SO PRETENTIOUS sustained a cut under the chin en route to the course. At the request of connections the mare was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and acting on his advice stewards ordered the withdrawal of SO PRETENTIOUS at 12.30 p.m.
Near the 1000 metres BLAME GAME (W. D’Avila) was momentarily tightened for room and forced to ease to avoid the heels of ROTHSCHILD LAD (G. Cullen) which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey Cullen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 2: www.townsvilleturfclub.com.au 2YO Maiden Handicap - 1000 Metres
1st – MCCONACHY 2nd - SWEET ASA ROSE 3rd – HOT SAGA 4th – CRAIGLEA OPAL
RIPPER NIPPER (D. Missen) and MOON PALACE (A. Merritt) were slow to begin.
Near the 800 metres HOT SAGA (I. Toward) and MAKING HEADLINES (S. Kaya) brushed, resulting in MAKING HEADLINES shifting in abruptly and making contact with LADY SAGA (D. Hayse)
Rounding the home turn MOON PALACE (A. Merritt) hung out.
Near the 300 metres MAKING HEADLINES (S. Kaya) shifted out to obtain clear running and bumped BELLE I AM (M. Elliott).
Approaching the 200 metres MAKING HEADLINES (S. Kaya) and MORE THAN CHARLIE (G. Kliese) made contact when both horses shifted ground. As a result MORE THAN CHARLIE became unbalanced and had to be steadied.
MAKING HEADLINES (S. Kaya) raced greenly throughout.
Race 3: Wanless Enviro Services Maiden Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – PEARSON 2nd – LA LIONESSE 3rd – TAIYO SILVER AWAY 4th – CARE TO SHARE
The start was delayed slightly when PEARSON (A. Coome) had to be re-saddled behind the barriers.
SEQUALO SUZIE (F. Edwards) was slow to begin.
ROCKYFAME (App. A. Holt) blundered at the start.
App. J. Kuskopf advised stewards that it had been her intention to obtain a forward position on CARE TO SHARE, however after riding the filly along in the early stages she was unable to obtain a forward position and elected to take hold of her mount and consequently got further back in the field than she had anticipated.
Race 4: Suncorp Bank Agribusiness Benchmark Handicap 70 – 1000 metres
1st – PENSKI MATERIAL 2nd – CRAIGLEA GEE TEE 3rd – JUDICIAL 4th – SPEED SECRT/TEZUMA (DH)
Trainer T. Snelling reported that PENSKI MATERIAL was showing signs of being in season. Public announcements were made accordingly.
Near the 700 metres SUN WARRIOR (App. N. Yadi) was momentarily forced to race in restricted room between CRAIGLEA GEE TEE (App. B. Swaffer) and PENSKI MATERIAL (App. J. Kuskopf), which shifted in marginally. A short distance later CRAIGLEA GEE TEE shifted out and made contact with SUN WARRIOR, which commenced to hang out and was forced to check to avoid the heels of PENSKI MATERIAL. Whilst stewards noted that the check to SUN WARRIOR was of some significance, they were unable to attribute blame to either Apprentice Swaffer or Apprentice Kuskopf. In the circumstances no action was taken.
A post-race veterinary examination of SUN WARRIOR revealed that the horse had sustained speedy cuts to both hind legs and was suffering from the thumps. Trainer F. Wieland was advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to SUN WARRIOR being permitted to race again.
App. J. Kuskopf was fined $300 under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on PENSKI MATERIAL in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100 metres.
Race 5: Dillon Architects Class 1 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – SAVANNAH GOLD 2nd – EIREANN 3rd – COLOURADO 4th – SWEET SONG
After being placed in the barriers AQUALITA (I. Toward) became fractious, broke through, dislodged Jockey I. Toward and galloped a lap of the course. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of AQUALITA at 3.55 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on AQUALITA be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:
3¢ in the dollar for the win, SAVANNAH GOLD
10¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner SAVANNAH GOLD
9¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, EIREANN
9¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, SWEET SONG
A post-race veterinary examination of AQUALITA revealed that the mare had sustained lacerations to the near hind fetlock. Trainer Mr A. Ryan was advised that he must obtain a barrier certificate and a veterinary clearance for AQUALITA prior to the mare being permitted to race again.
Rounding the home turn MISS BRAVEHEART (App E. Ljung), which had a tendency to hang out, shifted out and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of EIREANN (F. Edwards).
In the early part of the home straight NOVA ROCKS (M. Elliott), which had a tendency to lay in, made contact with EIREANN (F. Edwards). NOVA ROCKS then shifted out abruptly, forcing EXCELLENT ELITE (A. Dykes) to steady to avoid the heels of that runner. ALUCARD (A. Coome), which was following, was also forced to steady as a result.
Stewards questioned Jockey F. Edwards as to the tactics adopted on EIREANN, in particular in relation to his riding of the filly in the early part of the home straight. Jockey Edwards stated that EIREANN began only fairly and from his wide barrier he elected to obtain a position closer to the running rail towards the rear of the field. Jockey Edwards advised stewards that the filly failed to quicken rounding the home turn and consequently he elected to ride EIREANN for luck and attempt to obtain an inside run, rather than take up a trailing position behind NOVA ROCKS (M. Elliott) wider on the track. Jockey Edwards added that at a point near the 200 metres a run presented to the inside of NOVA ROCKS when that horse shifted out abruptly. Jockey said that he was able to take that run, which gave EIREANN clear running for the remainder of the event. Jockey Edwards added that from the 200 metres EIREANN improved into the race and ran on strongly to the finish. Stewards noted the explanation.
A post-race veterinary examination of KILLER WASP (M. Usher), which performed somewhat disappointingly, did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 6: Hair Jam Class 2 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – MEREDITH 2nd – STAKHANOV 3rd – HEAVENLY VIEW 4th – FILLE VILAINE
Following the event Jockey D. Missen, the rider of SHEZA FALVELON, reported to Stewards that upon jumping, the saddle on the mare shifted back slightly and as a result SHEZA FALVELON commenced to race ungenerously in the early stages. Jockey Missen added that from the 800 metres the horse dropped the bit for a short distance and lost considerable ground of its own accord. Jockey Missen advised stewards that once the mare was able to obtain a clear run at the tail of the field, it commenced to race more tractably and in the home straight made good ground and found the line strongly.
Race 7: DCM Electrical Class 3 Plate – 1400 metres
1st – LADRETTO 2nd – MUKTASHEF 3rd – MISS MAGIC CHINE 4th - MR GIFFORD
BLACK SEQUIN (App. E. Ljung) refused to load into the barriers. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the mare at 5.04 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on BLACK SEQUIN be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:
2¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, LADRETTO
3¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, LADRETTO
3¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, MUKTASHEF
2¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, MR GIFFORD
Trainer Mr G. Sewell advised stewards that that was now his recommendation to retire the mare. Nevertheless stewards advised Mr Sewell that if BLACK SEQUIN was to race again, it will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a barrier trial.
BREAK OF DAWN (M. Usher) stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground. Stewards issued a warning against the barrier manners of BREAK OF DAWN.
MR GIFFORD (App. A. Gifford) was slow into stride.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
