Queensland Principal Club - Downs & South West Region

TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB
11TH December 1999

STEWARD IN CHARGE : J Childs
STEWARDS : W Booshand, L Carvosso, P Reardon, R Doyle,
C Reibelt

Weather: Raining Track: Good Down graded too dead at 3.25 PM. Rail: 6 Metres

Jockey M Aspinall who was indisposed was replaced by D Green (Gold Sea), T Dalton (Akthar), K. Waller (Arctic Runner and In Accord) and M. Lister (Veleta Belle).

RACE: 1. HAVANA LAD (A. Gillett) which was fractious, jumped out coming into contact with JUST VAGUE (T. Dalton). HAVANA LAD continued to lie out for some distance. BEAU SAW (K. Waller) was slowly away. Leaving the 1200 metres JUST VAGUE shifted out making minor contact with JUST SMOKIN’ (B. Appo) which made contact with BEYONDA (C. Symons). Leaving the 1100 metres BEYONDA was inclined to race ungenerously whilst being eased. Approaching the 750 metres BEYONDA was eased from the heels of HAVANA LAD. Approaching the home turn TIP TOP SHOWGIRL (A. Parramore) which was taken out marginally by BEYONDA was eased from the heels of JUST VAGUE. When questioned about the disappointing performance of JUST VAGUE trainer M. Goodwin and jockey T. Dalton were both of the opinion that the gelding failed to handle the track conditions once placed under pressure. A subsequent Veterinary inspection of the gelding failed to reveal any apparent abnormality. Jockey A Gillett was dislodged from HAVANA LAD at the pull up. HAVANA LAD returned to scale with a superficial laceration above the near eye. Time off 4.14 p.m.

RACE: 2. Both ALL NATIVE (A. Gillett) and PELLERE FIDES (A. Parramore) were reluctant to load. JAKE ROBERT (R. Goltz), SPICY TOUCH (L. Roberts), MACKELLAR (D. Green) and CHANTAL PARK (K. Waller) were all slowly away. Approaching the 800 metres PRINCESS TAAN (C. Symons) was eased from the heels of VALERIAN TRIOMPHE (G. Geran). VALERIAN TRIOMPHE which was racing greenly and inclined to lie out was eased from the heels of EMBEZZLED (G. Lynch) on a number of occasions from the 800 metres to approaching the home turn. Near the 350 metres JAKE ROBERT and VALERIAN TRIOMPHE were crowded for room when ALL NATIVE shifted in marginally. VIVID STORM (S. Killen) was crowded for room over the concluding stages by VALERIAN TRIOMPHE, which hung in once placed under pressure. Over the concluding stages PEDRO’S PRINCE (K. Banks) was taken in by JAKE ROBERT which shifted in under pressure. When questioned regarding the reason SPICY TOUCH got so far out of its ground in the early and middle stages jockey L Roberts stated that the filly raced extremely green and did not start to stretch out until leaving the 600metres. L. Roberts also stated the filly raced very green at her first appearance at the Gold Coast. Explanation noted. Time off 4.51 p.m.

RACE: 3. At the start BLAZING ALEX (G. Geran) was severely hampered between FLYING ORBIT (A. Gillett) which jumped outward and BELLETIC (K. Blinco) which was taken in marginally by ARCTIC RUNNER (K Waller). Approaching the 550 metres BLAZING ALEX was eased from the heels of MISS KELLY (T Dalton). Approaching the home turn MISS KELLY shifted out forcing SERENE ELEGANCE (A. Parramore) wider. ROTELLA (N. Tomizawa) was inclined to lay in approaching the 100 metres. METEORIC RISE (L. Francis) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. There was a delay to correct weight whilst Stewards viewed the patrol film to see if Beam Counter had obtained a fair start. The film subsequently confirmed that Beam Counter had been given full opportunity to obtain a fair start and correct weight was declared. D Green was almost dislodged from BEAM COUNTER when his mount almost fell when its hind legs slipped on jumping, resulting in the horse not being competitive throughout the race. A subsequent Veterinary inspection of BEAM COUNTER revealed the gelding sustained a minor abrasion to the point of the near hip. Time off 5.20 p.m.

RACE: 4. Following the running of Race 3, Stewards downgraded the track from dead to slow at 5.30 p.m. Both CHOCKERS (A. Gillett) and OUR GOLD MAN (G. Lynch) were slowly away. UNCLE HARVE (M. Dorrington) which jumped in shifted in abruptly shortly after, across the running of CHOCKERS coming into contact with OUR GOLD MAN. UNCLE HARVE which got its head in the air and raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages shifted out at the 800 metres forcing VACEN LEE (T. Dalton) wider. Shortly after UNCLE HARVE had to be eased from the heels of VACEN LEE. Leaving the 400 metres OUR GOLD MAN shifted out forcing CHOCKERS wider on the track. SOLAR RANCH (N. Tomizawa) had difficulty obtaining a clear run in the early stages of the home straight. When questioned about the erratic running of UNCLE HARVE jockey M Dorrington stated that he believes he made an error by allowing MIDNIGHT MENACE (D Green) to cross him in the early stages. Stewards advised M Dorrington that they were of the same opinion and are of the opinion that the horse would have raced much kinder if he had let him stride. Time off 5.55 p.m.

RACE: 5. CALLING was withdrawn by Stewards at 3.33 p.m. following a request by trainer D. Burns to do so as the track had been downgraded to dead. Stewards advised D. Burns that a wet track bar would be imposed on the mare. MCGILL (M. Dorrington), GOLDEN BLADE (K. Waller) and QUICK WHISKEY (N. Tomizawa) were all slowly away. Nearing the 1300 metres turn MORINGA’S GULLIVER (D. Green) shifted out forcing BOLD MUSIC (R. Goltz) wide. Approaching the 1200 metres MORINGA’S GULLIVER (D Green) was eased from the heels of QUICK WHISKEY, which was inclined to hang throughout. Leaving the 100 metres MCGILL shifted in under pressure coming into contact with the running rail. When questioned regarding the reason MCGILL got so far out of his ground in the early and middle stages jockey M. Dorrington stated that if the gelding is ridden in a forward position in his races he fails to run on, explanation noted. Time off 6.35 p.m.

RACE: 6. DARIUS was withdrawn by Stewards at 4.30 p.m. following a request by trainer M. Goodwin to do so as the track had been downgraded to dead. Stewards advised M. Goodwin that a wet track bar would be imposed on the gelding. IDRIS was withdrawn by Stewards at 6.04 p.m. following a request by trainer D. Newham to do so as the track had been downgraded to slow. Stewards advised D. Newham that a slow to heavy track bar would be imposed on the colt. SPLENDORIZON (G. Geran) which was slowly away, raced keenly in the early stages. LONG DIN SILVER (M. Dorrington) jumped awkwardly and in coming into contact with SPLENDORIZON. MISTRESS MILL (N. Tomizawa) jumped in. Approaching the 1200 metres MISTRESS MILL (N. Tomizawa) was eased when crowded for room by LONG DIN SILVER which was taken in marginally by HOW’S THAT (S. Killen). MRS. MOPPS (M. Lister) which raced keenly in the early stages shifted in near the 500 metres coming into contact with LINDA LUSH LIPS (G. Lynch). ZEAL (L. Roberts) raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Leaving the 900 metres LINDA LUSH LIPS, which was racing keenly, shifted out coming into contact with MRS. MOPPS. Leaving the 100 metres LONG DIN SILVER was steadied when ZEAL shifted in. BAY OF TIME (R. Goltz) hung in over the concluding stages. Both hind bandages on LINDA LUSH LIPS came loose during the race. A subsequent inspection of the bandages revealed that the Elastoplast had been sewn and the only reason that could be offered was the wet conditions. When questioned about the disappointing performance of MISTRESS MILL apprentice N Tomizawa stated that he was of the opinion that after his mount was eased approaching the 1200 metres the filly was reluctant to race into the rain. Explanation noted. A subsequent Veterinary inspection of the filly failed to reveal any apparent abnormality. Time off 7.15 p.m.

RACE: 7. BABY SPICE (P. Gesler) jumped awkwardly and in. ST. VIDGEON (J. Warrington) was slowly away. Leaving the 1200 metres VELETA BELLE (M. Lister) raced keenly for some distance. Near the 850 metres ST. VIDGEON was steadied from the heels of SEA OPAL (A. Gillett) which was taken out by TOLLGATE (G Lynch). Near the 700 metres VELETA BELLE shifted out making contact with SLIGO PRINCESS (D. Green). In the early stages of the home straight SEA OPAL shifted in and across the running of TOLLGATE. BRIDLING made the home turn wide. On returning to scale jockey R. Goltz the rider of the second placegetter THUNDERBIRD DANCE lodged an objection against SEA OPAL (A. Gillett) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from both riders, trainers, connections and viewing of the patrol film, it was established that SEA OPAL shifted in approaching the 100 metres and 50 metres coming into heavy contact with THUNDERBIRD DANCE and approaching the finish shifted in and brushed THUNDERBIRD DANCE. Taking into account the heavy contact between both horses Stewards were of the opinion that it was sufficient to uphold the objection. Stewards amended the placings to THUNDERBIRD DANCE (1st), SEA OPAL (2nd) and SLIGO PRINCESS (3rd). Jockey A. Gillett was subsequently reprimanded for not making sufficient effort to prevent his mount shifting in. When questioned about the disappointing performance of BABY SPICE jockey P Gesler stated that they decided to ride the filly in a forward position from barrier 1 and because of the wet track. P Gesler was of the opinion that riding the filly forward did not suit her and she also added that the filly did not handle the wet conditions. Time off 7.55 p.m.

All winners were swabbed.
