Race 1: RYAN'S CONCRETING SERVICE MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M
1st – Outback Fighter 2nd – Encouragable 3rd – Rhythm Nation 4th – Blaktar

Track temperature: 18 degrees Celsius

The start of this race was delayed to avoid a clash with an interstate harness event.

BLAKTAR (N. Nishio) and ONA'S CHOICE (A. Fancourt) were both slow to begin.

On jumping, GIVE IT BERRIES (R. Ride) was crowded for room between MISS HAYDN (G. Goold) and KARANGI (M. McKenzie).

C. Small (ISHIRUBY) was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in approaching the first turn, causing ONA'S CHOICE to be crowded for room and having to be steadied.

For some distance after making the first turn KARANGI hung out.

Near the 400m MISS HAYDN, which was hanging in and was being ridden along in an endeavour to improve, shifted out and accidentally touched the heels of ISHIRUBY (C. Small), which was weakening, and blundered. MISS HAYDN then continued to hang in in the straight.

Over the concluding stages when being ridden out with the whip, BLAKTAR hung in.

Race 2: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Tough Taimz 2nd – Hussminda 3rd – Banana Kick 4th – Tallyho

Track temperature: 13 degrees Celsius

For some distance after passing the 600m HUSSMINDA (M. McKenzie) was held up when racing behind TITANIUM ROCK (G. Goold) and to the inside of BANANA KICK (S. Bogenhuber) before eventually being able to shift out to improve near the 350m.

S. Apthorpe (DAIRY) was reprimanded for using the whip in a forehand manner in consecutive strides on one occasion prior to the 100m.

Race 3: TRIMINGHAM TRANSPORT CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Offyarocka 2nd – Captain Invincible 3rd – New Ranger 4th – Bounty Miss

Track temperature: 10 degrees Celsius

As C. Eaton was indisposed for family reasons, C. Small was substituted as the rider of KASSMER.

Near the 1000m, due mainly to the pace, NEW RANGER (K. Yoshida) was steadied when taken in slightly by CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE (S. Apthorpe), which in turn was awkwardly placed inside of CANADIAN HUSSEY (S. Bogenhuber).

Near the 500m BOUNTY MISS (N. Tomizawa) was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ROCKING PEARL (A. Fancourt).

Approaching the 400m CANADIAN HUSSEY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HOT CHOCOLAT (J. Kehoe), which was hanging in.

After the 400m CANADIAN HUSSEY, when endeavouring to improve outside the heels of HOT CHOCOLAT, had to be restrained when that horse shifted out.

Race 4: IRISH CLUB HOTEL CLASS 3 PLATE – 1000M
1st – Arado 2nd – Dark Charger 3rd – Ello Ello 4th – Jack 'n' Me

Track temperature: 10 degrees Celsius

On jumping, ADMIRAH BELLE (T. Banks) was crowded by FLAMMABLE (G. Goold) which dipped and then shifted in.

After the race it was reported that OUR ROCK AND ROLLA (N. Nishio) was severely lame in the off foreleg. Trainer T. Dougall advised that the horse has previously had tendon problems in the same leg, and it was now the intention to retire the gelding. Mr Dougall was advised that should the horse resume racing in the near future, a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required.

Race 5: WILSONTON MEATS CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Tellintaimz 2nd – Chastelain 3rd – Mako Shark 4th – Leica Fuse

Track temperature: 10 degrees Celsius

Trainer T. Sears (ISTAAR) was fined $100 under LR. 30(2) for failing to have the mare on course by the prescribed time.

Near the 400m CRAIGLEA ROMEO (D. Robinson) had to be steadied when crowded for room between LADY INNOCENT (J. Kehoe), which shifted in slightly away from CHASTELAIN (N. Tomizawa), and AL NASSMA (R. Ride), which shifted out from behind TRIUMPHANT CHOICE (C. Maund) to improve. Whilst Stewards were of the view that the incident occurred as a result of a shift from both horses, apprentice R. Ride was nonetheless reprimanded and told to exercise far greater care than she did on this occasion.

Race 6: DR. BILL BEATTIE MEMORIAL QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 850M
1st – Holy Toledo 2nd – Got News For You 3rd – Show Diva 4th – Evangelist

Track temperature: 8 degrees Celsius

GOT NEWS FOR YOU (M. McKenzie) was a little slow to begin and then hung out from the 500m.

After the 350m SHOW DIVA (N. Nishio) was steadied when crowded for room between GOT NEWS FOR YOU and LAREDO (C. Maund) which shifted out slightly away from HOLY TOLEDO (G. Goold).

Race 7: NAB WILSONTON MAIDEN H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Forward Scout 2nd – Rouge Roi 3rd – Sir Scissors 4th – Paulina

Track temperature: 8 degrees Celsius

On jumping, SIR SCISSORS (A. Fancourt) was inconvenienced when CAMARA LAD (S. Bogenhuber) shifted out.

Jockey S. Bogenhuber (CAMARA LAD) said the intention was to ride the horse on the speed but to try to get it to settle if possible as it was racing over 1625m for the first time. She said after beginning well from an inside draw she endeavoured to restrain in the early stages, however CAMARA LAD took hold of the bit and when racing outside of PAULINA (R. Ride) it became very keen on the bit and despite numerous attempts over a significant distance in the early stages, CAMARA LAD refused to settle. She said because of this, near the 1000m she decided to allow CAMARA LAD to stride forward and cross to the lead in the hope that the horse would then drop the bit and relax, which it did. She said from this point she was able to steady the tempo, however from the 400m when she tried to quicken and ride the horse along, it commenced to flounder and was only one-paced in the run to the finish. Jockey Bogenhuber said in her opinion the manner in which CAMARA LAD raced in the first half of the race had a significant bearing on its disappointing performance. She added that she recommended to trainer M. Nolan that the horse may be better suited dropping back in distance, or if it was the intention to start again in races of 1600m, she recommended that the blinkers be removed. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
