Race 1: - Magic Millions QTIS Sale 17 & 18 March Open Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – FOUR IRON 2nd – ASSERTIVE ALBERT 3rd – MEREDITH 4th – MAROON BELLS

Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded to Dead (5).

There were no racing incidents.

Race 2: - Mike Carney Toyota Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap – 1200 Metres
1st – TRIVIAL 2nd - LAKE VERMONT 3rd – HILTON MISS 4th – DARING LIGHT

HILTON MISS (G. Kliese), which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground.

At the start LADY ISLES (D. Hayse) shifted out and inconvenienced DARING LIGHT (S. Wilson).

In the early stages LYCEAN (W. D’Avila) over-raced.

When the tempo of the race slowed passing the 900 metres, HENASAR (F. Edwards) improved onto the heels of MANUMIT (App. J. Orman), was obliged to shift out and then raced wide for the remainder of the event. Shortly thereafter LAKE VERMONT (P. Cullen) improved onto the heels of RUBY’S SONG (J. Felix), was obliged to shift out, then raced wide for the remainder of the event.

As a consequence of the tempo being steadied near the 900 metres LADY ISLES and DARING LIGHT also over-raced for a short distance.

Rounding the home turn and for the majority of the home straight MANUMIT hung in, resulting in App. Orman having to stop riding and straighten his mount over the concluding stages.

Upon returning to scale Jockey G. Kliese reported that after losing ground at the start he was obliged to take up a rearward position on HILTON MISS, and rounding the home turn he was forced to steady when held up for clear running. Jockey Kliese added that the slow tempo of the race had a detrimental effect on the horse’s performance today.

When questioned as to the improved performance of TRIVIAL, Trainer A. Cameron stated that he was not disappointed with the filly’s first-up start, at Bowen on 5th October 2013, however he had been disappointed with the filly’s second-up performance, at Home Hill on 2nd November 2013, when the filly was found to be in season. Mr Cameron added that TRIVIAL had performed well in an unofficial trial leading into today’s event, on the basis of which he had expected an improved performance today. The explanation was noted.

Race 3: - Davis Family Group Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – TREASURE SON 2nd – SOLE SURVIVOR 3rd ALDREN 4th – GRAUMAN

GRAUMAN (W. D’Avila) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start ALDREN (P. Cullen) was tightened for room between TREASURE SON (S. Wilson), which shifted in, and STRITIQUE (App. S. Wiseman), which was taken out by REDLANDER (App. K. Aho). As a result ALDREN had to be checked and lost ground. REDLANDER then shifted back in and bumped CHOMARU (App. J. Kuskopf). A short distance later REDLANDER had to be steadied when tightened for room between CHOMARU and STRITIQUE.

Approaching the 900 metres CRUSADER GOLD (App. J. Orman) and BEKINDTOYOURMOTHER (J. Felix) had to be steadied and lost ground when tightened for room between SOLE SURVIVOR (T. Bannon) and CHOMARU, which shifted in initially before being taken inwards by STRITIQUE, which was taken in by GRAUMAN. MORE THAN CHARLIE (S. Pawsey) , which was following, had to be steadied and lost ground as a consequence. App. Kuskopf was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances for causing the initial tightening to CRUSADER GOLD and BEKINDTOYOURMOTHER. Jockey D’Avila was issued with a severe reprimand for not affording sufficient racing room to the runners to his inside.

Approaching the 800 metres STRITIQUE shifted out and inconvenienced ALDREN.

Leaving the 800 metres STRITIQUE was inconvenienced and had to be steadied when tightened for room by GRAUMAN, which shifted in.

Upon straightening for home ALDREN shifted in under pressure and bumped GRAUMAN.

Leaving the 300 metres CHOMARU had to be eased when placed in restricted room between SOLE SURVIVOR (T. Bannon) and GRAUMAN, both of which shifted ground. CHOMARU was then held up until leaving the 200 metres.

GRAUMAN, STRITIQUE and ALDREN raced wide throughout the event.

Stewards questioned Jockey P. Cullen as to the tactics adopted on ALDREN, specifically as to whether or not there was an opportunity for him to take up a position with cover at the rear of the field, after suffering interference shortly after the start. Jockey Cullen said that ALDREN ‘s normal pattern of racing has been to take up a position on the speed and, given today’s pattern of racing and the slow tempo in the early stages, he was of the view that he would be able to obtain a forward position. Jockey Cullen added that when he attempted to improve forward passing the 900 metres ALDREN suffered interference, which in the early stages prevented him from finding a position with cover and forced him to race extremely wide for the remainder of the event. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 4: – Horan & Bird QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – CRAIGLEA PLATINUM 2nd – MODEL TO EXCEED 3rd – CRYSTAL MISSILE 4th – BORN TO FIRE

As the start was effected AVIATOR GIRL (S. Pawsey) bounded in the air and lost ground.

CRYSTAL MISSILE (T. Bannon) began awkwardly and shortly thereafter was forced to race in restricted room between NEVER CONFIRMED (F. Edwards) and DON’T TELL PETE (J. Felix), which shifted out.

Approaching the 900 metres CRYSTAL MISSILE continued to be inconvenienced when forced to race in restricted room between BORN TO FIRE (D. Hayse) and NEVER CONFIRMNED for a considerable distance.

Over the concluding stages BORN TO FIRE shifted out under pressure.

CRYSTAL MISSILE raced wide throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 5: – Parry Nissan “Pathfinder” BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – DE LA SOUL 2nd – MANALUTE 3rd – FROG HOLLOW 4th – MISS MAGIC CHINE

MILITARY TIME (F. Edwards) and TWIZZLE (S. Pawsey) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 500 metres MISS MAGIC CHINE (App. J. Orman) shifted out to improve to the outside of DIVIDED (S. Wilson), forcing CRASHING (App. J. Kuskopf) wider.

Rounding the home turn DE LA SOUL (D. Hayse) and FROG HOLLOW (G. Kliese) were held up and unable to gain clear running.

WHYDON’TYALIKEME (J. Felix) raced wide throughout.

When questioned as to the seemingly disappointing performance of CRASHING, App. J. Kuskopf stated that she was obliged to pressure the gelding in the early stages to obtain a position with cover after leaving the 800 metres. Whilst App. Kuskopf felt that this may have contributed to the poor performance of CRASHING, nonetheless she was disappointed with the gelding’s overall performance. App. Kuskopf added that CRASHING travelled comfortably in the middle stages but failed to respond to her riding in the home straight. Trainer E. Sewell expressed his disappointment with the gelding’s performance and indicated that in future CRASHING may be better suited when ridden by a senior rider. A post-race veterinary examination of CRASHING did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 6: – Ritzco Homes Class 3 Plate – 1630 metres
1st – LOFTY’S MATE 2nd – ZAHMATAS ADJOURNED 3rd – CARNEGIE HALL 4th – WEATHERVANE

SNIP PINS LASS (D. Simmons) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer J. Manzelmann was advised that a warning will be placed on the mare’s barrier manners.

PAYTEEVEE (App. S. Wiseman) also stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost considerable ground, then attempted to buck in the early stages of the event. Trainer J. Manzelmann was advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners and that PAYTEEVEE must perform satisfactorily in two unofficial trials as a result of its racing manners in the early stages.

BANDIDAS (F. Edwards) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 800 metres DENONATE (S. Pawsey) shifted out and then raced three wide from that point onwards.

Passing the 600 metres PAYTEEVEE (App. S. Wiseman) shifted wider to improve and raced four wide thereafter.

Leaving the 600 metres WEATHERVANE (T. Bannon) had to be steadied from the heels of ZAHMATAS ADJOURNED (App. J. Orman)

SMART STUFF (App. J. Kuskopf) raced wide throughout.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on WEATHERVANE, in particular between the 600 metres and the 200 metres, Jockey T. Bannon stated that she was instructed to take up a handy position. Jockey Bannon added further that WEATHERVANE travelled comfortably in the early stages but was inclined to over-race at the heels of ZAHMATAS ADJOURNED passing the 600 metres. Jockey Bannon stated that she elected not to shift out to improve at this point because she was specifically instructed not to ride WEATHERVANE vigorously until a point leaving the 200 metres, as the gelding has only a short sprint. Jockey Bannon explained that it was for this reason that she did not place WEATHERVANE under pressure in the early stages of the home straight. Trainer C. Smith confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Bannon and advised stewards that at the horse’s most recent start, at Rockhampton, Jockey Bannon had shifted to the outside of the field upon straightening, at which point the gelding sprinted for only 150 metres and then peaked on its run. Whilst stewards noted the explanations, they advised Mr Smith that, should he wish to issue similar instructions in future, he must advise the stewards prior to the race so that public announcements can be made.

Race 7: - Victory Racing Plate Class 1 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – SLIPNOT 2nd – GLOUCESTER STORM 3rd – RUM RATION 4th – THE BIG SALAD

When Jockey G. Kliese was to be overweight Jockey F. Edwards was substituted as the rider of GLOUCESTER STORM. Jockey Kliese was fined $100 under A.R. 120(b).

RUM RATION (J. Felix), THE LIGHTWEIGHT (W. D’Avila), SHYCHENKA (P. Cullen) and ALITTLEBITOFDUEY (T. Bannon) were slow to begin.

In the middle stages NAGINI (App. K. Aho) over-raced.

SANDBAR JACK (J. Kuskopf) and THE LIGHTWEIGHT raced wide throughout.

Upon returning to scale Apprentice J. Orman reported that THE BIG SALAD hung outrounding the home turn, which allowed SLIPNOT to improve to his inside.
