Prior to the running of this race, connections of RUNNING ROYAL advised stewards that they would be instructing their rider not to use the whip on the mare as, in their opinion, the mare resented being ridden with the whip at its last start.

Apprentice B. Evans, rider of RUNNING ROYAL, explained that the horse began well from its good gate and raced in a forward position as expected. He said the tempo of the race, in his opinion, was solid throughout and for this reason he was obliged to place the horse under pressure from the 600m. He said when he did this, RUNNING ROYAL did not quicken as he would have liked, and in the straight when placed under full pressure, the horse did not respond and gave ground over the final 100m.
After the running of the race, it was noted that RUNNING ROYAL had a slight bloody discharge from its offside nostril. It was reported by the starter and veterinary surgeon that RUNNING ROYAL was fractious in the barriers and lunged at the gates just prior to the start. Stewards were satisfied that the appearance of blood may have been as a result of this incident prior to the start and therefore took no further action.

He added that after this, TIZ COREY travelled well, and when placed under pressure on straightening, the gelding ran on fairly. Trainer Mr P. Nolan stated at itst 2 previous starts TIZ COREY had been drawn very wide and raced deep on the track, and that prior to this, it had been ridden in a similar manner over the same distance. W. Clasohm, rider of HEY HUNTER, and S. Bogenhuber, rider of FLASH WARRIOR, were both reminded of their obligations regarding use of the whip on horses out of contention.
When questioned, jockey P. Wolfgram (PRIVATE OFFER) explained that he had been advised that the filly in the past has been inclined to miss the start. He added that prior to the jump the horse, which has a barrier blanket as part of its gear, was inclined to sit back in the stalls, however when the gates were released it began very well. P. Wolfgram added that he was advised that although PRIVATE OFFER may be slow to begin, if it did begin well to ride it where it was comfortable. He added that after beginning well he was trapped extremely wide into the first turn and he felt he had no other option to obtain cover so he therefore decided to allow the filly to stride forward and eventually cross to the lead. Trainer D. Peoples expressed some dissatisfaction with the ride, however stewards were of the view having considered P. Wolfgram's explanation, and viewing the film, that no further action be taken. Mr People's further advised that in future it would be his intention to have the horse ridden in a rearward positon.
