LIGHTNING FLASH was declared a late scratching at 3.35 pm acting on a confirmed telephone call from trainer C. Hayes that prior to loading the horse he was concerned with its condition and, in his opinion, was not in a fit state to travel. Mr Hayes was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for LIGHTNING FLASH prior to its next race start.
CAPPIN JACK (L. Cumberland) began awkwardly and threw its head up.
POLYRHYTHM (K. Forrester) and MYMATEMARTY (N. Yamada) were crowded for room at the start between WHISPRIAN (P. Wolfgram), which shifted out, and RUN BLONDIE RUN (M. Hellyer), which shifted in.
M. Hellyer, rider of RUN BLONDIE RUN, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(a), in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when not properly clear of WHISPRIAN, resulting in that horse being crowded for room and having to be checked. M. Hellyer was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 5 July, the expiration of a suspension incurred at Doomben on 22 June, and to expire at midnight, 16 July.
In the middle stages, HONOURDO (J. Letherby) raced keenly.

For some distance after the 400m, BLOW A KISS (N. Yamada) was held up when awkwardly placed between the heels of BLOW A KISS and DANEREADY (N. Tomizawa).
When questioned, S. Bogenhuber explained that RAIN BAY began very awkwardly and lost ground, and throughout the event was inclined to get its head up and shifted out away from the rail and never travelled on the bit at any stage. She added that in the straight when placed under pressure, RAIN BAY failed to respond and felt very awkward in its action, and for this reason she eased the horse down and it pulled up shortly after passing the winning post. She added that RAIN BAY has performed well on the cushion track in the past and the manner of its race tonight was somewhat out of character for the mare. Trainer Mr S. Campbell was unable to put forward any explanation for the mare's somewhat poor performance, adding that RAIN BAY had always performed competitively on the cushion surface. Mr Campbell advised stewards it would now be his recommendation to connections that the mare be sent for a lengthy spell. Stewards advised Mr Campbell that should plans change in relation to the mare's preparation that a veterinary clearance would be required for RAIN BAY. A post race veterinary examination of RAIN BAY revealed the horse to be suffering from the onset of a respiratory condition.
