SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: Townsville, Sunday, 27th April 2014:
Race 1: The Defence Forces Maiden Plate – 1000 metres
Jockey G. Watson was reprimanded under A.R. 137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he struck FRENCH JOY with the whip in a forehand manner 7 times prior to the 100 metres, 2 more than is permitted by the rule.
GENERAL
Stewards interviewed trainer Mr E. Covell relating to the training bona fides of all of his runners engaged in today’s meeting. Having considered all the evidence, and taking into account Mr Covell’s oral submissions, stewards accepted his explanation that he had full knowledge of the training preparation of those runners, inclusive of any treatment regime and trackwork.
Race 1: - Parry Nissan Raceday Coming Soon QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1000 metres
1st - CRAIGLEA IVY 2nd - VO TREASURE 3rd - RANGILA 4th - NEVETUS
The start was delayed when the ambulance was late arriving on course.
NEVETUS (S. Pawsey) began very awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and made heavy contact with GOLDEN PAGES (D. Hayse).
Passing the 900 metres ROUND MOUNTAIN GAL (S. Wilson) shifted in when not clear of RANGILA (G. Kliese), which was carried in onto GOLDEN PAGES, which was bumped and became awkwardly placed on the heels of NEVETUS. Jockey Wilson was severely reprimanded under A.R. 137(a) and advised to exercise more care.
In the early part of the straight VO TREASURE (D. Missen) had difficulty obtaining clear running.
When questioned regarding ROUND MOUNTAIN GAL leading today, Jockey S. Wilson explained that he had been instructed to ride the filly with cover, in accordance with its established racing pattern. However, after beginning particularly well, the filly commenced to over-race when being restrained, and rather than be obliged to race wide, he elected to allow ROUND MOUNTAIN GAL to stride forward and assume the lead, where the filly travelled only fairly for the remainder of the event.
Stewards questioned Jockey D. Missen regarding his riding of VO TREASURE, in particular as to whether there was an opportunity to improve into running between NEVETUS and the eventual winner, CRAIGLEA IVY (A. Coome) passing the 200 metres. Jockey Missen explained that after being held up in the early part of the straight he rode his mount outwards in an endeavour to obtain clear running. Jockey Missen was of the opinion that, rather than improve into a narrow run between NEVETUS and CRAIGLEA IVY, which was racing greenly, he would be better served by shifting to the outside of CRAIGLEA IVY, where he would be afforded an unimpeded run to the finish. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 2: - Last Chance to Join the TTC 100 Club 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap – 1000 Metres
1st – GREEN ANCHOR 2nd - WATCH THE RED 3rd – ZINGY GIRL 4th – DAYTONA ROAD
NIPPON CLIPPON (T. Bannon) was slow to begin and shortly after the start had to be checked when crowded for room between ZINGY GIRL (S. Wilson) and EREBUS (S. Pawsey), which was carried in by GREEN ANCHOR (G. Kliese). A short distance later EREBUS had to be steadied when racing tight between ZINGY GIRL and GREEN ANCHOR, which shifted in when not entirely clear. Jockey G. Kliese was severelyreprimanded under A.R. 137(a).
Passing the 700 metres WATCH THE RED (D Hayse), which was racing ungenerously, had to be eased when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GREEN ANCHOR, which shifted in when not quite clear. ZINGY GIRL, which was following, was hampered in consequence.
In the early part of the straight WATCH THE RED raced greenly.
Race 3: - Mr Rental Townsville Maiden Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – ILLUSIONS 2nd – CHARLIE’S MOMENT 3rd - GRAUMANN 4th – WINDSOR GOLD
At the start GYPSY VERY GOOD (D. Hayse) shifted in and made contact with CHARLIE’S MOMENT (D. Missen).
WINDSOR GOLD (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.
Passing the 1100 metres ILLUSIONS (G. Kliese) had to be eased when taken in towards the heels of KOOLKUNA BABE (A. Spinks) by CHARLIE’S MOMENT (D. Missen), which shifted in when not quite clear. Jockey Missen was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
For the majority of the event KOOLKUNA hung out and changed stride on a number of occasions. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly did not reveal any abnormalities.
On returning to scale Jockey T. Bannon reported that WINDSOR GOLD was held up and unable to obtain clear running until leaving the 100 metres.
Right at the winning post SUNNY CHIEF (S. Wilson) shifted in, despite the efforts of its rider, and crowded FRENCH JOY (G. Watson) onto the running rail, resulting in FRENCH JOY having to be checked.
CHARLIE’S MOMENT lost its offside front plate in running.
Race 4: – AON Risk Solutions Class 1 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – MANZANITA 2nd – ARTIVA 3rd – ROMAN PLEASURE 4th – ARTIVA
PATTO’S GIRL (S. Wilson) missed the start by 2 lengths.
RISE TO THE TOP (App. N. Yadi) began awkwardly with its head up and lost ground.
ELAY PRINCESS (G. Watson) and FLIGHT TO GLORY (P. Cullen) came together at the start.
In the early part of the straight DON’T THINK DO (S. Pawsey) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
In the home straight PALMERSTON NORTH (D. Simmons) raced in restricted room and was unable to be fully tested until leaving the 100 metres.
Jockey D. Hayse pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the 200 metres he allowed ROMAN PLEASURE to shift out when not clear of SHOTGUN BOOGIE (App. S. Wiseman), which was crowded for room and taken out into the running of FLIGHT TO GLORY (P. Cullen), contributing to that runner having to check. Jockey Hayse was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 5 Queensland meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday 10th May 2014, up to and including midnight on Saturday 17th May 2014.
Jockey G. Watson pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the 200 metres he allowed ELAY PRINCESS to shift in when not clear of PINE ISLAND (F. Edwards), which was carried inwards, contributing to FLIGHT TO GLORY being checked. Jockey Watson was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 2 NQ meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday 11th May 2014, up to and including midnight on 17th May 2041.
FLIGHT TO GLORY (P. Cullen), SCHOONER ROCK (G. Kliese) and MARKAZY (W. D’Avila) raced wide throughout.
Race 5: – Billie & Me, Style on Gregory BenchMark 75 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – SIZZLELON 2nd – QUEEN THYRA 3rd – LYNDA’S NEVER LATE 4th – ORIENTELLE
After arriving on course MAGIC COUNTRY, which had an old wound to the off hind leg, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.
TABASCO FORCE (D. Hayse) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 200 metres TABASCO FORCE, which was inclined to lay in, was momentarily awkwardly placed on the heels of CANHEDANCE (A. Spinks).
Over the final stages ORIENTELLE (App. K. Aho) was held up for clear running and went to the line without being fully tested.
Jockey P. Cullen was at a loss to explain the seemingly poor performance of DREAM’N’IGNITE. Jockey Cullen said that the mare travelled comfortably in the early stages but when placed under pressure from the 600 metres was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of DREAM’N’IGNITE revealed that the mare was lame in the near foreleg. Trainer O. Cullen was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to DREAM’N’IGNITE being permitted to race again.
Race 6: – Waltlec Electrical Open Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – CASTLE EXPRESS 2nd – DAMASHQUI 3rd – ROTHSCHILD LAD 4th – KOOLASACAT
On returning to scale App. B. Swaffer reported that the saddle on SERVIMOSS slipped forward passing the 800 metres, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
SERVIMOSS (App. B. Swaffer) and KOOLASACAT (S. Pawsey) were slow to begin.
When the pace was slow in the early stages MIGHTY MITE (App. J. Orman) pulled hard.
Rounding the turn near the 1400 metres TAT ZEPHYR (W. D’Avila) had to be steadied when racing tight between MIGHTY MITE and CASTLE EXPRESS (F. Edwards), both of which shifted ground.
When the tempo was slow in the middle stages KERCHINGS (T. Bannon) had to be continually steadied from the heels of runners in front.

ELOVACHILL (F. Edwards) was slow to begin.
Jockey W. D’Avila pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that passing the 200 metres he permitted PINK’N’BLUE to shift out when not clear of ELOVACHILL (F. Edwards), which was directed outwards and became awkwardly placed on the heels of MIN MIN MAN (G. Kliese). SKALATONIC (App. K. Aho), which was following, was hampered in consequence. Jockey D’Avila was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 NQ meetings, to commence at midnight on Saturday 10th May 2014, up to and including Sunday 18th May 2014.
