LATE RIDING CHANGES:
When Jockey S. Pawsey was injured at the Innisfail meeting on Saturday and unable to fulfil his engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Jockey Pawsey was advised that he must furnish a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.
Race 1: - Hotel Herbert QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – SHEKOU 2nd – ROCKET BILLY REBEL 3rd – DAZZLUNA 4th – CHARLIE’S LASS
In the early stages ROCKET BILLY REBEL (A. Coome) was caught wide and consequently near the 900 metres was restrained to take up a position one off the running rail.
Race 2: - The Avenues Tavern 3-Y-O Handicap – 1200 Metres
1st – SIZZLELON 2nd - TUTUDUMONDE 3rd – SOME JOY 4th – SURAH SURAH
Jockey M. Elliott was reprimanded under A.R. 142 for failing to weigh in on the 5th placegetter, ALO MAGIC.
SOME JOY (F. Edwards) was held up and unable to obtain clear running from the 300 metres until a point near the 150 metres, where he obtained a narrow run to the inside of SIZZLELON (App. K. Grace).
App. K. Grace was reminded of his obligation under A.R. 137A(4)(b) not to use his whip in an action that raises his arm above shoulder height.
When afforded the opportunity to explain the performance of MR RISKY, Jockey I. Toward stated that the gelding travelled well in the run however rounding the home turn raced in somewhat restricted room, so he elected to shift the gelding wider to obtain clear running over the concluding stages. Jockey Toward said that, whilst the performance may have seemed to be disappointing on paper, given the fact that MR RISKY was coming from a last-start Maiden class win at Mackay into a strong 3-Year-Old Handicap today, he was not entirely disappointed with the performance.
Race 3: - Delta O(ffice Solutions Class Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – FAINT PRAISE 2nd – MADE IN AMERICA 3rd – KASH SPOT 4th – SLIPNOT
Near the 1100 metres MADE IN AMERICA (J. Felix) and VIVAREA (A. Dykes) were tightened for room when racing between BONGIORNO (D. Hayse) and SLIPNOT (G. Kliese), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. As a result VIVAREA lost ground.
Approaching the 600 metres BUCASIA BEACH (P. Cullen) improved onto the heels of BLUEPRINT LADY (M. Elliott) and had to be steadied.
From the 500 metres BUCASIA BEACH (P. Cullen) was held up when disappointed for a run between BLUEPRINT LADY (M. Elliott) and THE PAPARAZZI (L. Smith) and was shifted out to obtain clear running shortly after straightening for home.
Jockey G. Kliese was reprimanded under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(i) for using his whip on SLIPNOT in a forehand manner in consecutive strides prior to the 100 metres.
Jockey I. Toward was reprimanded under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on RUNABOUT in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100 metres.
Stewards questioned Jockey L. Smith in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of THE PAPARAZZI. Jockey Smith advised that the gelding sweated up prior to the event, which may have been to its detriment. Jockey Smith stated that the gelding travelled well during the event, however when placed under pressure from the 400 metres failed to respond and was somewhat disappointing. Trainer B. Williams expressed his disappointment with the performance of the gelding. Mr Williams noted that today THE PAPARAZZI may not have been suited by having to carry a 58 kg impost and in his opinion THE PAPARAZZI may not have backed up from its run at Townsville 7 days prior to today’s event.
When asked about the performance of EIREANN, Jockey F Edwards advised that he had been instructed to ride the filly off the speed and allow it to finish off the race as best as possible. Jockey Edwards said that EIREANN was under pressure from the 700 metres, failed to run on in the home straight as he had expected and proved disappointing. Trainer E. Sewell also expressed disappointment with the performance of the filly today, which he attributed to the filly racing perhaps a little flat and being second up from a spell. Mr Sewell further stated that he will consider adding either winkers or blinkers to the filly’s approved gear prior to its next race start. Mr Sewell undertook to advise stewards if anything was amiss with EIREANN in the days following the event.
Stewards afforded Jockey M. Elliott the opportunity to explain the seemingly poor performance of BLUEPRINT LADY. Jockey Elliott stated that the mare travelled well throughout the event, however when placed under pressure from the 500 metres failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing in the run to the finish. Trainer G. Dickson said that the mare had been working well in preparation for today’s event and as such he expected a forward showing and was disappointed with the horse’s performance. Mr Dickson added that he will consult the owners in relation to the current preparation of the mare prior to making a determination as to its future racing program.
Race 4: – VVAA Maiden Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – ARIADNE 2nd – MIO GEM 3rd – WINDSOR GOLD 4th – ROCK MELON
ABSOLUTE DESTINY (P. Cullen) bounded in the air at the start.
ZOZUQUALO (L. Smith) began awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 1000 metres ROYAL BAR (S. Wilson), which was racing keenly, shifted out and made contact with ABSOLUTE DESTINY (P. Cullen).
After being caught wide in the early stages SANDBAR JACK (App. C. Schmidt) was ridden forward and obtained a leading position near the 900 metres.
Leaving the 800 metres ESCONDEE (F. Edwards), which was racing keenly, improved onto the heels of ZOZUQUALO (L. Smith) and was forced to steady.
Shortly after passing the winning post SANDBAR JACK (App. C. Schmidt) made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced for a short distance.
Race 5: – Morleys Funerals Class 3 Plate – 1000 metres
1st – LYNDA’S NEVER LATE 2nd – ARCATRAN 3rd – HEAVENLY VIEW 4th – CHUBBY CHIPMUNK
SOLIDIFY (I. Toward) began awkwardly, blundered and lost ground. As a result of the incident Jockey I. Toward lost the use of his nearside iron for a short distance. Subsequent to the event stewards questioned Jockey Toward in regard to the seemingly disappointing performance of SOLIDIFY. Jockey Toward advised that as a result of the incident at the start, the gelding settled much further back in the field than he had anticipated. Jockey Toward added that, given that the race was over 1000 metres, the gelding was unable to make up sufficient ground during the event to be competitive in the run to the finish. Jockey Toward further noted that SOLIDIFY did not feel entirely comfortable in its action at various stages during the event, which he attributed to the incident at the start. A post-race veterinary examination of SOLIDIFY did not reveal any significant abnormalities at that time. Trainer Mr G. Wehlow undertook to advise stewards should anything be amiss with the gelding in the days following the event.
Leaving the 600 metres EUREKA DUBAI (D. Hayse) and BOOM SHA LA (L. Smith) were both tightened for room between MAKE A DEAL (A. Coome) and SUNSETS ON FIRE (App. J. Kuskopf), which shifted out, and as a result were taken wider on the track.
Near the 50 metres ARCATRAN (S. Wilson) shifted out under pressure.
At the 50 metres SUNSETS ON FIRE (App. J. Kuskopf) was forced to ease to avoid the heels of BOOM SHA LA (L. Smith), which shifted out under pressure.
Race 6: – TPI Association North Queensland Cup Open Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – STRATO MOSTRO 2nd – CASH ATTACK 3rd – OUR BOY LUKAS 4th – MOB RULE
Near the 1300 metres COMMON OBJECTIVE (J. Dickinson) was momentarily forced to ease to avoid the heels of BELLASPIRIT (F. Edwards), which shifted in when not completely clear. BOLD TROJAN (W. D’Avila), which was following, was also forced to shift out at that stage of the event.
At about the 1100 metres BOLD TROJAN (W. D’Avila) was awkwardly placed on the heels of MOB RULE (D. Simmons), shifted out and as a result raced 3 wide for the remainder of the event when CASH ATTACK (P. Cullen) improved to its inside.
From the 500 metres until a point near the 200 metres OUR BOY LUKAS (A. Coome) was held up and unable to gain clear running.
When afforded the opportunity to explain the performance of BOLD TROJAN, Jockey W. D’Avila advised that when the pace of the race slackened near the 1200 metres he was forced to shift out wider on the track, and again near the 1100 metres he was inconvenienced and as a result raced wide from that point. Jockey D’Avila added that thereafter the gelding never travelled comfortably and when placed under pressure from the 400 metres failed to respond to his riding, however in the circumstances he was not entirely disappointed with today’s performance.
Race 7: - Townsville RSL Open Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – JABIRU DREAMING 2nd – WHITSUNDAY EXPRESS 3rd – DOYADEAL 4th – MAZUKA
Acting on veterinary advice that CHEVAL ARGENTE had injured itself in the float en route to the course and was unfit to take its place in the field, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 8.40 a.m.
Near the 800 metres MAZUKA (W. D’Avila) and WHITSUNDAY EXPRESS (S. Wilson) were momentarily placed in restricted room to the inside of JABIRU DREAMING (M. Cullen), which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey M. Cullen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
