GENERAL:

Yesterday stewards conducted a number of stable inspections and obtained blood samples from a number of horses engaged in today’s feature races that will be sent for analysis. Members of the Integrity Regulatory Unit conducted stable inspections throughout the day, and no breaches of the Rules were detected.

Race 1: - Cheryl’s Boutique/Audi Centre Townsville QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – ONE BAR NONE 2nd - MAGAZINE MISS 3rd – NEVETUS 4th – TUNE UP WARRIOR 5th - ELEMENT OF CHANCE

Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the late declaration of Jockey D. Hayse as the rider of SCHNELLES PFERD, to enable them to obtain further information from the Trainers Service Centre.

On returning to scale Jockey G. Watson reported that after being slow to begin LET’S SEA failed to travel at any stage of the race and was non-competitive. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Ms M. Petrofski informed stewards that the filly will now be spelled. Nevertheless, she was told that a warning will be placed on the record of LET’S SEA for failing to be competitive and should it fail to improve at its next race start the filly will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.

NEVETUS (D. Simmons) began awkwardly and shortly thereafter was crowded between TUNE UP WARRIOR (N. Evans) and NAVAL BELLE (T. O’Hara), which was carried in by KAYAN (C. Whiteley).

ELEMENT OF CHANCE (S. Pawsey) was slow to begin.

MODEL TO EXCEED (J. P. Stanley) and SCHNELLES PFERD raced wide throughout.

Race 2: - Zinc 100.7 Julive Up & Coming Stayers BenchMark 70 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – DE LA DILO 2nd – KING OF THE FOREST 3rd - STOP CRYING 4th – JETSCAPE 5th - PAZZESCO

When Jockey L. Dillon was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties, Jockey N. Evans was substituted as the rider of SAVOUR THAT.

STOP CRYING (T. O’Hara) began awkwardly.

Shortly after the start MASSURI (A. Coome) shifted out and bumped PALMERSTON NORTH (D. Simmons).

Rounding the home turn ZIGURAT (S. Pawsey) attempted a narrow run to the inside of MASSURI, made contact with the hindquarters of that runner, which became unbalanced.

When questioned regarding her riding of STOP CRYING, Jockey T. O’Hara explained that she was instructed to ride the mare in a forward position, however after being crowded for room at the start she was able to obtain a prominent position behind the leaders, close to the running rail. Jockey O’Hara stated that passing winning post on the first occasion STOP CRYING made contact with the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground. She added that throughout the middle stages STOP CRYING travelled comfortably, however when runners improved around her she was obliged to race in a midfield position. Jockey O’Hara said also that approaching the 600 metres she attempted to ride her mount along and improve around the field, but when doing so she became awkwardly placed on the heels of the weakening FESTIVAL BALLET (A. Spinks) and consequently she attempted to improve back to the inside of that runner, however ZIGURAT (S. Pawsey) was able to obtain that run, resulting in STOP CRYING being further held up for clear running. Jockey O’Hara added further that after straightening for home she was able to shift her mount out to the centre of the track and obtain clear running, where the gelding finished the race off strongly.

In the early stages KING OF THE FOREST (C. Whiteley) raced keenly and was allowed to stride forward and assume the lead.

Race 3: - Michels Restaurant & Catering Class 3 Plate – 1400 metres
1st – HARD LIQUOR 2nd – ROWEINER 3rd - PERFECT KNOWLEDGE 4th – RISE TO THE TOP

Stewards acceded to a request by trainer D. Symons to allow HARD LIQUOR to race with winkers and public announcements were made accordingly. Stewards will follow up the matter with RISA.

After arriving behind the barriers ATHABASCA underwent a pre-race veterinary examination, at the request of its rider, Jockey S. Pawsey and was cleared to take its place in the field.

PRINCE DAN (A. Coome) was slow to begin.

For some distance approaching the first turn, near the 1000 metres, CHOMARU (P. Cullen) raced tight to the inside of HARD LIQUOR (T. Bannon), which was racing greenly at that stage. Leaving the 1000 metres HARD LIQUOR shifted in and away from INSIDE PAGE (D. Missen), which was bumped by KING MAGNUSSON (F. Edwards) and taken inwards, resulting in CHOMARU having to be checked. Jockey T. Bannon was advised that in similar circumstances she would be expected to take greater care of her fellow riders.

In the early and middle stages PERFECT KNOWLEDGE (T. O’Hara) raced keenly.

Race 4: – Parry Nissan X-Trail BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ARKIBOUM 2nd – BLEACHING 3rd – REDBOLT 4th – MORE THAN A SONG

GLAURUNG (App. B. Swaffer) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start LIGHT DREAMER (D. Simmons) was crowded for room between FLUKES (D. Missen) and EXAGGERATION (A. Spinks).

For a considerable distance in the early part of the home straight BLEACHING (App. J. Kuskopf) was held up on the heels of REDBOLT (T. Bannon) and had to be shifted to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running.

In the early part of the home straight GLAURUNG (App. B. Swaffer) was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Following the race App. Swaffer reported that he lost the use of his nearside rein over the concluding stages.

CASTLE HILL (G. Watson) was held up for clear running for the entirety of the home straight.

Race 5: – Wilson Ryan Grose Lawyers BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – BURT 2nd – ALDREN 3rd – SKITTER 4th – CONTROL AGENT

On returning to scale Jockey J. P. Stanley) reported that BERKELEY failed to travel at any stage of the event, felt awkward in its action, and for this reason he did not place his mount under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any abnormalities.

EIREANN (App. B. Swaffer) knuckled on jumping.

LIBERTY’S MAGIC (A. Spinks) and FAST ENTRY (S. Pawsey) were slow to begin.

EIREANN was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

Over the concluding stages MAGGIE’S PAL (App. J. Kuskopf) raced in restricted room and could not be fully tested.

Leaving the 900 metres CONTROL AGENT (D. Hayse), which was racing keenly, shifted out and hampered ALDREN (P. Cullen).

Race 6: – XXXX Gold Cleveland Bay Open Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – LIVING ON A PRAYER 2nd – LE CAP 3rd - MOTORISED 4th – PLAYTIME 5th - OUTSTANDINGLY

Rounding the first turn, near the 1000 metres, TERMS OF TRADE (L. Dillon) had to be steadied when crowded for room between BARACHELLO (C. Whiteley) which, when racing keenly, shifted out, and TEN SECONDS (D. Simmons), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.

In the early stages PLAYTIME (A. Coome) pulled hard.

Leaving the 200 metres ASSERTIVE ALBERT (J. Felix), which was weakening, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LIVING ON A PRAYER (K. Wharton), which shifted in when not completely clear.

Passing the 100 metres both BLAME GAME (A. Spinks) and ORIENTELLE (S. Wilson) had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between FAST ‘N’ FEROCIOUS (S. Pawsey) and ASSERTIVE ALBERT.

In the home straight CARMINE KING (D. Evans) raced in restricted room, and over the concluding stages could not be fully tested when awkwardly placed on the heels of LE CAP (D. Missen).

When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of LIVING ON A PRAYER, trainer T. Butts explained that following its most recent start, at Rockhampton on 19th June 2014, the gelding underwent an endoscopic examination and no abnormalities were apparent. Mr Butts said that LIVING ON A PRAYER had worked well since that performance and a forward showing was expected.

Race 7: RSL Townsville Cup Open Handicap – 2100 metres
1st – PAYTEEVEE 2nd – OFORAWESOME 3rd - WEATHERVANE 4th – BEEBEESDUEL 5th - JUNEE BOY

RELEASED struck the gate leading into the enclosure. The gelding was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and was cleared to start.

STRATO MOSTRO (C. Whiteley) was slow to begin.

CASH ATTACK (P. Cullen) began awkwardly and shifted out.

In the early stages MISTY ROCKET (T. O’Hara) raced keenly.

Rounding the turn out of the straight on the first occasion LADRETTO (G. Kliese) shifted out and became awkwardly placed on the heels of HASTEIN (J. P. Stanley). At the same stage BEEBEESDUEL (D. Simmons) had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of RELEASED (S. Pawsey).

Rounding the turn near the 400 metres BEEBEESDUEL became awkwardly placed on the heels of the weakening BARAMUL BULLET (A. Spinks) and had to be checked. A post-race veterinary examination of BARAMUL BULLET revealed that the gelding had been galloped on.

In the home straight WEATHERVANE (T. Bannon) was inclined to lay in under pressure.

CANONIZED (G. Watson) raced wide throughout.

Race 8: SKY Racing Class 6 Plate – 1000 metres
1st – STARLISTIC 2nd – JAXTER’S BALLET 3rd - SNITZEM 4th – ARCATRAN

SNITZEM (D. Evans), which was slow to begin, was tightened for room shortly afterwards between ARCATRAN (J. Felix) and PASSIN’ THRU (D. Missen), both of which shifted ground.

BEAUTIFUL TIMING (T. O’Hara) was slow to begin.

SURAH SURAH (App. J. Kuskopf) bounded in the air at the start.

In the early part of the home straight SNITZEM was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Passing the 200 metres SURAH SURAH was disappointed for a run between PASSIN’ THRU and SAVAGE YOUNG BLOND (G. Watson), which shifted in.

SAVAGE YOUNG BLOND raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of STORM IN A RAINBOW, Jockey T. Thompson explained that the mare failed to travel at any stage and dipped on a number of occasions. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare did not reveal any abnormalities.
