SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: Mackay 6th July 2013

Race 4: Chaptech Benchmark 79 Handicap – 1100 metres

Stewards sought an explanation from App. K. Grace of his riding of EIGHT PIECES. App. Grace stated that from a wide barrier he was forced to race wide in the early and middle stages, App. Grace said that he attempted to restrain EIGHT PIECES for a short distance in an endeavour to obtain a position closer to the running rail during the early stages of the event. While stewards were of the opinion that App. Grace’s riding in the early stages of the event had not fallen below the required standard, they were of the opinion that he should have shown greater initiative and made a greater effort to restrain EIGHT PIECES than he had on this occasion, which would have enabled him to take up a position trailing ASSIMILATOR (D. Simmons).

Race 1: - RSD Plumbing Maiden Plate – 1200 metres
1st – PACHAMAMA 2nd – SANDBAR JACK 3rd – MIO GEM 4th – RUM RATION

At the start PACHAMAMA (G. Kliese) was tightened for room between MIO GEM (lA. Coome) and SANDBAR JACK (App. J. Kuskopf), which jumped outwards.

Approaching the 1000 metres ZOZUQUALO (I. Toward), which was awkwardly placed on the heels of LITTLE ELLIOT (J. P. Stanley), shifted out taking ZEDAHEEL (J. Long) wider on the track. ZEDAHEEL then raced wide thereafter.

For the majority of the event MOLONGLE DREAM (App. E. Ljung) raced wide.

Stewards questioned Jockey A. Coome in relation to the tactics adopted on MIO GEM which settled towards the rear of the field, in contrast to its most recent starts when the gelding was ridden in a forward position. Jockey Coome advised that MIO GEM began from the outside barrier today and in his opinion failed to muster the necessary speed to obtain a forward position, and consequently he elected to take hold of the gelding and settle towards the rear of the field. Jockey Coome added that had he not elected to take that course of action, MIO GEM would have been forced to race wide in the early and middle stages and he would have had to pressure the horse to obtain its customary forward position. Jockey Coome added that he was of the opinion that MIO GEM finished off its race better today when ridden from behind and he believed the gelding may be suited by being ridden in this fashion in future. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 2: - Forkliftit Class 6 Handicap – 1400 Metres
1st – COUNTER IZE 2nd - JUST HUSTLED 3rd – DAB TOUCH 4th – SAFARI

At the start SAFARI (I. Toward) was tightened for room between BEEBEESDUEL (G. Kliese) and JUST HUSTLED (D. Hayse), both of which shifted ground.

I’M HOT (M. Cullen) raced wide throughout.

For a short distance rounding the home turn SAFARI (I. Toward) was held up on the heels of BARELY AN ANGEL (M. Elliott) and was forced to shift to the inside to obtain clear running.

Race 3: - NQ Equine Specialist Service Townsville Dollars QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – TUTUDUMONDE 2nd – RHYTHM ‘N’ RAP 3rd – LUCKY US 4th – MILITARY TIME

At the start COURT AFFAIRE (J. Felix) was tightened for room between DIURNAL TIGER (App. J. Kuskopf) and MILITARY TIME (App. E. Ljung), both of which shifted ground. As a result App. Ljung became unbalanced in the saddle for a short distance.

KISS ME QUICK (lS. Wilson) was slow to begin.

After being caught 3 wide in the early and middle stages App. K. Grace allowed SIZZLELON to stride forward and obtain a position outside the leader near the 600 metres.

In the middle stages of the event DIURNAL TIGER (App. J. Kuskopf) hung out.

Rounding the home turn RHYTHM ‘N’ RAP (F. Edwards) was held up for clear running and near the 400 metres blundered after improving onto the heels of SIZZLELON (App. K. Grace).
A short distance later RHYTHM ‘N’ RAP shifted out to obtain clear running, resulting in LUCKY US (App. S. Egan), which was following, being forced to steady.

Stewards questioned App. K. Grace and stable representative Ms M. Chillemi in relation to the disappointing performance of SIZZLELON. App. Grace stated that, from his wide barrier, in the early and middle stages he was caught wide and therefore elected to ride the gelding forward to obtain a position closer to the running rail. App. Grace said that after obtaining a position outside the leader, SIZZLELON relaxed and raced comfortably until a point rounding the home turn, where he placed the gelding under pressure, however became awkward in its action for a short distance and failed to run on in the straight as he had expected. App. Grace advised that in the circumstances in his opinion SIZZLELON had raced disappointingly. Ms Chillemi said that Apprentice Grace was instructed to ride SIZZLELON in a midfield position if possible. Ms Chillemi added that, though she was somewhat disappointed with the performance of SIZZLELON today, taking into account the instructions given to App. Grace and the fact that he was required to pressure the gelding in the middle stages to obtain a forward position, she was not surprised that the gelding tired over the concluding stages. Ms Chillemi undertook to advise trainer Mr R. Chillemi should anything be amiss with SIZZLELON in the days following the event. A post-race veterinary examination of SIZZLELON did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 4: – Equine Solutions Putting Performance First Class 4 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – FAINT PRAISE 2nd – STROM THE RHYTHM 3rd – MISS MAGIC CHINE 4th – CHUBY CHIPMUNK

During its preliminary FATAL AFFAIR dislodged App. J. Kuskopf and galloped for a short distance before being restrained. App. Kuskopf suffered a seemingly harmless fall. Upon arrival behind the barriers FATAL AFFAIR was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.

At the start SHOW US YA IVORYS (F. Edwards) was hampered by CHOKKTORQUE (M. Elliott), which shifted outwards.

Near the 900 metres FAINT PRAISE (A. Coome) was steadied to avoid the heels of FATAL AFFAIR (App. J. Kuskopf).

Leaving the 100 metres SKITTER (G. Kliese) was tightened for room and forced to ease when racing between CHOKKTORQUE (M. Elliott) and WHETSTONE (J. Brown), which shifted in marginally.

Jockey J. Brown was reminded of her obligation to ride her mounts out right to the finish.

Race 5: – Caltex Yabulu Magnetic Island Mile Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – STRATO MOSTRO 2nd – MIGHTY MITE 3rd – SEAFIGHT 4th – MOB RULE

Near the 1300 metres MOB RULE (A. Coome) improved onto the heels of SANDWOOD (D. Hayse) and was forced to steady. As a result, MIGHTY MITE (App. E. Ljung), which was following, was forced to shift out to avoid the heels of MOB RULE.

Near the 1000 metres STRATO MOSTRO (G. Kliese) was tightened for room and forced to check when racing to the inside of MIGHTY MITE (App. E. Ljung), which shifted in whilst over-racing, despite the efforts of its rider.
At approximately the 600 metres STRATO MOSTRO (G. Kliese) was forced to steady after improving onto the heels of SANDWOOD (D. Hayse). STRATO MOSTRO was then held up from that point until the early stages of the home straight and was then disappointed for a run between KNUTE (J. Felix), which shifted out marginally near the 200m, and MOB RULE (A. Coome). As a result, STRATO MOSTRO was forced to shift out and obtained clear running near the 100 metres.

Race 6: – Talbot Heatley Lightning Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ALBERTIQUE 2nd – MAZUKA 3rd – JABIRU DREAMING 4th – FAST ‘N’ FEROCIOUS

Trainer B. Williams was fined $100 under L.R. 67 for failing to declare App. E. Ljung as the rider for PEOPLE’S CHOICE by the prescribed time.

At the start LYNDA’S NEVER LATE (M. Elliott) shifted out and made contact with PEOPLE’S CHOICE (App. E. Ljung). A short distance later LYNDA’S NEVER LATE was tightened for room between PEOPLE’S CHOICE and MAZUKA (D. Hayse), which shifted out.

On jumping OUTSTANDINGLY (J. Brown) was hampered by DAILIKA (App. J. Kuskopf), which shifted out.

Near the 700 metres MAZUKA (D. Hayse) was tightened for room and forced to ease when awkwardly placed on the heels of CHEVAL ARGENTE (G. Kliese), as a result of WHITSUNDAY EXPRESS (S. Wilson) shifting in when not completely clear.

At about the 500 metres FAST ‘N’ FEROCIOUS (W. D’Avila) shifted out, resulting in SURAH SURAH (J. Felix), which was racing to its outside, being forced wider on the track.

Rounding the home turn MAZUKA (D. Hayes) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so bumped WHITSUNDAY EXPRESS (S. Wilson).

When afforded the opportunity to explain his riding of FANGLES in the early and middle stages, Jockey J. P. Stanley advised that the gelding began well, however in his opinion, due to its wide barrier draw, would have been unable to muster the necessary speed to cross the runners drawn to his inside to obtain a leading position. Jockey Stanley added that he elected to allow runners to his inside to improve forward of him, in an endeavour to obtain a position closer to the running rail. Jockey Stanley said that passing the 800 metres he was still positioned very wide on the track and therefore he elected to restrain FANGLES to take up a trailing position behind FAST ‘N’ FEROCIOUS (W. D’Avila), which enabled to occupy a position three wide with cover. Jockey Stanley further advised that when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight FANGLES ran on only fairly. The explanation was noted.

Race 7: - Audi Centre Townsville Benchmark 65 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – STARLISTIC 2nd – SUNSETS ON FIRE 3rd – BRAVE PALATINSK 4th – MASTER INVADER

PENOR’S PRIDE was a late scratching, at 2.20 p.m., by order of the stewards acting on confirmed advice from trainer R. McLachlan that, due to transport difficulties, the horse would not be able to arrive on course by the prescribed time.

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey W. D’Avila, the rider of BRAVE PALATINSK which finished 3rd, and Apprentice S. Egan, the rider of STRATEGIC WEAPON which finished 5th, to view the official patrol films with a view to lodging objections. Having done so, both riders elected not to lodge an objection and stewards declared correct weight on the judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey Dykes pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 350 metres he permitted STARLISTIC to shift out when not clear of BRAVE PALATINSK (W. D’Avila), which was tightened for room between STARLISTIC and THE RUSTLA (I. Toward) and as a result was forced to check.
Jockey Dykes was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 meetings, to commence at midnight on 11th July 2013, up to and including midnight on 20th July 2013.

Near the 150 metres STRATEGIC WEAPON (App. S. Egan) was forced to steady to avoid the heels of STARLISTIC (A. Dykes), which shifted in.

Approaching the 100 metres THE RUSTLA (I. Toward) was momentarily tightened for room between MAGIC COUNTRY (App. K. Grace) and STARLISTIC, which shifted out marginally.
