on the heels of MENDEZ (I. Toward) and unable to improve until approaching the 100 metres.
Race 2: Townsville Collectables Class 1 Handicap - 1300 Metres
1st – BRANDY BEAU 2nd - STAUNCH NORTH 3rd – AL SAMUI 4th – PASSIN’ THRU
On the way to the barriers the saddle on BEVERLY HILLS (A.Coome) slipped, resulting in the gelding having to be re-saddled behind the barriers.
AL SAMUI (P. Cullen) began awkwardly.
Rounding the home turn and in the home straight BEVERLY HILLS (A. Coome) was unable to obtain clear running and went to the line without being fully tested.
POSITIVE VIBES (K. Rockett) and OCTA DUCK (R. Ryan) were obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
Following the race Jockey J. Babarovich reported that he was concerned with the action of HAILING. A post-race veterinary examination of HAILING (J. Babarovich) did not reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned as to the performance of POSITIVE VIBES, Jockey K. Rockett stated that the gelding travelled well until near the 400 metres, however when placed under pressure failed to run on as anticipated and in his opinion was very disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of POSITIVE VIBES revealed that the gelding had pulled up in a slightly distressed state. Trainer Mr B. Snelling was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for POSITIVE VIBES prior to the gelding being permitted to race again. A swab sample was taken.
Race 3: The Exchange Hotel & Showbar 151 QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap - 1300 metres
1st – SPECIAL AND GRAND 2nd – TAT ZEPHYR 3rd – ZIP THE LIP 4th – GESTICULATION
When Jockey K. Rockett was to be overweight, Jockey D. Gill was substituted as the rider of CASHED UP BULLY. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Jockey Rockett and trainer’s representative Mr Ashford.
DEB’S HOPE (G. Kliese) began awkwardly and shortly after the start was tightened for room between GESTICULATION (L. Morrison) and CASHED UP BULLY (D. Gill), which shifted out.
TSUIMAI WARRIOR (J. Babarovich) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 300 metres TAT ZEPHYR (W. D’Avila) shifted in and made contact with CRAIGLEA MARLENA (P. Cullen) on two occasions, resulting in CRAIGLEA MARLENA having to be steadied. Jockey W. D’Avila was reprimanded and advised to show greater care.
Near the 100 metres TAT ZEPHYR (W. D’Avila) shifted out in an attempt to obtain clear running, forcing DEB’S HOPE (G. Kliese) out onto ZIP THE LIP and resulting in DEB’S HOPE having to be restrained. Jockey D’Avila was advised to ensure he is clear of other runners before shifting ground.
Approaching the winning post ZIP THE LIP (A. Coome) had to be steadied and shifted wider to avoid the heels of TAT ZEPHYR (W. D’Avila), which shifted out under pressure. In the incident EXAGGERATION (A. Merritt) was also forced wider. Jockey D’Avila was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of DEB’S HOPE Jockey G. Kliese stated that after beginning from a wide barrier the gelding took up a prominent position and travelled well until the home turn. Jockey Kliese said that when placed under pressure at the entrance to the home straight DEB’S HOPE improved into the race, however quickly compounded and in his opinion was disappointing. Jockey Kliese added that DEB’S HOPE was having a quick back-up from its most recent start and this may not have been beneficial for the gelding. Trainer J. Ryan agreed with Jockey Kliese’s assessment that the quick back-up may not have been in the best interests of the gelding. Ms Ryan informed stewards that it was now her intention to give DEB’S HOPE a freshen up prior to its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of DEB’S HOPE did not reveal any significant abnormalities.

The start was delayed when GRANITY (K. Rockett) had to be re-saddled prior to loading into the barriers.
CAPITAL FLOW (P. Cullen) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 400 metres CAPITAL FLOW (P. Cullen) improved onto the heels of GRANITY (K. Rockett) and had to be steadied.
DAHARA PRIZE (M. Elliott) raced wide throughout.
Race 6: Townsville Bulletin Winter Cup Open Handicap – 2100 metres
1st – FLYBEFREE 2nd – MOB RULE 3rd – POPNAE 4th – VITREOUS
BREAKERS PATH (M. Elliott), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly.
In the early stages ABUSKER (A. Merritt) raced wide until near the 1300 metres, where Jockey Merritt allowed the gelding to improve forward and race outside the leader.
Leaving the 400 ABUSKER (A. Merritt) commenced to lose ground, resulting in MOB RULE (P. Cullen) becoming very awkward on the heels of that gelding and shifting out slightly to avoid the heels of ABUSKER. In doing so MOB RULE made contact with the hindquarters of VITREOUS (L. Morrison), which became unbalanced and shifted out, resulting in BREAKERS PATH (M. Elliott), which was racing back and to the outside of VITREOUS (L. Morrison), clipping that horse’s heels, blundering and almost dislodging its rider, Jockey M. Elliott. As stewards could not attribute responsibility for the incident to any one rider, no action was taken against any rider. Ms O. Cairns, trainer of ABUSKER was advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination of ABUSKER did not reveal any abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of BREAKERS PATH did not reveal any abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of VITREOUS revealed that the gelding was lame in the off hind leg. Trainer A. Near the 600 metres COMMON OBJECTIVE (K. Rockett), when racing in restricted room to the inside of VANTABULOUS (I. Toward), which shifted in slightly, also shifted in and away from that runner, made contact with the running rail and lost ground.
