Supplementary Report

11/02/2013. Trainer T Wolfgram reported that Oh Sunday which performed poorly at Toowoomba 9/02/2013 would now be retired and Bullova Lady which was galloped on is going for a spell.

Race 1: XXXX GOLD CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1300M
1st – Without Reproach 2nd – Currawee Lass 3rd – Chastelain 4th – Hi Hi

Track temperature – 28 degrees Celsius

As D. Robinson was indisposed, N. Tomizawa was substituted as the rider of HOME AND HOSED.

GOLDEN HUT (T. Serjeant) stood flat-footed and lost ground at the start.

HI HI (N. Evans) was slow to begin.

For a considerable distance after the 1000m BULLOVA LADY (T. Wolfgram), which was racing keenly, was checked off the heels of HOME AND HOSED (N. Tomizawa).

Rounding the home turn and in the straight CHASTELAIN (M. O'Brien) hung in badly.

Apprentice T. Wolfgram (BULLOVA LADY) explained that the mare began awkwardly and then was reluctant to muster speed in the early stages, which is uncharacteristic for this mare. He added that after being crossed by HOME AND HOSED in the early stages, BULLOVA LADY then raced very keenly and proved difficult to settle. He said the mare then overraced for a considerable distance until near the 600m and when the pace quickened was left flat-footed and despite his riding it failed to respond. He said he was of the view that the manner in which the mare raced throughout was a telling factor over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of BULLOVA LADY revealed that the mare had sustained significant lacerations to the off hind leg, consistent with being galloped on. The mare was also found to be stepping slightly short in the off foreleg. As trainer T. Wolfgram was undecided whether the mare would continue with its preparation, she was advised that if it did, she would be required to produce a veterinary clearance for BULLOVA LADY prior to it being permitted to race again.

Race 2: K & R PLUMBING SUPPLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M
1st – Are Tee Ess 2nd – Miss Granny Grey 3rd – True To Form 4th – Bituminous

Track temperature – 27 degrees Celsius

IDLE MINDS (S. Shield), SPURRING SPRINT (N. Tomizawa) and BITUMINOUS (S. Bogenhuber) were slow to begin.

ZAC’S WORLD (K. Yoshida) bounded in the air at the start.

Near the 100m SWEET STUFF (M. O'Brien) fell. As apprentice M. O’Brien was injured and transported to hospital, an inquiry into the reasons for the fall occurring was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed. When SWEET STUFF fell, FIERCE RULER (M. Dorrington), BITUMINIOUS, ZAC’S WORLD and IDLE MINDS were all badly inconvenienced. Due to apprentice O’Brien being transported to hospital, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 3: MAGIC MILLIONS SALE MARCH 17-18 QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1100M
1st – Yindu 2nd – Bittersweet 3rd – Convoy 4th – Gully Command

Track temperature – 25 degrees Celsius

The explanation tendered by trainer J. Crompton for the late declaration of S. Shield as the rider of CONVOY was accepted.

PUFF’S GIRL (N. Tomizawa) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped RIVERS END (S. Bogenhuber).

JUST AS SWEET (J. Kehoe) and CONVOY (S. Shield) were slow to begin.

Making the first turn near the 900m RIVERS END shifted out and made heavy contact with YINDU (T. Wolfgram).

BITTERSWEET (A. Best), which was racing wide in the early stages, then commenced to hang out badly from the 900m, particularly on the turns, and raced towards the middle of the track, and then in the straight BITTERSWEET hung in badly. As BITTERSWEET has hung previously in each of its starts, trainer M. Webb was advised that the filly will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to start again.

Near the 500m SPURSYN (K. Yoshida), which was hanging in, had to be shifted out from behind the heels of RIVERS END and then shortly after this SPURSYN was again checked when it laid in towards the heels of RIVERS END, which commenced to give ground.

Race 4: NEIL MANSELL GROUP CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1625M
1st – Black Leg Bay 2nd – Vice Or Virtue 3rd – Slick Lago 4th – One Stop

Track temperature – 22 degrees Celsius

SLICK LAGO (L. Williams) was slow to begin.

In the early stages when caught wide without cover, BLACK LEG BAY (S. Bogenhuber) was allowed to stride forward and eventually cross to the lead.

Near the 1400m VICE OR VIRTUE (T. Wolfgram) was steadied when crowded for room between FINE TUNE (N. Tomizawa) and ONE STOP (N. Evans), both of which shifted ground.

L. Williams (SLICK LAGO) was reprimanded for the manner in which he used his whip in a backhand fashion from the 400m.

Apprentice T. Wolfgram (VICE OR VIRTUE) explained that after receiving slight crowding in the early stages, the gelding then commenced to race very keenly and proved difficult for him to hold and for this reason he elected from the 1000m to shift out as he was concerned about clipping the heels of horses in front. He said once he shifted out, VICE OR VIRTUE then continued to race keenly and he had no alternative but to allow it to stride, resulting in him racing extremely wide in the middle stages. He added that after the race he advised trainer D. Baker that the gelding proved difficult to ride and he recommended that in future a senior rider be engaged for the horse.

Trainer T. Wolfgram said OH SUNDAY (T. Serjeant) had only been in her care for a very short time and had been sent to her as it had raced well on the cushion track at Caloundra. She said she advised the rider to allow the horse to stride forward in the early stages as it is very one-paced, however although her rider carried out these instructions, she was extremely disappointed with the gelding’s performance in tailing out and she would be having discussions with connections regarding the horse’s immediate future. Stewards considered the performance of OH SUNDAY to be unacceptable and advised Ms Wolfgram that the gelding will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial of at least 1000m before being permitted to start again.

Race 5: CHARLTON TYRES CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M
1st – Conjugal Rights 2nd – Show Flight 3rd – Liadain 4th – Rob The Vault

Track temperature – 20 degrees Celsius

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to ascertain the reasons why EVANGELIST (A. Best) missed the start considerably. It was established that as the gates were released EVANGELIST, which was standing properly, then reared and sat back, resulting in it losing considerable ground. In the circumstances it was deemed that the actions of EVANGELIST were due solely to the horse’s behaviour and therefore it was declared a starter. Trainer M. Webb was advised that he will be required to provide a barrier certificate for EVANGELIST before it is permitted to start again.

Near the 800m SHOW FLIGHT (N. Tomizawa) was steadied to avoid the heels of CONJUGAL RIGHTS (T. Wolfgram) which shifted out slightly.

Near the 200m ACCORDING TO REX (N. Evans) was crowded for room by ROB THE VAULT (S. Bogenhuber) which shifted in slightly before being corrected and straightened by its rider.

Race 6: VANDERFIELD MACHINERY MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M
1st – Little Orpo 2nd – Danz Art 3rd – Pantalettes 4th – Dame Della

Track temperature – 20 degrees Celsius

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Hulbert for the late scratching of MISS ALEXANDRA at 8.52 am.

DANZ ART (C. Jokic) and LITTLE ORPO (T. Wolfgram) bumped at the start.

In the early and middle stages CAPTAIN CAMERON (N. Tomizawa) and LETHAL ROSE (K. Yoshida) raced very keenly.

When questioned regarding the somewhat improved performance of LITTLE ORPO, trainer D. Gollan advised that at the horse’s previous start it drew extremely wide and in the early and middle stages was ridden slightly more forward than anticipated, however was unable to find any cover and consequently raced 5 wide for a considerable distance. He said because of that LITTLE ORPO weakened around the turn and its rider did not persist riding it out as it was tiring and out of contention. He said in tonight’s smaller field he instructed apprentice T. Wolfgram to endeavour to try to find cover and although the horse raced further back than he anticipated or instructed, he was of the view the fact that it was able to find cover in tonight’s race allowed it to settle much better and finish its race off as well as it did. He also added that he was of the view that the quality of tonight’s race, being a maiden, was of a lesser standard than that of the horse’s previous events. Whilst Stewards were satisfied there was no significant change of tactics which warranted notification, Mr Gollan was reminded of his obligations that should he feel there may be a variance in tactics, he is required to notify such.

Race 7: SOUTHERN CROSS TEN CLASS 5 H'CAP – 1100M
1st – Peterhof 2nd – Street Sister 3rd – Winning Dreams 4th – Why Warrior

Track temperature – 18 degrees Celsius

Rounding the home turn WHY WARRIOR (B. Powell) hung out.

Trainer J. Byrne advised that BANNETT (A. Taylor), which performed disappointingly, would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of BANNETT failed to reveal any abnormalities.
