Race 1: K & R PLUMBING SUPPLIES CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Hardman Harry 2nd – Illude 3rd – Angelus Belle 4th – Captain Invincible
Track temperature: 34 degrees Celsius
HARDMAN HARRY (S. Bogenhuber), CLASSIC COUNTRY (J. Letherby) and HICKOCK HAND (M. Abe) were all slow to begin.
In the early stages ANGELUS BELLE (C. Maund) hung out and making the first turn near the 900m bumped with CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE (A.Taylor).
Apprentice J. Johnson was fined $200 under AR. 145 for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram overweight on ILLUDE.
Race 2: ACCOMMODATION PLUS CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Griffith Lad 2nd – Willhaveahundred 3rd – Spinada 4th – All In time
Track temperature: 30 degrees Celsius
Due to a misunderstanding in relation to the late declaration of J. Letherby as the rider of GOLDEN HUT, Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer R. Cole.
GRIFFITH LAD, which was caught wide early from its outside barrier, began to pull in the early stages, resulting in its rider apprentice J. Johnson letting the horse stride forward and cross to the lead.
Race 3: TOOWOOMBA PLASTICS CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1000M
1st – Ghost Train 2nd – Feisty Lady 3rd – Skytana 4th – Mini Style
Track temperature: 28 degrees Celsius
INFAMOUS (N. Nishio) stood flat-footed and lost ground at the start.
JITTER JUICE (K. Yoshida) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start LIADAIN (J. Letherby) was crowded for room between SKYTANA (M. O'Brien) and ALERTS (N. Evans), which shifted out slightly.
Race 4: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M
1st – Lord Lion Heart 2nd – Pendulums 3rd – Zabeleo 4th – Aubrey's Ace
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius
BOBSDREAM, which was engaged for this race, was a late arrival on course at 6.23 p.m. Stewards interviewed Mr A. Sommerfield, licensed stablehand representing trainer B. Currie, who tendered an explanation for his late arrival, which Stewards accepted.
Whilst parading AUBREY'S ACE (C. Maund), which was fractious, was required to be resaddled. As a result of its manners, the gelding was removed from the mounting yard to have the adjustment take place.
Apprentice J. Letherby (DEEKAYEL) reported that the horse raced only moderately throughout, however rounding the home turn he was concerned as it was making an abnormal breathing noise and as the horse was giving ground he thought it in the horse's best interests to desist from riding the horse out and eased it down in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of DEEKAYEL found the horse to be coughing and suffering from a respiratory infection. Trainer S. Hamilton was advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness for the horse and also have the horse perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next start.
A post-race veterinary examination of BOBSDREAM (D. Robinson), which tailed out, revealed no abnormalities. Mr Sommerfield was advised to inform trainer B. Currie that before BOBSDREAM would be permitted to start again it must perform competitively in an official barrier trial.
Mr Sommerfield was further advised that as trainer B. Currie had not provided Stewards with a letter signed by him authorising Mr Sommerfield to be in control of the horse at the meeting and that under the provisions of LR. 44 Mr Currie would be fined $100.
Race 5: DENTAL ELEGANCE QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 850M
1st – Missy Longstocking 2nd – Thedevilmademedoit 3rd – Pound On Tubby 4th – Rapid Crystal
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius
On jumping DULCIE'S DELIGHT (S. Bogenhuber) was checked when RAPID CRYSTAL (K. Yoshida) shifted out abruptly.
JESSETTE (A. Best) blundered at the start.
MISSY LONGSTOCKING (A. Holt) was crowded for room at the start between JUST AS SWEET (L. Morrison) and THEDEVILMADEMEDOIT (L. Tarrant), which shifted in.
Near the 400m JUST AS SWEET shifted in and brushed the rail.
For some distance in the straight JUST AS SWEET endeavoured to improve into a run inside of JESSETTE where in the Stewards' opinion there was insufficient room. As a result of this JUST AS SWEET had to be restrained for a considerable distance and therefore was never able to be tested at any stage in the straight.
Approaching the 200m RAPID CRYSTAL was crowded for room when improving into a narrow run inside of CRAIGLEA OPAL (K. Wharton) which shifted in slightly whilst hanging in. After this RAPID CRYSTAL then shifted out and bumped CRAIGLEA OPAL badly whilst at the same time POUND ON TUBBY (C. Maund) on its outside shifted in slightly away from THEDEVILMADEMEDOIT. As a result of this CRAIGLEA OPAL had to be restrained.
For a majority of the home straight THEDEVILMADEMEDOIT hung in badly and proved difficult to ride.
Race 6: THE SOLAR CENTRE BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 1000M
1st –The Jazzy Prince 2nd – Bannett 3rd – Inventory 4th – Tomcat
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius
Trainer T. Sears was fined $100 for the late declaration of C. Maund as the rider of THE JAZZY PRINCE.
INVENTORY (N. Nishio) was slow to begin.
A. Best explained that TOMCAT is a horse which normally shows early speed, however tonight BANNETT (A.Taylor) was able to cross him quickly and he then anticipated settling to race outside BANNETT. He said when INVENTORY improved past him at the 800m TOMCAT immediately dropped the bit and commenced to lay out, which it then did for the remainder of the race. He added that in the past TOMCAT has usually travelled well in its races, however in the early stages tonight he was always at the horse and it never responded and weakened in the straight. Jockey Best was unable to put forward any further explanation and was somewhat dumbfounded with the manner in which TOMCAT raced tonight. Trainer M. Webb will be contacted regarding the post-race condition of TOMCAT and its future racing program.
Apprentice N. Nishio (INVENTORY) said the horse is one which has a tendency to be slow into stride at the start. He said tonight INVENTORY stood flat-footed when the gates were released and for this reason in the early stages he rode the horse in an endeavour to carry out his instructions to be forward. He said when he did this INVENTORY gathered good speed early, however he was of the view that once he had done this INVENTORY then raced too hard in front and was keen with him in the middle stages of the event. He was of the opinion that when placed under pressure INVENTORY failed to respond due to the manner in which it raced throughout. Trainer S. Tregea confirmed the instructions given to lead if possible, however he was concerned that INVENTORY may miss the start as it did. Mr Tregea added that INVENTORY is a horse which has had surgery for a wind problem and tonight was having its first start on the cushion track and with the addition of blinkers. He said that INVENTORY is a horse which historically has been slow to begin but then able to muster good early speed, however he is of the view that it goes too keenly in its races but thought with the addition of the gear and with the small field tonight it may have been able to find the lead and finish off its race better than it did. Mr Tregea added that he would like to restrict INVENTORY to a shorter distance if able to find suitable races, however will endeavour to keep the horse restricted to races for which it is best suited if possible.
Race 7: THE GLENNIE SCHOOL CLASS 1 PLATE – 2000M
1st – Mako Shark 2nd – Sir Scissors 3rd – May 4th – Sandy's Dragon
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius
In the early stages of the race the breastplate of SIR SCISSORS (L. Morrison) broke.
Near the 400m SIR SCISSORS became unbalanced when crowded by MAKO SHARK (S. Bogenhuber), which hung in.
