SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT 28 JULY 2012
Stewards tonight interviewed apprentice A. Fancourt in the presence of her master Mr N. Hilton in regards to her failing to fulfil a race riding engagement for TESTIMONIANZA in Race 4 at the Charleville meeting on Saturday, 28 July 2012. Apprentice Fancourt advised that on the Sunday prior she had confirmed a riding engagement for the horse with Charleville trainer Grahame Currie, however she then advised Mr Currie early in the week that due to a commitment for her master at the Toowoomba meeting on the same day she would be unavailable to fulfil the engagement on TESTIMONIANZA. Upon this advice, Mr Currie contacted RQL Stewards to complain that he had nominated the horse for the Charleville meeting on the understanding that he had apprentice Fancourt engaged, and subsequently, having received this advice, Mr Currie was then unable to obtain the services of another rider, leading to the horse having to be withdrawn at the Charleville meeting on the day of the race. Apprentice Fancourt today pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 85B of failing to fulfil a race riding engagement. In the circumstances she was fined the sum of $200.
GENERAL
As P. Wolfgram was injured, riding replacments were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
After arriving on course, jockey S. Apthorpe expressed some discomfort in the chest and sought medical attention. As no Club doctor was present on course, the ambulance officers were required to attend to jockey S. Apthorpe, resulting in runners for Race 1 being mounted late, which led to the start of the race commencing a few minutes late. After receiving medical attention and after Stewards consulted with the ambulance officers, jockey Apthorpe was stood him down from fulfilling his engagements and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: NEIL MANSEL TRANSPORT CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Sezwho 2nd – Offyarocka 3rd – On Ice Now 4th – Scarlett Sun
Track temperature: 17 degrees Celsius
Stewards accepted trainer G. Blades' explanation that due to a misunderstanding J. Kehoe was a late declaration as the rider of SCARLETT SUN.
On jumping PRETTY TIARA (N. Nishio) was crowded when BAG OF RIDDLES (J. Letherby) shifted in.
Approaching the 900m HOT CHOCOLAT (N. Tomizawa) shifted in slightly when not quite clear of MAKER'S MARQUE (J. Hoopert). For some distance after this MAKER'S MARQUE then commenced to race very keenly and improved inside the heels of HOT CHOCOLAT and near the 800m had to be checked.
J. Letherby (BAG OF RIDDLES) said from the awkward draw tonight he was only able to obtain a position at least three wide without cover. He said when racing in this position throughout the horse never travelled and when he placed it under pressure from the 600m it commenced to weaken, gave ground and hung in badly in the straight. J. Letherby added that he was concerned that the horse felt slightly unusual in its action in front. A veterinary examination of BAG OF RIDDLES after the event failed to reveal any abnormalities. As trainer G. Jeffrey had left the course, Stewards will endeavour to contact him to inquire into the horse's post-race condition.
Race 2: GABBINBAR BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Hussminda 2nd – Tough Taimz 3rd – Hyde Park 4th – Grain Trader
Track temperature: 16 degrees Celsius
DARTH (V. Venkaya) shifted out at the start and bumped HYDE PARK (G. Goold).
In the early stages DARTH raced keenly and got its head up on a number of occasions.
Due mainly to the pace, GRAIN TRADER (S. Bogenhuber) and JET STYLE (R. Goltz) both had to be restrained for some distance in the middle stages when racing close to heels.
When racing keenly near the 800m GRAIN TRADER shifted out and made heavy contact with SPINADA (N. Tomizawa).
J. Kehoe (SECOND GO) was reminded of his obligations when using the whip on a horse out of contention.
Race 3: STEPHEN HENRY OPTOMETRY CLASS 3 PLATE – 1625M
1st – Casse Sqarette 2nd – Tellintaimz 3rd – Blackgold 4th – Heathen Chemistry
Track temperature: 16 degrees Celsius
Due to a printing error, N. Nishio was displayed in the racebook as the rider of HEATHEN CHEMISTRY. Stewards also accepted the explanation for the late declaration of D. Robinson as the rider of that runner.
CASSE SQARETTE (G. Goold) began awkwardly.
In the early stages ZEEYAJIMI (J. Letherby) was inclined to get its head up when being restrained and shortly after was ridden along to obtain a more forward position.
D. Robinson (HEATHEN CHEMISTRY) pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m and was fined $200.
Race 4: SEVEN BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 850M
1st – Emma Kate 2nd – Outback Legend 3rd – Our Rock And Rolla 4th – Sequalo Gold
Track temperature: 13 degrees Celsius
ARADO (S. Bogenhuber) was slow to begin.
Jockey C. Maund (OUTCROP) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the finish.
Race 5: TOOWOOMBA & THE DOWNS RACING AWARDS AUGUST 19 MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M
1st – Liadain 2nd – Blaktar 3rd – Rhythm Nation 4th – Encouragable
Track temperature: 12 degrees Celsius
RHYTHM NATION (R. Goltz) began awkwardly.
BARE FEET (G. Goold) and BLAKTAR (S. Bogenhuber) were slow to begin.
In the early stages ENCOURAGABLE (A. Fancourt) raced keenly and got its head up on a number of occasions, and then after being crossed near the 700m began to hang out badly and near the 600m shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing WRECKER (C. Maund).
Race 6: ROBERT OATLEY WINES QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1000M
1st – Evangelist 2nd – Red Warning 3rd – Amaizing Dragon 4th – Jet Star Baby
Track temperature: 12 degrees Celsius
AUSSIE BATTLER (S. Bogenhuber) missed the start and then failed to muster speed in the early stages and tailed off.
SPINNING TOP (G. Geran) was crowded at the start between AMAIZING DRAGON (R. Goltz), which began awkwardly and shifted out, and JET STAR BABY (K. Yoshida).
Race 7: BECOME A MEMBER MAIDEN H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Mako Shark 2nd – Forward Scout 3rd – Paulina 4th – Straightup Hustler
Track temperature: 11 degrees Celsius
G. Goold (FORWARD SCOUT) explained that his instructions from the draw were to try not to travel wide but to have the horse handy if possible as in the past it has shown a tendency to be one-paced in the straight. Jockey Goold explained that in the early stages when MAKO SHARK (N. Tomizawa) was crossed by PAULINA (R. Jamieson), he thought he would end up in a one-off position outside MAKO SHARK. However, it shifted away from the rail shortly after and as he was racing just to the outside of the heels of that horse, he was reluctant to restrain to race behind MAKO SHARK rather than maintaining his forward position, which resulted in him racing three wide into the first turn. He said he then considered in the middle stages shifting back behind MAKO SHARK to find cover, however as the pace was only moderate he elected to maintain racing where he was to keep the horse in a prominent position. He said after this FORWARD SCOUT travelled well throughout, however when placed under pressure in the straight it was reluctant to run past MAKO SHARK and in his opinion was slightly disappointing.
