Race 1: CHOICE HOME LOANS MAIDEN PLATE – 1850M
1st – Thormanby 2nd – Maianbar 3rd – Cuban 4th – Unfashionable
Track temperature: 33 degrees Celsius
BALLINAGH (G. Geran), which was extremely fractious in the barriers prior to the start, was then slow to begin.
ASIDE (T. Treichel) raced keenly in the middle stages and then near the 700m accidentally clipped the heels of SIENNA ROYAL (P. Wolfgram), which was giving ground, and blundered.
When placed under pressure in the home straight MAIANBAR (K. Yoshida) hung in and proved difficult to ride out.
Race 2: A & G SHEDS CLASS 3 PLATE – 850M
1st – Lone Assassin 2nd – Rapt In Rhythm 3rd – Queenofbeaudesert 4th – Mayamac
Track temperature: 36 degrees Celsius
BELLA MONTANA (N. Yamada) hung in badly throughout and then for some distance after the 600m continued to make contact with the running rail, and then in the home straight proved difficult to ride out.
QUEENOFBEAUDESERT (M. O'Brien) hung in under pressure in the home straight.
Race 3: PSP VIDEO CLASS 5 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Hussminda 2nd – Convictor 3rd – Paper Weight 4th – Sinful Warrior/Delago Pilli
Track temperature: 29 degrees Celsius.
DELAGO PILLI (R. Goltz) was slow to begin.
Race 4: TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1000M
1st – Athenaeum 2nd – Rock It Now 3rd – Lissoy Lad 4th – Concealed Weapon
Track temperature: 29 degrees Celsius.
Whilst on the way to the barriers B. Wallace was dislodged from CONCEALED WEAPON which cantered a short distance before being recaptured. Both horse and jockey were examined and declared suitable to take their place in the field.
ACTIVE STAR (S. Egan) reared as the gates opened and then bounded and lost considerable ground. JETALONG (J. Letherby) began very awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and then was slow to muster speed. Consequently both these horses tailed off in the early stages.
Race 5: SKY RACING MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Bellespy 2nd – Monde Bijou 3rd – Dubai Destiny 4th – Peak Performance
Track temperature: 27 degrees Celsius.
Consideration was given to a protest lodged by R. Goltz, the rider of DUBAI DESTINY, placed 4th by the Judge, against PEAK PERFORMANCE (J. Letherby), which was placed 2nd, alleging interference from the 900m to the 600m. On the evidence it was established that near the 900m PEAK PERFORMANCE took charge of its rider, got its head up and shifted out abruptly towards the middle of the track resulting in both DUBAI DESTINY and MY CALENDAR GIRL (S. Bogenhuber) being carried off the track. As a result of this jockey R. Goltz had to ride forward to prevent his mount from being carried wider. Having considered the amount of extra ground that DUBAI DESTINY was obliged to cover and the fact that its rider had to ride forward from the 800m, stewards were of the view that the interference suffered to DUBAI DESTINY exceeded the neck by long neck margin between the two horses at the finish and therefore upheld the protest and declared correct weight on the amended placings of 1, 6, 4 and 9. In this incident MY CALENDAR GIRL was also severely inconvenienced and carried wider. Subsequently trainer N. Saunders (PEAK PERFORMANCE) was advised that the horse would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to start again.
Apprentice N. Yamada, the rider of EL VIVO, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 900m when not properly clear of HI HI (M. O'Brien), which was restrained. Apprentice M. O'Brien (HI HI), explained that after this incident, when restraining the saddle on her horse commenced to shift forward. She said it continued to do so to a point where near the 700m she had to remove her feet from the stirrups in order to maintain her balance rather than endeavouring to ride in the saddle as it had slipped so far forward. She added that after this she was still able to ride the horse along without the use of her stirrups.
Race 6: CRACKER PRINT AND PAPER CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Dont Call Me Crazy 2nd – Cappin Jack 3rd – Mymatemarty 4th – Jam Tin
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius.
On jumping away JAM TIN (R. Goltz) began awkwardly and shifted out taking PROTO (K. Banks) out on to SINGLE PENNY (M. O'Brien), which was checked.
YVELINE (N. Tomizawa) and GUNMORE ROAD (T. Treichel) were slow to begin.
For some distance after the 700m JAM TIN hung in badly and near the 500m shifted in and made heavy contact with DONT CALL ME CRAZY (P. Wolfgram).
Stewards questioned trainer P. Sexton in relation to the improved performance of DONT CALL ME CRAZY. Mr Sexton stated that recently when the horse has raced over shorter distances it had a tendency to overrace and as a result was not finishing its races off as expected. He added that he had recently been experimenting with different gear on the horse and the horse had also dramatically improved in its work leading up to today's race. He stated that he was not entirely disappointed with its last start performance and was not surprised by the improved performance today. The explanation was noted.
Race 7: PALM LAKE RESORT CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Joppick 2nd – Lady Innocent 3rd – Forever Gently 4th – Towser
Track temperature: 22 degrees Celsius.
As A. Best had been stood down by the doctor following his ride in Race 6, stewards permitted apprentice N. Yamada to replace him as the rider of SMARTY SMART when no other rider was available to ride the horse at the weight.
JOPPICK (T. Treichel) jumped in at the start and bumped TUNES OF GOLD (R. Goltz).
After the 1500m SMARTY SMART (N. Yamada) had to be eased when crowded between CHECK THE LEADER (S. Egan) and JOPPICK, which got its head on the side and hung in away from TOWSER (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in when not properly clear. N. Tomizawa was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
Near the 1400m CHECK THE LEADER was restrained when crowded momentarily inside of TOWSER.
Near the 900m ALINGA STAR (L. Cumberland), which was racing keenly, was steadied to avoid the heels of OCEAN OUTLAW (K. Yoshida), which shifted in slightly.
