From Toowoomba, 5 July 2011 – Race 7

Jockey J. Hoopert, rider of Edwardscissorhands, was fined $150 for using his whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account that jockey Hoopert had only recently been fined for a similar breach of this rule.

Race 1: Cawkwell Classic Class 4 H'cap – 1100m
1st – G'day Old Mate 2nd – Night Escort 3rd – Lady Leo 4th – Fizzy

Track temperature: 17 degrees Celsius

After being placed in the barriers, BUBBLED (K. Yoshida) got its off hind leg up on the partition. The mare was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

BUBBLED began awkwardly and got its head up.

FIZZY (A. Best) shifted out at the start and lost some ground.

For some distance after the 500m, LADY LEO (J. Letherby) was disappointed for clear running between NIGHT ESCORT (N. Yamada) and G'DAY OLD MATE (P. Wolfgram), and shortly after straightening had to be steadied and shift in to find clear running.


Race 2: Norm Wilson Memorial Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
1st –Edwardscissorhands 2nd – Power Report 3rd – Istaar 4th – Yveline

Track temperature: 15 degrees Celsius

DUBAI METRO was declared a late scratching at 7.54 am. Trainer B. Robinson was fined $200.

EASE ON BY was declared a late scratching at 8.10 a.m on veterinary advice.

FRIENDLY MUSIC (C. Priest) began awkwardly, got its head up, then was slow to muster speed and tailed off in the early stages.

Near the 500m, BE KIND (K. Forrester) had to be eased and shifted out to avoid the heels of WATACON (R. Goltz), which was weakening quickly.

Rounding the turn and shortly after straightening, EDWARDSCISSORHANDS (J. Hoopert) raced in restricted room between RED RAPTOR (A. Best) and PIONEER WAY (P. Wolfgram), which was taken out by POWER REPORT (K. Banks).

Jockey A. Best, rider of RED RAPTOR, was reprimanded for using his whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

Race 3: K & R Plumbing Supplies Maiden H'cap – 1200m
1st – Peace Talks 2nd – Just Ready 3rd – El Vivo 4th – Cobalt Blue

Track temperature: 15 degrees Celsius.

SILVER FAE (K. Forrester) was slow to begin.

JUST READY (M. Wood) began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping TELLINTAIMZ (K. Banks).

LET ME ROCK (N. Evans) began awkwardly.

Near the 1000m, COBALT BLUE (R. Goltz) got its head up when being restrained and shifted out, causing interference to EPIC DANCER (L. Cheshire), which was steadied.

Making the turn near the 900m, COBALT BLUE again got its head up and shifted out.

After the 900m, PEAK PERFORMANCE (K. Yoshida), when racing keenly, had to be steadied off the heels of PROUD AS PUNCH (N. Yamada).
Race 4: Christmas In July Bookings Available Class 1 Plate – 1500m
1st –Dodging Eddie 2nd – Starburst 3rd – Be Kind 4th - Primera

Track temperature: 14 degrees Celsius.

Apprentice M. Wood was examined by the ambulance officers and stood down from his engagement on LUCKY LANDING and was replaced by apprentice J. Brown.

STARBURST (N. Tomizawa), LUCKY LANDING (J. Brown) and SHEZA FLASHLADY (W. Clasohm) were slow to begin.

Near the 900m, LUCKY LANDING became unbalanced when steadied off the heels of STARBURST (N. Tomizawa).

K. Forrester, rider of BE KIND was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, and was reminded of his obligations regarding striking horses forward of the shoulder.

When questioned, A. Best, rider of MISS HAVIANA, explained that the mare raced in a rearward position as anticipated, however, in his opinion, it appeared to be somewhat lethargic during the race and for this reason he placed it under pressure from the 600m, however MISS HAVIANA failed to respond and in the straight and he was somewhat concerned with the horse's action. Trainer M. Webb was unable to put forward any explanation for the poor performance of MISS HAVIANA. He added that he had no intentions regarding the mare's immediate preparation, and undertook to advise stewards if any abnormality comes to light which may have had a bearing on the performance of MISS HAVIANA.


Race 5: Neil Mansell Transport 2yo Maiden Plate – 1300m
1st – Jack 'n' Me 2nd – Hargrave 3rd – Sassy 4th – Palace Sequal

Track temperature: 13degrees Celsius.

JACK 'n' ME (K. Forrester) and PALACE SEQUAL (P. Wolfgram) were slow to begin.

Near the 1000m, JACK 'n' Me (K. Forrester), which was racing keenly, shifted out and bumped heavily with PRECIOUS SHADOW (R. Goltz). After this, PRECIOUS SHADOW, which was then racing without cover, also began to race very keenly and shifted in and bumped JACK 'n' ME.


Race 6: Happy Second Birthday Cushion Track QTIS 3yo H'cap – 850m
1st – Gran Torino 2nd – Norocos 3rd – Dont Call Me Crazy 4th – Banderin

Track temperature: 12 degrees Celsius.

CONSULATE was declared a late scratching at 6.30 pm on veterinary advice.

PASADA (K. Forrester) was slow to begin and then failed to show any early speed.

Near the 700m, SPEEDING DRAGON shifted out an bumped the hind quarters of SHE'LL BE DANCING (S. Bogenhuber).

Making the first turn, FRAHA (R. Goltz) hung out and shifted ground abruptly, inconveniencing BANDERIN (J. Letherby).

When questioned, K. Yoshida explained that SPEEDING DRAGON was coming back in distance and was significantly up in class in tonight's event. He said that in the early stages the gelding was unable to match the early speed and was never on the bit throughout. Jockey Yoshida added that in the straight he placed the horse under pressure however it was inclined to shift in, and he was also concerned SPEEDING DRAGON was unbalanced and did not feel right in its action. A post race veterinary examination of SPEEDING DRAGON failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.


Race 7: Toowoomba & The Downs Racing Awards Aug 21 Class 3 Plate – 850m
1st – Trail Boss 2nd – Emma Kate 3rd – Lissoy's Lass 4th – Redbolt

Track temperature: 1degrees Celsius.

Trainer R. Coveney reported that LISSOY'S LASS sustained an injury above its off side eye lid in its stable on Friday afternoon. After arriving on course, LISSOY'S LASS was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and deemed suitable to race.

No racing incidents.
