Near the 1400m, the saddle on HOT CHOCOLAT slipped forward badly, placing its rider at a severe disadvantage for the remainder of the race.
ONAROHL (K. Yoshida) hung in in the straight.
G. Goold, rider of STAND'N'STARE, explained that the horse raced in a forward position with cover as expected and travelled only fairly in the first half of the race. He said from the 900m it was inclined to hang in and brushed the running rail on a number of occasions, adding that when placed under pressure from the 600m, the gelding failed to respond and weakened badly, and he was of the opinion that the horse was amiss internally. A post race veterinary examination of STAND'N'STARE failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities, however the veterinary surgeon did report the horse had displayed a slight nasal discharged. Trainer R. Macrae explained that the horse had worked satisfactorily during the week, however in the course of the week he had blood samples taken which showed a slight alteration to its normal blood pattern, however the veterinary advice was such that this was of little concern and not something for him not to accept with the horse for tonight's event. Mr Macrae confirmed that STAND'N'STARE had done enough in this preparation and it was now his intention to immediately spell the horse. Mr Macrae was advised despite this assurance, STAND'N'STARE would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official trial before being permitted to start again.
N. Evans, rider of SOSUEME, was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
